He has always been a nervous dog. On our morning Sunday walks, He would shiver, when we pass another pedestrian, and whine, I used to keep him his snout strapped in a black nylon muzzle To dissuage too-friendly strangers from reaching down And swinging their pale fleshy fists in front of his nose In the universal gesture of peace between human and dog. So instead, people would look down at him, and stare At his black nylon muzzle, and glare at him straight in the eyes Until the nervous old dog would curl his tail and bark and howl “How could you take that animal out in public, it’s irresponsible.” But now, on my Sunday morning walks with my old nervous dog I keep the black nylon muzzle hidden from pedestrians in my pocket And instead, when a too-friendly stranger smiles down at the dog, I hold up one hand, and declare with a smile, “he’s a rescue.” And they nod and smile in return, and say, “I understand, “Isn’t he such a sweet little boy? God bless you for taking him in.”
