“Love at First Slime is a body of work that strives to marry the elegant and the obscene.  Once upon a time, a girl could be advised to "enter a man's heart through his stomach," a turn of phrase that conjures images of an alien femme who burrows merrily between the internal organs of her host - or perhaps bakes him a pie.

Love is patient.

Love is strange.

Love is messy.

Love comes from above.

Or below.  

Or from the side.

Love is our most noble emotion, and yet we express our love in a myriad of ways we'd rather not describe out loud.  Today we celebrate the beautiful beast that is the body, ruled and tormented by her head, her heart, her stomach, and her loins.  Today we dress the body up in our love, and the labors of our wild hands.  We hope that your mouth waters in anticipation of rare, unspeakable pleasure!

Who is Bella Eskanazi?

As a Jew from Turkey, there are several things that make Bella's personal history interesting; and these also shed light on to Turkey's history, literature and names that have left their mark on their era.

Bella witnessed the exile of her journalist brother-in-law, Erol Güney, she inspired Orhan Veli Kanık (a very important Turkish poet who broke down the traditional rules of poetry in Turkish literature), she struggled to become a teacher at the Village Institute (because of her Jewish identity) and so on. Bella sheds light to Turkey of early 1900s and its missed opportunities.

While Bella strongly has love for Turkey, her memories reveal how the young stumbled and was disappointed in the hope that all different identities could exist together.

KAYIKTAKİ ÇOCUK / THE BOY IN THE BOAT

A children’s book project developed by Sevde Tuba Okçu, Vonne Hemels and Maya Mizuno that I illustrated in 2017. We made the book to raise awareness towards the refugee crises for children. The book has a great message in the end.
