THE RUNDOWN.
‘ closing time ! ‘ are familiar words from layla’s early memory, born and bred in housten, growing up in and around the bar her parents owned. nowerdays it might be odd, and illegal, to see a toddler padding around a dingy joint — but that bar was the foundation of her early life. her mother and father made their money by selling booze to locals, truckers, and late night dates. the people were honest, good, but often had their own demons chasing them down the bottle. the very early years of her life were stable, until she hit the age of 5. layla’s mother struggled with her mental health, living with a lot of denial. it would leave her to make occasional rash decisions. this mainly stints running away from home with her daughter to drive throughout alabama, nexadam texas, & gerogia. layla and her mother would party the weekend away, and drive for hours on end. however unstable she may have been, layla’s mother would always make sure to spoil her daughter at any chance she could. perhaps it was out of her frenzy, or guilt of a young layla’s confusion, but the young girl saw a lot more of the south the country than most her age did. ‘thelma & louise’, they were once called on the road. layla truly loved her mother, and often would be the soft voice and open arms to bring her mother back down to earth in the bad times,. naturally, layla’s father would be furious upon their arrival home, but over time his scolding died down to downright apathy each time his wife would leave and come back with their daughter. as layla would get older, eventually she’d stop being taken on these trips. maybe because she was old enough to question her mothers state of mind, and have enough awareness to know her mother needed help. eventually, layla’s mother left for one final time, and never came back. layla was thirteen when it happened, and watched her now indifferent father find no concern that his wife has picked up and left — as if he expected such. layla was beyond distraught, waiting by the window for days, wondering what on earth could of happened to her mum, as the years passed, police would pick up sightings of her mum around the country. however, as an adult, she had the choice whether to come home or not. this would leave layla to wonder what in the world was so important her mother couldn’t come back for her. as adult layla came to rationalise out that her mother was struggling with her mental health for as long as she could remember, it had taken such a hold on her mind in those later years. this discovery made it a bit easier to process the reported sightings of her mum, but that’s not to say it still didn’t effect her longterm.
on the home front, layla doesn’t remember having a full conversation with her father since before the night her mother left for good — it was if both parents had left that night. layla left housten the moment she was legal, finishing school and packing a bag to leave her fathers home, becoming a bit of a drifter around texas making money and sleeping on friends’ couches. she rung up her father once, at nineteen, who only commented in his thick armenian accent she was just like her mother before hanging up. layla never rang back again.
layla made it up to california state three years ago, working odd jobs until she found more permanent work at the reef bar. the place looked familiar, sparking memories of her childhood. the good ones, when her father was happy, and her mother felt stable and present, to live in the fleeting good times and to find a new family with the people in town. family was a fleeting concept, that passed her by fasting than her mothers convertible heading down route 66. layla is known to be quick witted and always up for a banter. however rather stubborn, and sometimes a little too candid with her words. but she works hard, sometimes never taking breaks during the day. often longing for the affection she lost from the past, but layla often finds it hard to reach out for it.
