Hello everyone! Welcome to Wednesday. This week we’re talking about the phrases in a language that express things with food…yeah, food idioms! There are a lot in every language and I’m going to give you a few in German and in Turkish…and I’m speaking French just because I wanna.
A very famous saying in German is “es ist mir Wurst.” (Or “Wurscht,” if you wanna use a dialect). It means that something isn’t really important to you. You can use it for really almost everything…for example: “I have homework…es ist mir Wurst.” “I have a class…es ist mir Wurst.” “I’m pregnant…es ist mir—Oh.”
Another phrase in German that I like is “jemand spielt die beleidigte Leberwurst.“ Funny, right? It means that someone is INSULTED and „fait un fromage.” …See that? “Faire un fromage.” (German) It’s also an idiom, okay?!
The Turkish phrases are also really cool. For example, “herseye maydanoz olmak.” When someone has an opinion about everything, even when they shouldn’t. I also like “armut dibine düşer.” Word for word, it means “le fruit ne tombe pas loin d l’arbre…” We have the same phrase in English—the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Yyyyeah…I’m done. In French, German, English, and Turkish this week…okay then! I think food idioms in every language are awesome.
