He'd bargained for Rome with flesh, Unnerved a king. His countrymen heaped him with prizes Until he knelt, mule-like.

Every day he slept While his wife washed and dusted The mute ranks Of their household gods.

Every night he stroked The nape of her neck With fingers that ached too much For him to call them phantoms.
