Mahakali

Bearer of worlds, destroyer of hoards;

caring, loyal, fierce, compassionate.

Frightening, menacing, mother of death -

giver of life, champion to her allies.

Ten thousand titles can’t capture her

essence - the unconditional love

that emanates from her being

straight to the marrow of my soul.

Merit in Service

Eighteen years ago today,

I joined the military. It was

one of the most difficult trials

I’ve been through, but I made it

out the other side - mostly

in one piece. I learned to push

through the blood and the tears

(and the pneumonia).

While I became an integral

part of a team, I also found

the strength to rely on myself.

I served my country proudly

and honorably for six years.

I will always be grateful

Forgot

I lost track of time,

The World in Symmetry

The way my toes curl in the sand -

each particle clinging with electricity,

sparking the reverence in my soul.

A weight is lifted and I can breathe;

no longer the girl who lacks,

I hold creation in the palm of my hand.

A single whisper and it’s all gone.

Shh...

When all is done and said -

What’s left clangs around my head.

Have I done it all just right?

Have I tried with all my might?

Perhaps it’s best left alone -

What I am is all I’ve known.

For all

we know,

Belief

When the world dissolves into nothing

and there’s no anchor to hold us in place -

it’s faith that keeps us grounded,

gives us hope that the world will reform

and the darkness will abate.

My beliefs aren’t so simple

as a single religion can hold;

they are spread far and wide

through many systems -

but they all unite in me.

I am the keeper of my faith

Earth Day

the only place we have – home to all;

we take for granted this beautiful orb

we live on will always be here

to sustain us, continuously giving,

never expecting anything in return.

our lives are only made possible

by our planet’s sheer existence,

without her we would have nothing,

we would be nothing; Mother Earth

is the only thing standing between life

and utter obliteration of all species.

Do we not owe her everything?

Shouldn’t we show our absolute gratitude –

take better care of her natural resources?

Fifty years ago today, our great nation

celebrated its first Earth Day, one day a year

we truly honor our life-giving planet.

It may be overstated for a poem, but I am sincerely

grateful to all the people who continue to enact

the changes our world needs to endure –

for our generation and the multitudes to come.

I’m so mad I can barely think;

I’ve been cooped up inside

this pen since my eyes first opened;

all I dream about is escape,

but life keeps pushing me back in;

when will I finally be set free;

free to explore as I wish;

a wish that I don’t have the heart

to make; a heart like mine

that will falter time and again;
