Thoughts on the Dan Harmon video scandal TW pedophilia and rape mentions. No he did not attack a child, but a video has surfaced of him with a baby doll from back in 2009.
First off, if any fan is surprised they really haven’t been paying attention to the content in Rick and Morty. Though they haven’t done anything quite as distasteful as the video in question, (where he rubs his junk on a plastic baby doll in a Dexter parody) there are numerous nods at pedophila and outright attempted pedo rape within the show. (Rick saying he’s been in a kid all day once he leaves his Tiny Rick body, an alien asking to take pictures of Summer and Morty’s feet, Morty dating an adult woman briefly; and those are just examples off the top of my head there’s more.)
There have been many signs before this video came out that Dan Harmon was unhinged and frankly disgusting, another video of him in the past surfaced of him fucking a mannequin leg, and his Twitter was rampant with long winded rants that made little if any sense at all. (Though he has since deleted his Twitter to avoid the backlash) Adult Swim has seemingly brushed off the incident claiming they don’t condone such things but as it happened in 2009 and Harmon apologized for his tasteless video, he has not been fired.
I’m kind of on the fence about this, on one hand what he made was truly repulsive and I already wasn’t a fan of him after following his twitter for a bit, on the other, I would much rather he have his sick fantasies played out on fictional characters or dolls than real children. It’s clear Adult Swim is keeping him for the money they can rake in considering they just signed Justin and Dan on for another 70 episodes. Not to mention other shows aired on adult swim have also had questionable content like Rick and Morty that they claim not to condone yet allow anyway.
It raises the question what should comedy be allowed to get away with?
