thanks to @lizardperson for the tag!!
It is especially befitting and wonderful that a Wednesday tag landed today instead, because I have exciting news... Chapter One of A Healing for the Birds is close to being done (like one conversation away from being done, the way a first draft can be).
The musicians changed their tune as the pair did, swallowed into a trance upon the dancefloor.
She yearned not for this to end. Not his touch, nor his smile, nor his audacity. Ten years of memories culminated into this, a final dance before her eternal farewell.
“What’s that in your eyes?” He wrapped one of his arms around to hold her mid-air, the feathers of his sleeve brushing the small of her back.
She swallowed a laugh. “Contemplating whether to gift you the unripe mangoes.”
“How foul,” Councillor Darüven smiled, offering a hand for her to rise and spin without heed. “What a shame the context’s lost on me.”
“If the merchant ever gets spun in the direction of the blood wines, I’ll be sure to invite you as my witness.”
He laughed with his heart and Eshani’s soul, the room becoming theirs and theirs alone. The nobles and all their rumours but props for their stage, an altar to this moment.
“Speaking of witnesses,” He leaned into her outstretched arms as a finishing move, one of his wrapped around her. Eshani did not remember him having roses, let alone in his other hand.
Applause erupted from a decent number of those gathered. It drowned out the pair’s laughter, the way he winked at her.
She shoved him upright, her arms sore from his deceptive weight. “I didn’t realise you were planning a performance.”
“Next time, you can come over to practice, dear. Promise.”
