once, they had no name,
a creation of the mind,
a manifestation of a concept,
nothing more than what
humanity has made them.
once, they were given a form,
a red string wrapped around fingers,
a promise someone was out there,
tied to them forever,
through a thing they called fate.
once, they were given a name:
destiny, doom, fate, future,
many ideas that were one in the same.
once, they saw things they wish they hadn’t;
saw prophecies that would come to pass,
saw the futures of those around them,
saw an eternity of loneliness.
once, they wandered the earth,
never staying in one place for long
as they watched the world turn,
watched humanity evolve,
watched empires fall and kingdoms rise.
once, they found love in a boy
with windswept hair and wild eyes,
a fragile thing they knew would not last
yet they cherished it all the same,
but they could see a future where
everything ended the same:
with the loneliness that followed them.
once, they saw their fate,
one of chasing after love forever,
of seeing their lover live many lives,
destined to always end when they met,
for living an eternal life meant sacrifice
and even fate was bound to their own.
( once, they begged for mortality,
knowing it would never be theirs. )
