though it’s very understated in the story of dark universe and I’ll never be able to fully understand it on a personal level (given I am as white as a stereotypical sheet ghost) victoria frankenstein’s blackness is so important to me. the first original character to reach the major orlando parks in over a decade, created by a team that works in a very white industry, carrying the evolution of well loved films/books with heavy social baggage, and the central pillar of a world that merges history and modernity to create something that’s never been done before. and she’s a mixed race black woman going to extreme lengths to prove herself. to prove that she won’t just continue a long cultural and artistic legacy but will make it even better.
I definitely noticed this. Especially with the subtext in the land of "Is she REALLY a Frankenstein?" And "This town doesn't trust outsiders." The writers clearly went with that on purpose, and it also conveniently gets ahead of stereotypical fanboys who hate when female and/or nonwhite characters get added to a series.
oh the writers absolutely knew what they were doing 100% pardon for the tangent but I’ve always viewed victoria as being the living manifestation of the creative team’s pressure when building her world. and thus, paradoxically, being the bridge that holds it all together. and the horror of dark universe (or at least monsters unchained) being when that pressure is the bridge that keeps your work and your creation together, how fragile everything becomes. especially under the critical gaze of a society that, let’s be honest, are as likely to see themselves in the “other” that monsters represent as they are to still recoil at them. victoria being a mixed race black woman from a historical, white family, who is neither believed nor trusted, is such a natural extension of that, it feels too disingenuous to ignore.
and I think her existence, and the world’s reaction to it, is proof that it’s for good reason. whether or not she should, she justifies her own existence because absolutely no one else will.
