Marcia Lucas was the editor on 1983âs "Return of the Jedi" and the pre-"Star Wars" George Lucas-directed films "THX 1138" and "American Graffiti."
She was also part of the editing team for director Martin Scorseseâs 1970s films "Taxi Driver," "Alice Doesnât Live Here Anymore" and "New York, New York."
Marcia Lucas was often called the unsung hero of "Star Wars," the original film that after sequels, prequels and spinoffs has come to be known by its subtitle, "A New Hope."
She convinced husband George that he should have Obi-Wan Kenobi, played by Alec Guinness, in his light saber battle with Darth Vader and become a spirit guide to Mark Hamillâs Luke Skywalker.
And she had to make sense of the raw footage that couldâve been a mess in the wrong hands, including the climactic rebel attack on the Death Star.

"Her influence on film is indelible, but those who knew her best will remember the way she made life feel more vivid, more beautiful, more fun, and more full of love," a family statement said. "Her work was known for its emotional intelligence, rhythm, and humanity â a rare ability to find the truth of a scene and bring heart, momentum, and clarity to the screen."
on the off chance I make it into the Criterion Mobile Closet parked outside the Portland Art Museum (one article said there were 8 hr waits), does anyone have suggestions for which DVDs I should pick out to buy in the three minutes I'm allowed to be inside? They apparently have every film in the Criterion Collection in there. That's so many films. I gotta go in with a plan or I'm just gonna pull random shit off the shelf, which to be fair does also seem kinda fun. I know this is the broadest possible ask for film recs, but I'm curious if ppl have immediate go-to "YOU GOTTA GET THIS" picks. For a narrower focus: B-films, horror, romance, schlock, Kung Fu, women-focused, well-executed fun, and I don't know how to articulate this last one except "films where it's kinda funny-surprising it is in the criterion collection."
The long shortlist of what I'm considering, for my own reference, if again I make actually make it into the bus bc I will be there bright and early but I do not have a eight hour wait in me

Straight up absolutely no way weâre getting in without a multi hour wait, but it is a lovely morning and itâs genuinely cool seeing ten million people in line at 9:30 in the morning on a Saturday to buy DVDs
This is such a great question! Here are some you may not know that I think are really fantastic and historic films that may be more digestible than going straight for say, the Seventh Seal:
M - a masterpiece by a master filmmaker, this drama of a community coming together to stop a pedophile. Haunting as it is stunning in cinematography and acting.
Nanook of the North - considered to be the first ever documentary film, a true historical artifact of its time.
Black Orpheus - the story of Orpheus but told by the black community of Brazil during Carnival. For surrealism and meaty realism combined, you canât do better. If youâre a fan of great films or even just like Hadestown, watch and be transported. On and entirely different note, consider watching
Brazil - a 3 hour epic, it is hard to stream with the original ending in the US. So grab this and watch both versions.
12 Angry Men - a play will do you just fine for this but I find the performances by the actors to be stunning.
3:10 to Yuma - I prefer the original that the Croterion has but some say the remake is better. Still, this is one of the only films that has the entire thing happen in real time. An incredible feat.
Black Girl - you can find where I discuss this film on my blog earlier. Incredibly important film. Make sure you are not suicidal before watching.
Blow-up - what if you made gothic horror in 1960s London? The main character is a fashion photographer and in many ways this is a film about the medium of film.
There are many more and your existing list is a great start! Good luck and you can always just order them off the website, though I appreciate that is less fun.

âThe daily routine of most adults is so heavy and artificial that we are closed off to much of the world. We have to do this in order to get our work done. I think one purpose of art is to get us out of those routines. When we hear music or poetry or stories, the world opens up again. Weâre drawn in â or out â and the windows of our perception are cleansed, as William Blake said. The same thing can happen when weâre around young children or adults who have unlearned those habits of shutting the world out.â

(So I guess part of that last ask isâ any Monroe film recommendations where she's not necessarily the punchline?)
[part two of the two-part ask]
this is difficult because in every movie of hers I've seen, the dumb blonde routine is the punchline. with that said I have not seen more than half a dozen Marilyn movies so I am SURE there are people here who can give you great recs for movies where she really gets to grow beyond the imageâor if there aren't any, they can tell you about that too.
So i personally would suggest How to Marry a Millionaire to asker, not because the women in that are eschewing gendered roles but because it inverts the paradigmâMarilyn and the other women use menâs expectations by conforming to them, but at the same time, the dialogue shows that the men are the butt of the jokes, not the women. Obviously the movie ends in a compromise between the couples but I quite enjoy her in that one in particular.
Additionally, Marilyn herself is incredibly smart in her timing and quips throughout her filmography as a âdumbâ despite being scripted into a beauty in all her roles.
Marilyn Monroeâs legacy should be her ownânot the intentially Playboy-manufactured pathetic version of her. She was not hot because of a set of three numbers and a hairstyle. She was incredibly, infectiously comedic. That is what made MM so magic to so many and so attractiveâfunny and the center of attention.

Highly recommend everyone spends 9min watching this.

âJason deCaires Taylor was born in 1974 to an English father and Guyanese mother, spending the earlier part of his life growing up in Europe, Asia and the Caribbean. Educated in South East England, he graduated in 1998 from Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, with a B.A.Honours in Sculpture and Ceramics. He is also a fully qualified diving instructor, underwater naturalist and award winning underwater photographer, with over 14 years of diving experience in various countries.
In May 2006 he gained international recognition for creating the worldâs first underwater sculpture park in Grenada, West Indies. His underwater sculptures, designed to create artificial reefs for marine life to colonise and inhabit, embrace the transformations wrought by ecological processes. The works engage with a vision of the possibilities of a sustainable future, portraying human intervention as positive and affirmative. Drawing on the tradition of figurative imagery, the aim of Jason de Caires Taylorâs work is to address a wide-ranging audience crucial for highlighting environmental issues beyond the confines of the art world. However, fundamental to understanding his work is that it embodies the hope and optimism of a regenerative, transformative Nature.
The sculptures are sited in clear shallow waters to afford easy access by divers, snorkellers and those in glass-bottomed boats. Viewers are invited to discover the beauty of our underwater planet and to appreciate the processes of reef evolution.
Jason is currently resident in Mexico as Artistic Director of the new Cancun Underwater Museum.â (bio from artist website)

A QUEEN
Okay, I donât normally add on to posts but in this case Iâve got to.
Rachel Ann Bovier is a Pittsburgh legend who has been publishing her poems in city newspapers for decades. In more recent years, she started putting up these bill boards along major roads. For what reason? I have no clue. But I would often pass them on my way to Oakland for therapy. They never failed to cheer me up.
As a young trans writer, they gave me this precious little spark of joy. There was someone like me, a writer, a Pittsburgher, a trans person, who was confident enough to put their face on a bill board! I would always smile as we passed by and my mom took note.
Fast forward a few years and itâs my 21st birthday. My mom has been super excited about my gift and teased me about it over and over again. She said it was the best gift sheâd ever gotten me and in many ways she was right. It was a custom poem she commissioned from Miss Bouvier! It congratulated me on my birthday, my academic success, lots of little stuff. It was simple and sweet and perfect.
Iâm still not out to my parents about being trans, but that poem serves as a reminder to me that trans people are every where, they are artists, they are all ages, and their visibility is essential. So thank you to Rachel Ann Bouvier for being a great poetess and a Pittsburgh treasure!
Queer joy detected!
