Years into the future when summers are much, much warmer than it was and the people don't have to go outside in five layers, one of Grace's past students finds herself teaching in a school she once attended in (now renamed after her former 8th grade science teacher). Lovingly referred as Ms. Olivia by her students, she teaches the same subject that her favorite teacher once taught.
Unfortunately for her students, she does adore her idol to bits. So for the class project, she had everyone working on a single output: a presentation on the life and works of Doctor Captain Ryland Grace.
Easy peasy, all forty of her students think. He's probably one of the most— if not the most— important man of modern times. They won't run out of material to pull information from. None had the hindsight that it might just be their downfall.
Forty students split up: a group for Dr. Ryland Grace, the molecular biologist. A group for Mr. Ryland Grace, the science teacher. And a group for Cpt. Ryland Grace, the astronaut.
Already the students are starting to see absurd shit with this man. Dr. Grace stripped of his title in the academe for calling a fellow academic a 'staggering waste of carbon'— woah???. Wait, what else did he say? 'You don't need water for life' um okay. 'The goldilocks zone isn't a requirement either... Well at least he got that right? Yeah, he should. He kinda discovered it. Really? Yeah but it's under the Cpt. Grace part of the presentation.
The second group seemed to enjoy their version of Mr. Grace to research on. He seemed like a chill guy after his stint with his infamous dissertation. There's barely any information on the internet though. The kids reach out to the other students under Mr. Grace, with Ms. Olivia's help of course. They get the email replies. Mr. Grace loves his solar system models, it's how we were taught of the Petrova line. Aww. He also loved his demonstrations. He did one with methane bubbles and forgot to soak his hand on cold water. The lab was out of order for a few weeks after that. Aww??? There are thirty-three more emails of various incidents.
Cpt. Ryland Grace's part has to be the most extensive one, so much that half of it falls under the Dr. Grace group of the presentation. He came back to being a Doctor! He... worked with the person he called a waste of carbon all those years ago. He named the star-eating bacteria. He bred the star-eating bacteria? They made it rocket fuel???
The third group is pulling their hair out. He made friends with a rock alien, old news. He built a translator for the said friend alien, old news. They went to a planet where astrophage gets eaten, cool. They literally surfed that planet's atmosphere, with the Hail Mary as humanity's biggest surfboard. What. He did all that with amnesia. What.
At this point the kids are reams deep in paper. Wikipedia calls the guy the Father of Astrobiology. Xenobiology. Xenolinguistics. Light-Year Travel. First Contact. First man to ingest an alien. What. There is no way this is all fitting in a powerpoint.
All while Ms. Olivia sits in the back of the classroom while the kids clamor for the presentation. An old, worn, and fraying bean bag of the Earth in her hand. Still the best eighth grade teacher, she thinks.
I like when stratt wore the white/light colored sweater when telling grace that he would be sent up to space, and that she wore it underneath the black too. Growing up with a chinese family white has always been associated with death to me
Though in more modern cases some people will wear black or grey or a muted color. Stuff like bright red is usually forbidden. In general I like that she wears a lot of neutral tones hehe, makes her look like a mourner
Stanford Pines falls from his pocket dimensional portal after running from spider beast that's out for his blood (he stole one of the guy's prized artifacts to put into his quantum destabilizer, still a work in progress). In his rush to safety, he falls on his portal device, and now he's officially stuck on this new dimension that he couldn't have even bothered to properly look at in his rush. For all he knows, this place could be his grave.
Except, he looks around. And sees that he's.. on a beach. A rocky beach (sand would've hurt less, probably), but a beach nonetheless. Is he in Earth? Maybe a planet similar to it. He dusts himself and tries to stand up. Woah. It's a little heavier here, or is he just tired from the chase?
So he's probably in a weird version of Earth with twice the gravity, and his portal device is broken. He doesn't spot any hostiles from anywhere around him though, and he takes this moment of reprieve to pull up his locator instead. And he reels back.
This planet is not supposed to hold life— or at least, human life. But he's not suffocating from ammonia, nor is he burning to a crisp for the past.. five minutes he's been here. He must be mistaken, he must've hit his head, his device must've been shaken from the fall and is betraying him.
There's a sound from behind him, a series of notes that sound like a whale call, a bird trill, and a low hum of a woodwind all at once. Stanford whips around with a gun poised, and the creature shrieks. A five-legged rock encased in a glass body suit. Two of its arms raised in surrender.
Stanford, of course, doesn't lower his gun just yet, although he plans to interrogate this creature who seems to be a relative of the beast that had been chasing him just a dimension ago. He doesn't get to pipe up a single question though.
There's a battle cry to his other side, and before he could turn to see what the hell it is, he's tackled to the ground with a very human man who has already grappled with the gun and chucked it towards the sea. Now he's armed with less of a gun and one more question: How in the multiverse is it possible for a human to be in a planet like 40 Eridani?
Cue shenanigans, nerding out, and multiversal/multidimensional/multiplanetary geniuses doing fuck all. Rocky, Stanford learns, is one hell of an engineer. With one hell of a material that would've been impossible to create anywhere else (Stanford ends up spending way too much time studying xenonite). But it did get him a nigh-indestructible components for the gun he lost— correction: thrown to the sea by the only other human around. Ryland Grace seems to be very apologetic about it. He doesn't apologize for defending Rocky though. Stanford thinks it's alright. For one, it's nice to know he's not the only human with an alien friend; and two, his gun got an upgrade. This is probably the best vacation he'll have before he inevitably has to leave.
I missed the hundredth mark BUT!!!!!!! Happy 102 works to the best crossover twins ever
Learning that Stratt canonically did pirate everything they could fit in a drive to go with Hail Mary (movies, probably games, probably the entirety of wikipedia?) and then coming across the term "Pirate Queen Stratt" has opened my eye to another au: Pirates.
Pirate Queen Stratt docks somewhere, sees this nerdy mofo walking down the street and decides "hmm. yeah. bring him in." And they drag poor seasick Ryland where there's no land in the horizon for miles. But this nerd is so obsessed with the stars and they need a new navigator after the one they had fell overboard or something. Ryland is good at it too. They feed him lemons. That's how you know he's important.
Anyway, Stratt is searching for something, as pirates do. But she's rich enough! Exactly, she wants something else. Something lives in the deep and Stratt wants her hands on it. Whatever it is, no ship has ever come out in one piece, and the area its eating ships at is growing in size. They'll come across it in one of the major trading routes at some point, and Stratt doesn't really like that. They go towards the storm.
At some point, Ryland Grace who has rarely left land and never really planned to, gets thrown around during a particularly rough patch. He gets thrown overboard, probably. Aw, shucks. There goes our second navigator. He's probably left to die, or so he believes. He can't even swim.
But for some reason, a creature of the deep takes pity on this flailing, drowning human. And he gets dragged ashore to some island or whatever, with a large crab that seems to be weirdly intelligent. It's intelligent enough that Grace naming it "Crabby" got him a noise that probably means a big fat no. So, Grace names his new friend to the next best thing it looks like: Rocky.

Rocky and Grace's first meeting in the bridge except their little dance is the Macarena.
Grace in Erid with his students in a conga line.
Grace playing classical music and there's a group of Eridians going in a circle like those orchestra raves.
Grace trying to teach YMCA to the Eridians.
There's Eridians bouncing around everywhere, two arms crossed to their front. They have learned Gangnam Style.
Thinking about (movie) Strattland's secret third thing. More than friends enough for the speculation to go around but not enough to be lovers. Neither of them really thought about that possibility. Stratt has the world to keep from freezing and Grace has his students' work to grade. Neither actively looked for it until it found them and they never really named it. There was something. There was love. But they don't call it that. Can they even call it that? I don't want you like that, but clearly you matter. No one understands me more than you do, and I you. There are no butterflies nor fireworks in my chest but there's a yawning pit just for you. I can and will live the rest of my life without you. You'll be there for the last seven minutes of it.
I do see them as aroace4aroace, if that's a thing. My shaylas.

Ryland Grace // The Hanged Man
Art so sad on tumblr. Edits so sad on tt. Fics so sad on ao3. For a movie with such a hopeful interpolation of Dies Irae everyone is just Sad™. Including me. Lemme fix that. *Throws you wholesome hcs*
• Grace accidentally(?) raises a bunch of nerds on Erid. Starting by naming them with movie references. Obi-Wan Kenobi is wrangling with Spock on whose turn is it to sit in front of the class.
• Grace def celebrates human holidays with them. Someone on Erid asked him about human cultures and customs, and he figured that he might as well show demonstrations? Eridian children are delighted to learn of Halloween.
• Y'all know who Dr. Tatiana Erukhimova is? Except it's Grace doing the wildest science demonstrations. He sets himself on fire. He nearly poisons himself. He breaks a bone by demonstrating physics using his body instead of an instrument like a normal person.
• Rocky is concerned with the fact that Grace is willing to be a subject of some experiments. As long as he wasn't bound and held down against his will. They start by adjusting light and temperature inside the dome to emulate seasons. Somehow they end up able to grow plant life and some flora. Grace is ecstatic to see the first fleck of green sprout between a crack in the rocks. Plant grow on Rocky too, question? No, Rocky. You breathe high levels of ammonia.
• Grace learns to communicate with instruments. He learns he's good with a DIY piano he made with Rocky's help. But he likes the harmonica a little bit more.
• He learns echolocation. Or is taught by the kids. Sometimes the class is permitted to enter the dome with their tiny little suits, and Grace blindfolds himself to play hide and seek with the kids on the beach.
• Grace finds a drive filled with movies that Stratt may or may not have pirated for him to take to space. They manage to build a player for the Eridians to watch. The kids seem to like Wall-E quite well.
• He knitted the little Earth bean bag himself and tries to pick up knitting in Erid. Tries to teach the kids how to knit too despite... claws. It not working doesn't deter him from knitting the children their own little sweaters anyway.
• Grace def has NOT let go of the terrible puns and references. He's in some kind of meeting with the Eridian scientists, and then he goes like "Whoop, there it is" levels of awkwardness. It comes with being Dr. Ryland Grace, I fear.
• In the same vein: he learns/understands Eridian at the end of the movie without the need for translator, I'm sure he learns of Eridian catchphrases too. He might or might not hang some of it on his walls.
• They figure out a way to make Eridian jewelry that doesn't burn human skin. The moment they do, Grace is immediately flocked by it. Like Florence Pugh in that one scene in Midsommar with all the flowers.
• Speaking of Midsommar, Grace can't dance to save his life. He's got that little shimmy shimmy with Rocky, but he figures that if he were to teach Eridians about human culture he has to act out some of it. He tries anyway, and no one else would know how terrible some of his attempts are.
• He works his ass off to try and help Eridians see color. Reads up on synesthesia, reads all the descriptors he needs. He struggles. White-Blue are cold while Red-Orange are hot. Stars are opposite, question? Yes, well. That's a different story.
• He still records. On his laptop, and on another device that the Eridians made, so his lessons can still be viewed by future generations of Eridian children. At some point in their future, Erid manages to throw a hello probe towards Earth, containing the life Grace lived in Erid. I'm vouching for you guys.
• Grace understands Eridian well enough and could probably reply with an instrument as well, but the puppet show lives on. You're not going to convince me that Grace isn't the kind of teacher to make huge visual aids for his kinds, even back on Earth. He def puts on a show.

There's probably a lot more but my brain is all juiced up. No thoughts only phm.
actually! i'm delighted to inform you that some of these things are in the book!
Instruments: In the scene that Grace teaches his Eridian students, he sits down behind an elaborate organ-like instrument, and begins to play
Pirated movies: Stratt downloaded literally everything to ever exist to the Hail Mary, and even attends a court case relating to it in the book that we see ourselves
No translator needed: He does this in both the movie and the book!
lawd i have GOT to read the book. I've heard the audiobook is like, 16 hours worth. I've been missing at least 13 hours worth of content outside the movie
