A young man holds a sign stands where Catherine “Kitty” Genovese was first attacked on the 30th anniversary of her murder. Kitty was attacked by a man named Winston Mosley as she walked home from work during the first hours of March 13th, 1964. After being stabbed multiple times, she was able to break away from her assailant and flee to the apartment complex where she lived. Although she made it inside, many of the doors were locked and Kitty was unable to reach safety. She was lying in a hallway, desperately clinging to life, when Mosley caught up to her. He raped Kitty and stabbed her again before leaving her to die. At the age of 28, Kitty bled to death in the arms of a neighbor.
Kitty Genovese’s murder shot to infamy after the New York Time published an article about the case. It made the claim that up to 38 people heard or saw the young woman being attacked, but did not call the police for help. Some witnesses said they feared getting involved. This lead to a large scale discussion about the Bystander Effect, sometimes referred to as the Genovese effect, in which it is thought that people are less likely to help someone in distress if there is a large amount of people nearby.
