Tip Tuesday #139
Prime your prop or armor before painting to produce a stronger, truer colour. Some materials will absorb paint and painting pieces that aren’t uniform in colour might affect how the paint appears.Â
You also want to consider what color primer to use depending on what your base coat will be. Use white if your base coat is going to be a light color, use black if it’s a darker color. For silver, use black.  Brown is good for yellow, red, orange, and brown/gold metallics. That said, if you’re on a budget or working with what you have, go with what’s best for you. Light grey is a decent neutral color if you have to go with one color.
A grey or black primer coat can be good if you plan on doing chip weathering. Alternating primer colors between layers can good to see where your last layer of paint is and making sure you aren’t layering on too much paint.Â
Alternating colors is really great if you’re going to wet sand, but make sure both primer colors are wet sanding safe (it’ll say on the can).
Finally, filler primer can be a godsend for smoothing out surfaces.Â
For craft foam armor, I use a base coat of latex paint to clog the foam pores, then a primer coat of matte black, then my metallic whatever before the clear gloss coat. No, this cannot be finished the night before the con. Yes, it looks awesome when you take the additional time to add the layers sufficiently.
If your budget is tight and you’re using craft foam or EVA, try a few coats of mod podge diluted 1:1 with water (i keep an airtight container full and use it for paper mache too), then 3-4 coats of primer, then whatever colour you were going to use. When you’re done rmb to seal it; i use modpodge bc i’m broke but whatever works.

Simple Alterations Tutorial
Otakon hands out these great swag bags when you win something in their cosplay competitions, but the con-shirts inside tend to run a bit on the large side. I probably should have just exchanged it at their merch booth, but since I forgot to do that, it means I can show all of you how to alter something.
Flip the garment inside out, and pin how you would like it to fit, works best with a second person. I used a normal shirt that fit me underneath the otakon one as a guide for the neckline.
Make sure points of pins face in such a way so that when you take it off you won’t stick yourself.
Use tailors chalk to mark out all of your lines
Use a serger or a regular machine with a zig-zag stitch to make new seams across the whole thing.
Test fit, and take more in if necessary
Chalk out new hems
Edge the new hems and tack them down with a nice top stitch
Enjoy your now fitting shirt
This can also work well with any second hand clothing or costumes. This tutorial works best with tops, but you can also easily hem pants that are too long this way as well.
If you do not want alterations to be perminant, make sure you use a looser stitch and do not trim anything, you can always fold in seams and flat-fell them so you could technically rip all the seams out and return things to their original state.
