āDonāt youĀ dare,ā
Arthurās hand froze over Cromwellās skull as Rhys slapped his fingers away and down and snatched up bone, gripping the jawless head by the temples and pulling it from reach. Arthur went to take it from him, but they froze as Matthew rolled over from his place and bundled into a quilt. When he didnāt wake, Rhys snapped his gaze back to Arthur, and he found himself being dragged from the study with its electric faux fire and his son draped over the sofa, sleeping like the dead. They were suddenly in the hall, and he found himself pinned against the wall by his brotherās forearm. āYou are not waking mother again.ā
UK siblings!
so I canāt draw for shit, but I can make silly family portraits in Crusader Kings 3. also I am simply choosing to ignore Himaruyaās UK siblings for various reasons, so these guys are really ocs. but if you see me making headcanons for Arthur and his siblings, Iām using these guys.
I saw the post you reblogged about eye nation's colours. I thought I'd share mine on eye-related headcanon.
Arthur's eyes due to his magic and connection with his Gaelic family are that bright acid day-glow green. but if you catch him as his just was and look into what you expect acid green. You'll several different things. Brown, brown-hazle, hazle-blue, blue or this green-blue. Arthur's eyes have changed in reflection of his demographics along with his hair. the which went from bright orange-ginger to that the dirty blonde-red. he's been paling it with lye for centuries and then once dye became available dying it to even out the blonde and red in his hair.
If he's out of England too long his eyes fade to greenish blue until they turn this vibrant deep sapphire blue. if I'm honest his brown-eyed flaming bright orange hair looks from before the Saxons came is very striking.
By the time the Vikings left he was a bright strawberry blonde and after the French settled that's when he actually became blonde.
That's pretty interesting, I like your HCs a lot - the idea of eyes and hair changing to match demographics isn't something I've considered before. That's a very unique take on it, NGL. I'll put down some descs of some of their eye colours below so you can see my takes on it. I've already talked about their hair colours before. England: Green-blue, like the sea you remark. Except it ripples, white foam cresting around his pupil as he stares menacingly at you. There is not even a smile offered as you drown in that murk, tugged under by an unseen phanthom. The smell of salt clings to you, followed by a menacing tang of gunfire; the sea is his eyes, you realise, paralysed as you watch a towering wave form and shatter against flecks of dark brown - rocks, you realise, jutting from the throes of the sea. You can almost hear the distant boom as waves crash again and again. He blinks and the illusion is replaced by the slow flow of meandering rivers, intercepted by the creep of black branches against a grey sky. Another blink and its a more verdant green, and another and the illusions are gone entirely. Oh. His eyes were only blue. Or are they green? You can never remember, each time this surly customer comes around. Scotland: His eyes are a bright blue, though you have sworn once they were a dark grey; flashes of light behind his iris, though he smiled placidly, fury thudded like distant thunder. You were carried away, adrift on monstrous gales that lashed you high, clouds scudding below you. Another look at it is the same fathoms as an earlier customer, except that it swirls, churning and twisting and tugging, the depths of a vaguely recalled body of water coming to the fore of your mind, something about the Corryvreckan and its depths. You get lost there, and by the time you get your focus, he is gone now. Whenever he returns now, he does not meet your eye, though on occassion you have regarded the Corryvreckan and watch the swirls of white drift through, torn between a storm-fraught sky and the din of the sea's might, unable to choose which scenery is your liking. Oh well, his eyes are really beautiful, you muse, worthy of a painting or two. Wales: Her eyes are brown. You swear they were always brown and will always be, but there is a glint of gold you spied once, reptilian and proud, the furl of a banner held high and a dragon's gaze snapping wide open; You'd stumbled and caught yourself in her arms, and what was brown was like fire, the cracking and peeling of bark, and then she blinked, and there was a gleam of bright red, like berries, the bent bows of flexible yew. She apologised, and you swore that her pupils had turned to slits, the wakening of something deep in the earth, stark brown giving way to something welling deep inside. Another occassion, you had called out to her with a cheerful smile, and her eyes were as black as coal, mournful and smoggy. She said she was having a bad day. You saw that sight too many times, but she never explained. She insisted her eyes were only brown. You swore to yourself otherwise. It was coal fires, yew trees and dragon scales. But she insisted it was brown and you were mad. Ireland: Her eyes are hazel. On occassion, they seem greener - more vivid, until they almost seem to hurt to look at, sharper than any thorn. This comes and goes, of course, and others swear they were more pale brown, withered and dry stalks, poor eating. Sometimes you swear, that her eyes are many colours - shifting from gold to orange to yellow to a faint dusk, the sun setting - though she never explains. She never says anything to you really, only passing by on the few occassions she visits family or friends. Hope, you decide is what her eyes are, forged a long time ago when times were harder, burned into her gaze. You overheard a claim that her eyes were once gold a long, long time ago. You wished you could've seen it. But no, it was hazel.
Eire/Nuala: You've never seen a deeper or darker green, you've never realised how vivid this deep green is. sometimes you see flashes of brighter green through the forest. You look at your calendar and it's April. bright spring. when you see her again months have passed when you see her you swear they're clearer and less saturated, it's now January. Once again she ambles her way into your store. This time there's a warm tint of gold to her eyes the colour is saturated again this time bright, with flecks of gold, yellow and some brown, It's mid-October. Finally sits sitting outside the display window curly rd hair platted down and out the way, her skin glowing and her, you sear you can count a whole Kaleidoscope of colours to warm green backdrop, oranges, and yellows. strikes warm brown, a little flicker of blue maybe even pink. Its mid-July.
Dublin (Oc, I hope you don't mind)
It's funny when you see him, russet brown hair slicked back into a ponytail, He got the scattering of freckles the lardy does, but a distinctive scar crosses over a right eye. his skin glows clear much cooler than hers. Then it's like you can fall into them, they're blue just like a deep open sea. Dark saturated blue. then the dark tangle of seaweed bobbing below the surface, the twists and tangles crossing his irises making near inky black shadows.
Come summer you see him again, something becoming clearer to you now upon you season time meeting, it's his left the sits motionless milky a faded in its colour. H flinches when foot his a table leg. Both his eyes are lighter now but it's the one that's got a scar over its moves to take in the new sights the baskets of hanging flowers. you realise the bright green-blue moves in tandem with seasonal algae blooms he mentioned last time. his left eye is far less green than his right one.
Ulster/Northern Ireland
His eyes are surely out the strange people you seem to meet, the most consistent in colour year-round, h's dark brown hair and wide rather lamb-like eyes, bright but the colour is overcast with grey, and green-grey, he tells of family strife between his brother and Uncle. The colour drains further from his eyes as he stands in front of you. he is tall and lanky. no freckles, but a present warmth in his eyes even as he speaks of trouble.
The next time you see him his eyes barely have any green left, he's gaunt and leans on the couch with a chesty cough as he says how the fighting became too much and his brother the youngest boy. Arlan moved out. Ma is distraught and Uncle will, he's livid he and the little brother aren't on good terms. His skin is dull like he's covered in ash. it's January 15th 1919.
R.O.I
He comes into the shop, he looks like he's been through hell and back but the eye you can is glowing a bright forest green, half his face is covered in bandages and leaning on a crunch but laughing. A smattering of freckles over his nose and scattered around his eyes.
He's whistling a song, wild ginger hair so bright in the light it looks like flames. He got his uniform cap on, a new flag of Green, white and Orange draped over his shoulder he pulls it up holding it aloft to cheer to a congregation of his friends standing out the floor.
You swear a mix of sooty grey and gold swirling in his vivid green eye. the year is 1922 and The Republic of Ireland, is now a sovereign nation.
I was just thinking about how special they are to each other
This gives me happy and sad feelings
Been feeling pretty down lately, so I doodled some scenes from a hurt/comfort, Father/son dynamic Arthur and Alfred drabble I wrote to make myself feel better :ā)Ā

Pic 11: In my dreams
Do you think Arthur ever reflects on the kind of father he was and actually plans how to fix things or did he just start softening up at some point?
I think once "The Long Peace" kicked in and it was clear Alfred was on the rise and Britain was in decline, Arthur had to re-evaluate. Jack hates him for a good long while after he's scapegoated in 1942, Matt was practically exiled after Suez, Zee is rejecting her Englishness out right. Its adapt or die. Love them and show it or lapse into irrelevance.
I think he actually started looking at human parents. In the post war era, child mortality dropped exponentially, there's a baby boom. Parents are not afraid to love their children because the risk of loss practically disappears.
Keeping them in the fold relies on connections. If Great Britain no long has force, Little England can't be an unpleasant controlling, frigid prick. English literature is the great defining artistic trait of this tongue. Words, the ones that live in his head have to move through his lips.
I think once he started saying things, it got a bit addictive. Nicely done, godspeed, good luck. Be safe, I love you. I love you. I love you! It feels good to say it. My boys, my sons, my girl, my daughter, my children, my children! Its like heroine once it starts and rolls on. And that... No one knows what to do with that. It infuriated Alfred, who found it extremely manipulative. He views it much like Brighid in that it's just yet another of Arthur's power plays. And that started a very long roll of things that needed to be addressed and fixed. So he slowly started at least tried to stop, even if he won't address the past.
I don't mind rain
I'm the person who mentioned having Feelings for Rhys and Alasdair worrying about Arthur.
1. This is going to be hard to explain, but I'm really honored that you were so excited that I picked up on it? Like... You're super cool and your writing is so amazing, so picking up on something that made you excited makes me feel really special š
2. How does Arthur feel about that dynamic? He's so bad at emotion - does he appreciate that he's still that baby in their eyes? Hate it? Not even realize that his big brothers worry about him even when he's the king of the world?
And does he have a similar instinctive reaction like they do? No matter how bad the relationship is, they're still the big brothers who took care of him when he was too small to take care of himself? Like... If something happens and he needs help/reassurance/advice, would it be a conscious thought process of "our relationship sucks right now, but they're my brothers so they'll still help", or a more instinctive "I need help, so my brothers will help because that's what happens"? (I don't know if that explanation makes any sense...)
1.) im just a goblin with a keyboard like anyone else lmao i was so pleased and honored too sob omfg. AAAAAh okay. thank you!! just eejirogeoijioejg thank you
2.) He does, I think. He's not emotionally competent when it's his own vulnerability, but he pays attention when it could give him an upper hand. Furthermore, he knows his brothers will always hesitate on that death blow, and it gave him openings on the battlefield when they were younger. Sometimes he took the opening and put a sword through their sternums when Rhys or Alasdair hesitated, their mother's voice ringing in their ears to watch out for each other. Sometimes Arthur heard her voice too and threw down his sword, mumbling it wasn't honourable despite being a man with almost none of that anyway. He often views the relationship with a brutal practicality that denies the fact he sometimes feels the same way. His brothers might have fully believed his heart was cold and dead in his chest for long periods of time. Arthur is a brutal, practical man. Their fondness of him always gave him an in to keep them on his side longer than their own self-interest would have demanded. And he knows and uses that.
There's an instinct too it, some deeply, deeply unsettling trust Arthur has and hates. It never showed under ordinary circumstances, but when he was all of twelve years old and the Danelaw was slicing him in half, he reached for Rhys. In much the same way Matt is Alfred's emotional support Canadian, Rhys was often the person Arthur goes too. Rhys has always been the most 'loyal' and they spent 500 years as the closest thing to real family they have, with Rhys barely hanging onto his own culture in the face of English dominance, but hanging on nonetheless.
I don't think, though, that Arthur takes their help for granted or even assumes. Fucker knows what he's done, and he knew what he was doing when he did it. And what it would cost. Alfred is his father's son and they both weighed their siblings love against their ambitions, and it was not enough to stay their hands. Brighid especially, he knows he's burned. Rhys has always been easier, Alasdair somewhere in between. He doesn't feel guilt, exactly, Arthur will never regret anything in his life. But I do think after he realized his diminishing role in the world after WW2, and it sank in he had just looked down the barrel of possible annihilation, he started a change for the better. And that included being less of a fucking dick to his siblings.
Manor and cottages please!
eopgopkerg I have a minor in historical preservation so this got a wee bit long. Shout out to @oumaheroes and @acemapleeh from whose headcanons and aesthetics I've adapted from and added a nice big scoop of neurodivergent.
So! The cottages. I think one up in the North of England, in the border lands that he and Alasdair have been fighting back and forth over for centuries. There was a structure there sometime in the Celtic period where their mother was head of a large, sprawling household that later received Roman upgrades during the period when Lucius sought to conquer Scotland by ranging north of Hadrian's wall. That didn't long, as he eventually settled back south, made forcibly contented with Arthur. Alasdair remained his mother's son and his mother's son alone. Today there is a 17th century brick house there in more the Scottish style that they built as something of a peace offering when King James took the English throne after Elizabeth's death. Alfred had been born, and Arthur was at least trying to keep decent relations with his brothers. There is also another one down by the seaside that got remodelled in the 19th century.
So for the manor to begin with, I think that Arthur's primary source of income before the Age of Sail would be his estate. These were functional farms and households. Grain would be grown, cattle and fowl would be kept, cheese would be made, wine women and song across the empire for all. During the Norman Period, I think William the Conqueror partially bribed him into compliance with his own estate. The house he built in the 11th century would become the core of the current building. The photos I'm using here are from a similar Norman building to what I'm imagining called the Saltford Manor House. This is what it would have looked like before the Elizabethan Era.
This space below in Arthur's house as it stands today functions as a side or servant's entrance, but was the original home's primary entrance. In my mind, if you follow those stairs up, that's Arthur's bedroom and private sitting room where his children were prohibited from entering. There was also a small space where Arthur kept Alfred's cradle and a small play space as before Virginia was properly established, he was anxious about Alfred's survival and kept him close at all times. This is where Jack would have broken the statue of Arthur's mother before fleeing to the main house.
The other one I think was also the result of Alfred's birth. For a long time, Arthur wouldn't have much minded city squalor or overcrowding or even really very disgusting conditions because it's not as if he can properly die. His people suffer, so will he. Then pops along his bouncing baby boy and good lord! Filth and pestilence will not do. They lived there primarily until the manor was remodelled.
So then the elizabethan remodel comes into play. Arthur got all safety obsessed. Rebuilt the barns away from the house to keep the animal's disease out there, made a nursery with its own fireplaces and grates, Alfred had a massive canopied cradle and then bed, a saltwater bathtub. All the innovations the Elizabethan era had to give, his bouncing baby boy got. Rhys really worried about Arthur's mental state as he forced the builders to start over twice because his maternal anxiety got the better of him, and he redesigned the house again. Eventually Alfred's childhood bedroom would look like this, but with an absolute menagerie of rocking horses, toy soldiers, blocks, play towers, piles of books chests of clothes.
Also built when Alfred learned to walk was the long gallery. This one is from Hatfield House where Queen Elizabeth often had her primary residence as a princess. Arthur never had any vases on the furniture because Alfred and later Jack would destroy it. This gave them lots of sunshine and space to run without catching a chill during the rainy British⦠well everything. Also added would have been the main hall, which was used as a great hall for feasting and state work in the original days and later as a dining room.

He added a larger library in the 1840s with one of two very large Chesterfield sofas Matt often sleeps on because his gangly ass outgrew most Victorian beds. The other is in the living room/library at the London house. Fun fact, Chesterfield is an Anglo-Canadian word for sofa because of its association with the British furniture company. He also added new kitchens, bathrooms, a big fancy bathroom for himself and his fuck buddies or other guests and slightly simpler ones for other members of the household.

will you do a character sheet for yao? please roast this old man
this is my personal take on him (partly biased by how heās basically one of my great-grandpas and itās always my duty to roast him). CW for some body horror.Ā
1. He might've changed his surname to ē (huang; emperor) instead of ē (wang; king) if not for the First Emperor. Because there can be Only One. After Qin Shi Huang kicked the bucket, he could do whatever he wanted of course, but ē just stuck. I think he may have changed his name at various points throughout history, but heās partial toĀ ē after all this time and he usually comes back to it.Ā
2. Heavy smoker nowadays. Bad habit that he knows he should break but he has a hard time doing so. Heās likeĀ āsmh canāt believe the fucking PSI is 400 again in Beijingā *lights up a pack of zhonghuas*. Heās trying, though. Keep going, old man.Ā š
3. Vietnam/Lien has all the receipts on him; sheās pretty old too. One huge flaw I see Yao having is that he can be pretty condescending at times. And he may often depict himself as being Pretty Chill and just generously dispensing Confucius, writing systems, Taoism, fashion styles and other fun things to his neighbours āunlike those Western Barbarian Empiresā (very untrue). Lien: You lying old goat, I fought multiple wars against your dynasties and thatās even before the 20th century!* (shoutout to my grandmaās side of the family).Ā
Whenever you mention Rhys or Alasdair worrying about Arthur I get a lot of Feelings.
Because it's a really interesting juxtaposition - most of the time, we see him as the arrogant bastard who clawed his way to the top of the world. And then you mention them worrying about him, and I'm reminded that he's the baby of that generation.
Idk how to describe my feelings about that. He's a shithead, and a tyrant, and also the fussy baby that Rhys rocked to sleep and Alasdair snuggled when it was cold and Arthur was scared. And idk how to process like... The emotional dynamics of that. He's a bastard, and he's fucking up all of their relationships so bad, and he's also their baby brother trying to rule the world and be a father.
I do not really have a point to this ask, just that those little mentions of Rhys and Alasdair worrying add a whole new dimension to all their characters and dynamics that I find really, really interesting. You're so good at just tossing in these little lines that absolutely blow my mind š
Not me wiggling in joy over here barely contained in my office chair grinning because YES.
They have this incredibly fucked up dichotomy of hating each other to their cores in a certain moment but their instincts are ancient. Alasdair and Rhys so often look at this ambitious, hardheaded, conniving little fucking BASTARD and hate him so much. But their instincts are ancient and enduring and howl like the wind above the troubled waters of that specific moment. And they say, unendingly, that this bastard that has caused so much pain and cost so much blood, was once also a baby in their mother's arms and has their mother's eyes and their mother's temper. He killed their mother, replaced her. His ambition has nearly killed them. But now here he is with a baby on his hip, offering a devil's deal. And they know that the offer is: āJoin the imperial core, help me, make yourself complicit in my evil.ā But there is wealth to be had, opportunities to seize, others will suffer instead of them. And there is bribery and legacy. Nova Scotia, New South Wales.
I'm so glad you picked that up, its something that lives in my head a lot and I'm just all soft over here someone noticed.
