Hi! I absolutely love pitcher plants and I’ve been thinking of getting one recently. The only thing is that I’m not sure how to provide them with food?? I live in a city + it’s almost winter time so I won’t have access to any insects. Where do you get yours/what do you recommend? Thanks :)
With carnivorous plants it's actually not necessary at all to provide food, as long as the plant has adequate lighting and water it can flourish without any insects.
The temp dropped in my region significantly so most of my plants got moved inside, and they still seem to find the occasional fly or stink bug.
If you'd like to feed your plants though a lot of local petstores sell meal worms and fruit flies.
Both of my nepenthes and most of my sarracenia i got from a local greenhouse, but the rest of my CPs came from californiacarnivores.com or predatoryplants.com they are both very reliable stores with fast shipping. Just be careful when it comes to what plant you're buying, you want to make sure you aren't buying a plant you can't care for properly (like say a tropical nepenthes if you can't provide the proper temp/sunlight)
Hey! I have a N. Ventrata that does not produce pitchers, but i don't know what to do to make it produce them! Yours looks so healthy. It is in a North facing window, my only option. Do you have any tips??
Im still mostly a beginner, so i might not have the most knowledge. If it's getting plenty of light during the day it could be a water problem. I mist my plants daily (if theyre not out in the rain) and i always make sure the soil is consistantly damp and never ever dries out. Don't be afraid to water your plant a hefty amount as long as the roots arent waterlogged.
I suggest visiting the r/SavageGarden subreddit's sidebar, they have some very helpful links. Plus maybe searching through the page and seeing if other people have had your issue.
Good luck! Though my one small N. Ventrata is doing very well, my large one still struggles even though it recieves the same care. Some plants are just tricky
Gifted my friend a nepenthes clipping, i hope it takes root, never done a clipping before
i have arrived at ICPS……….it is as lit as previously envisioned
Nepenthes lingulata and Nepenthes jamban (left to right)
Both species are native to the montane forests of northern Sumatra and are sympatric meaning that they often occur together.
