The decorations on this tsuba were placed within two holes on either side of the central opening. On the right side is a tiger. On the left is a small stand of bamboo. Tigers are signs of strength and bamboo represents longevity.  18th to first half 19th century, Japan.  The WaltersArt Museum

This ‘tsuba’ (sword guard) is made of eight fans depicting various natural motifs radiating around the central opening. Two fans are slightly truncated to allow for the hair pick’s opening. This vertical woodblock print is a celebrated masterpiece designed by the legendary ukiyo-e icon Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798–1861). The print features the infamous outlaw-hero Shiratsuka Jūemon (often associated with the Shirabhoshi or "White Handles" street gang) standing in a striking, defiant pose, while an inset portrait represents his lover, the famous courtesan Komurasaki.
