As someone not involved in the development of pillowfort but am a web developer, I think you should lower your expectations, but not for the reason you think.

Pillowfort is a baby. A newborn. A smol bab. If you were here during the early days of Tumblr, think of that. 

Pillowfort simply cannot be the immediate solution to your woes. It needs to be nurtured and cared for to become a mature and happy adult. 

If you want Pillowfort to work, they’ll need feedback, advice, bug reports, etc. This is a chance to make Pillowfort the Ao3 of Fanfiction.net. It’s not gonna happen overnight, you need to give it time and love and it’ll get there. 

If you don’t want to pay money to get into the beta, that’s ok. It will be open to the public soon enough and you won’t have to pay a dime. Their financial model moving forward sounds good (a subscription fee for super extra features), but even an Ao3 model would work swell for them probably. 

We’re living in an interesting time on the internet. Governments across the world are cracking down on content and yet community run websites are starting to thrive more and more. 

I’ve been a member of @pillowfort-io for a while, but am not overly active on there because, at the time especially, the community was small, and also because I’m mostly a mobile user and the mobile site isn’t as user friendly as an app. However, I thought I’d give you guys a look at the site, and share my (limited) experience with it so you can make an informed decision regarding spending the 5 bucks to get an early activation code, joining after beta or joining at all. (under a read-more because there’s a lot of photos)

This is your, for lack of a better word, ‘dash’. Right now mine is full of pokemon because no matter where you go, there will always be a pokemon community so it was a safe bet for me to follow ^^;

To your left you can see all the critical aspects of the site, from replies to followers to blacklist settings, all easily accessible and available.

A former staff engineer, who recently left Tumblr and asked to remain anonymous for professional reasons, tells Vox that the NSFW ban was “in the works for about six months as an official project,” adding that it was given additional resources and named “Project X” in September, shortly before it was announced to the rest of the company at an all-hands meeting. “[The NSFW ban] was going to happen anyway,” the former engineer told me. “Verizon pushed it out the door after the child pornography thing and made the deadline sooner,” but the real problem was always that Verizon couldn’t sell ads next to porn.

Porn on Tumblr is something Verizon needs to wipe out if it’s going to make any money off what it thinks is actually valuable about the platform — enormous fandom and social justice communities that, just before the Verizon acquisition, Khalaf was insisting the staff figure out how to better monetize.

also, y'all know fandom and shipping predate Tumblr by literally decades, right?

people *did* ship Vader with and Luke and Leia from the get-go because there was absolutely zero indication they were related and Tumblr’s weird anti-enemy lovers crusade is a fuckin historical anomaly

did I mention that Carrie Fisher shipped Leia and Vader? because Carrie Fisher totally shipped Leia and Vader. oh noes I guess she’s problematic now

I love the implication that people aren’t completely horny for Vader right now, btw. oh you sweet summer child. when I saw Rogue One half the theater nutted during the Hallway of Death scene

for years, i suffered through people making suggestions of things that were things i had done, and either weren’t worth the effort or they actually made things worse. i told them this, and if i was still having any issues with the same problem they’d say something about “well if you’re not gonna listen to any suggestions…” when I did. they’re the one who didn’t listen when i told them that doesn’t work for me. They assume that because I didn’t try it in front of them (which is often impossible), I never tried it. I tried doing my homework as soon as I got home. I tried doing my homework at the table, I tried working where I was comfortable. I tried listening to music, I tried working in silence. I tried using a planner, I tried setting reminders on my phone, I tried. I tell people that I have executive functioning issues and they say that I have to work on it like I haven’t been doing that as long as I’ve had to do things and it’s so much better than it was before. I’m as able as I am now because I’ve spent 18 years working on it.

One of my friends has ADHD, and at one point when her grades dropped her parents took her phone, despite her telling them that the only way she can focus on her homework is to listen to music, for which she needs her phone.

I was in a study hall with another friend, who also has ADHD. Sometimes, they would be able to focus and do their work. Others, they would end up being entirely unable to and would do other stuff. The “instructional support” person would start bothering them about it, insist that they try. As if they hadn’t already done so.
