Danny set the heel of his palms beneath the circlet and pushed upward at the same time he lowered his head. He made a low hissing noise when, instead of sliding cleanly off his head, the circlet glowed, burned, and squeezed his head all the tighter. The jewel nestled in the center of his forehead burned hotter than it had previously, becoming less like a warmed washcloth and more like a sun heated rock. He gasped in pain.

Princess Dorethea grabbed his wrists and pulled his hands away. “Stop this, my lord!”

“You stop it,” Danny snapped back, tearing his wrists free. He backed away from the ghost until his back crashed against a wall. His hand went to his hip, reaching for a blaster that wasn’t there. Instead his hand grasped uselessly at the rope they had tied around his waist to pull his new tunic against his sides. He gritted his teeth, feeling his face flush. “And give me back my clothes. Guys don’t wear tights anymore, you can’t just dress me up whatever way you please.”

Dorathea sniffed and smoothed her hands down her dress. “I assure you, in this kingdom men do wear ‘tights,’ as you put it. Are they uncomfortable, my lord?”

Mulishly, Danny muttered, “No…”

“Then stop whining!”

Summary: Ghost King Phantom has a very important question for his human friend, Danny. Dorky romance ensues.

“Your Highness, you asked for me?”

Phantom turned to face the voice, his cape swooshing grandly with him. The most recent addition to his Human Strays, humans that have wandered into the Ghost Zone and were unable to return to their realm, Danny, was standing there awkwardly, fidgeting nervously in place.

Why was he so nervous? Phantom meant him no harm. In fact, if anyone should be nervous, it’s Phantom!

Ah, but he doesn’t know that, he thought. Before this summoning, Phantom hadn’t spoken to Danny in days. He was too nervous, practicing this very moment over and over. But he figured that after that delay, it only made sense that Danny was nervous.

And, well, he is the Ghost King. Many ghosts would tremble before his presence. He took a great deal of pride in that fact.

This…wasn’t how Danny wanted to meet Phantom.

The other boy sat at the table across from Danny without bothering to meet Danny’s eyes. A small mercy, really. Danny could never have held that gaze for long, and that was before the Capital had gotten their hands on Phantom. His once forest green eyes were now an acid green color that seemed to hold an artificial glow, his white blond hair had been bleached and softened until it sat on his head like a fresh blanket of snow, beautiful and tantalizing, and his skin…

No, Danny couldn’t have held his gaze. He could barely stand to look at Phantom without his face flushing. Unfortunately, Danny was going to have to get over that. Whatever was distressing Phantom, he needed to get over it too.

Danny cleared his throat, and one glowing green eye peeked between the fingers covering Phantom’s face. “You, uh,” Danny started, fumbling the words, “you have a strategy? For keeping me alive? …Right?”

Fright’s assertion continued to echo in Danny’s mind throughout the rest of the party. Shortly after his confession, Danny broke away from his mentor and headed for the kitchen. He remembered that the chef at one point earlier had told Phantom he might need additional help in serving the guests, and as Danny entered through the swinging door to a room in disarray, he found that statement to be painfully true. The knight-in-training was soon ushered back out with a tray in his arms. The chef had given him a short explanation as to what he was actually serving, but as he made his way around the floor, he found himself with a lack of response when asked about the purple mush in each small bowl.
