âHey, Pidge?â Heâs mentally marked the questionable figures before heâs turning his eyes to his sister, pushing his chair to roll in her direction ; thereâs a comfort and familiarity in this, in being able ask and trust her judgment just as easily as breathing. Even if his momentum across the floor near comically inching to a creep. âIs it just me or do these numbers look off to you, too? They seem kinda high.                                            I think Iâm gonna run them again.â
26. â protection
The surety of returning homeâs as unattainable as the stars dotting the sky, their only companions as panicâs buzzing over the comm units. ; thereâs no one to protect them here ( whatâs this? whatâs happening? this is impossible ). Still, they try to reach ; the terrainâs different beneath his feet, it moves differently âââ he moves differently. And itâs between the infinitely high ceiling of the sky and the ever rebounding floor that he feels trapped, crushed, and itâll be the stars that win.              Theyâre supposed to be alone out there, billions of kilometers from home,                                          and somehow thatâs scarier.     But theyâre not alone anymore. Thereâs a dull roar bleeding into the small room, faces thatâll become nothing but blurs crowded in ( how many are there? heâs not sure, he canât bring himself to care through the fear and dread, and heâll become less when he decompartmentalizes this memory ). He swallows when a voice bass underlines the cacophony, and itâs an action that gives him little chance to process the shouting, the pain, the ground.               His first thought is that he isnât going to see the stars again.                           His second is that he just might â- thanks to an old friend.     And he does see them again when heâd been ushered into shuttle and catapulted from the halls that will surely revisit him ; they arenât the same, though. The revelation tastes bitter, though he of anyone shouldâve known better ( but whatâs left if that notionâs gone? ), but heâll keep looking to them as if they can guide him home.                                                         Heâs so lost.     But they donât, not yet at least ; he stays with them, the rebels as he learns. Heâs come to learn all too intimately the Galra Empireâs cruelty, its relentlessness and ever subsuming expansion. And if thereâs a circle heâs drawn that the Galra can never touch, not on his life, then so be it ; he can accept not returning home for that, and heâll become stronger for that. He can come to terms with never seeing his mom, his sister, so long as it means Earth remains untouched and they stay safe ( god knows theyâve gotten too close once before ).                                                         And so he dies.     Not literally, of course, but for all intents and purposes ; itâs a convenient configuration, bittersweetly fallen on his lap with a botched mission. A base buried well beneath the surface of an inhospitable planet, he deprecatingly jokes to himself that itâs his coffin. Vaguely he wonders how much truth there may be to it, and with a shudder in his chest and fire in his movements he refuses to let it be so. Not when a stranger donned in white and green all but explodes through his door like a supernova.                      â----------- Pidge?â                                He hadnât accounted for the stars finding him.

skyguardedâ:
Shiro had had more than a couple of cases where he didnât expect to see either of the things in front of him. Matt and all too familiar buildings. Heâd dreamt about it going a variety of ways. Finding out Matt had died in too many horrible ways to even list. To see his old friend in front of him is almost dizzying. Makes him wonder if heâs really seeing things correctly or if heâd fallen asleep standing up.   âMe? I canât believe youâre alive. I didnât-â he doesnât want to finish the idea. Didnât know if Matt had even survived the next few days let alone years.  âOkay well, to be fairâŚI was dead for a bit. Still not too sure how long, but I definitely did die for some amount of time. So maybe your math wasnât entirely wrong. Jesus, youâre here.â Heâs barely finished the sentence before heâs got Matt in a tight hug.
âYou ----â Heâd barely been able to registerâs Shiroâs admission before heâs falling into the embrace, into the comfort of a dear and here friend ( god, heâs still alive after all this time, and the knowledge eases his shoulders, his mind ). And yet tâs the blast of familiarity silences him, even if itâs just temporarily, and thereâs no hesitation when his arms clasp around Shiro.                          Heâs here ; heâs here ; heâs alive, and heâs here.
And when the questions are much too demanding to be put off any longer and he parts just enough so his hands can perch on Shiroâs shoulders, a steadying force ( a contact that reassures him still that, yes, heâs still tangible before him ).  âYou died? Shit, Shiro youâre the one who died, and youâre amazed Iâm here? How does that even work?                                              How are you even here?â
blazeroughtâ:
â Letâs go with THE FIRST OPTION, mostly because that comparison automatically lead my mind down the path of metal bikini and I donât really feel like thinking about wearing one of those. â Keith sighed, taking a moment from his guard to peek over Mattâs shoulder. He wasnât sure what he expected to see other than work that he didnât really understand but⌠HE WAS CURIOUS.
â How much longer? â
âIf you ask me, that isnât an opportunity you turn down lightly, but suit yourself.â He means it to tease, clapping his hands together as heâs done ---- finally ---- and blinks up to his apparently nosy and dear partner in crime ( not that heâs particularly concerned by this ). Or whatever it was they wanted to call their escapades. âWho am I to judge?â
âJust finished up, so stand back. Just in case, yâknow? Safety first.â                             He isnât about to mention the irony here.
goofbcllâ:
âOf course. Of course, It would take awhile. But, we might actually reach the stars at this point. Visit other planets that we couldnât really visit due to the awful terrain. Imagine going to Pluto? It would be no problem with the tech we have now.â
âPluto.â Of all Hunkâs said, itâs what he fixates on and nearly laughs, not unkindly ; thereâs a layer of amazement in his voice. Not too long ago heâd embarked on a doomed mission to one of its satellites, and now theyâve well surpassed what had been considered conceivable ( but he isnât wrong ).  âYouâre right : itâd be no problem at all. Weâd be in the intergalactic sphere  ----  with enough time of course ---        And its implications beyond space exploration. Botany? Medicine? For example ---â
â Where have you been? Weâve been worried sick! â
The breathâs ragged as heâs slowing to a standstill, each step a rallentando to a final thump against the packed dirt ( though his heart isnât gracing him the same reprieve, not yet ) ; attention dances between her and where they emerged. Theyâd been delayed a bit, sure, and eventfully so, but theyâve made it back in varying states of okay ; thatâs enough for him then, with his sisterâs words ringing in his ears, but thatâs it. Thatâs all. They have to be moving again.         âSorry âbout that -----  we got a little tied up on our way.â
âYâready to go? âCause weâve gotta go, and weâve gotta go now.                                  Unless you want company.â

âYou got me, detective. Looks like Iâm going to liarâs jail.â Itâs said with something of mock seriousness, with a solemness exaggerated ----- and heâs to hold a mirrored expression longer than whatâs likely necessary. And yet it cracks, an upturn to lips peaking through, a glimmer of humor dancing in his look.
Candid pics? No, take cryptid pics of me. Make me as blurry as possible. My eyes glow. Iâm in places I logically canât be in.

âIâve gotta say : this is way cooler than Iâd ever though possible.â Sure, heâd had a thorough tour not too long earlier, but thereâs always something new capturing his attention --- something to investigate and fawn over.  âNot just the conception, but the implementation. Can you imagine what this would do with Earth tech? Itâd revolutionize ---- everything!â
@skyguarded | liked ( x )
Itâs been years since theyâve found themselves here again ; itâs almost funny, in a sardonic sort of way, if he juxtaposes them and now. What had once been bright eyes, bright futures, emanating from them had been worn away into wariness --- weariness --- clinging as a fog. Luck that theyâd made it so far, but dread that they can only go so much further. Still, Earth fares no better ; this heâs learned through meetings, through talking, and through their surroundings. Through the battle whose dust is only beginning to settle.
âI still canât believe youâre alive.â Itâs said blankly, just is, just a statement of fact, but heâs going to blink the other --- as if somehow still this canât be so ( but it is ).  âYou havenât been seen since ------ Do you know how unlikely it is that you wouldnât been alive this time, too? Infinitesimal. Impossible. But ------ Maybe I was looking at this wrong.                        Maybe the constant has something to do with you.â
blazeroughtâ:
â I wasnât gonna DOUBT YOU. â Eyes rolled, Keith giving Matt an unamused glance before his attention was back to being focused on the task at hand and watching the perimeter.
â Youâre A HOLT and maybe I donât know you or your parents as well as I know Pidge but I trust her and I trust that she trustâs YOU and Shiro always had good things to say about your family. Plus⌠itâs not like Iâd know how to work somethinâ like that. Iâm not a tech guy, so youâre kind of the only hope here regardless. â
âWell ---- thatâs good to know!â Heâs unperturbed, choosing instead to take this as an opportunity to shrug and return to his work with a contrasting upturn tracing his lips. Mattâs nearly done, nigh upon success, and it feels as though his breathâs suspended upon itâs completion ; still, itâs not to hinder something of a chuckle, of a response borrowing a bit of that air. âI canât tell if youâre suggesting that my reputation precedes me or that Iâm the Obi Wan to your Leia, but honestly I donât think Iâd be disappointed with either.â

mattâs biggest motivator in the time between galra capture and reuniting with pidge is his family: 1) in that their dad is still out there somewhere, and they need to find him; and 2) in that doing whatever he can to help keep zarkon and the galra empire as far away from earth as possible is more important than making it home. a galra empire away from earth means a galra empire away from pidge and their mom.
i guess a quick thought dump that iâll just end up adding on to for matt ---- at least for tonight. under a read more because itâll end up long.
he can be the living embodiment of a shitpost at times, but it gives him a sense of normalcy? and a sense that not every fiber of their existences have to be centered around the intergalactic war and the galra? i guess itâs him giving him a sense of being himself and his own person.
he absolutely knows when to be serious, and heâs super resourceful, quick thinking, and field aware.
matt probably hasnât had a haircut ( or very few ) over the course of his time in space, looking at how much and just overall how his hairâs been growing out. he started pulling it back when it started to get in the way, though.
matt speaks italian.
matt would do anything for pidge, is super proud of her, and would go to the ends of the universe to make sure sheâs safe and happy.
throughout the garrison and the kerberos mission matt wasnât much of a fighter ; he was the researcher, and that was that. he probably had some basic training at the very least, but all the training in the world canât prepare you for having to actually do something --- not at first at least.
that being said, heâs definitely had to learn how to defend himself to actually fighting since escaping galra capture. itâs kind of necessary. his preference falls something like polearm -> firearm -> hand-to-hand
heâs quick to become infatuated with someone. heâll claim heâs slow to get to know someone, but thatâs largely because he has a high bar in whatâs considered getting to know someone.
he wears his emotions on his sleeve. heâs learned to do it more since kerberos and escape and the rebels, but heâs still pretty open.
matt loves to learn and will try to learn everything from everyone, and heâs more than happy to be a resource/ reference.
matt is very definitely the person who fights for kindness, happiness, love, and all thatt. and to keep things that have happened to him and others from happening to more people.
matt is absolutely an animal person.
