it’s my birthdayyyyyyy!!!!! ahhhhh

there are friendships that feel steady until you notice how often you are the one adjusting the light. i used to measure my voice before i let it out, soften it, sand it down, make sure it would not echo too loudly against someone else’s walls. somehow i was always the one asked to recalibrate, to reconsider, to reshape. it is strange how silence can arrive like a lesson, how absence can lean heavy without saying a word. i used to rush to fill it, to smooth it over, to make sure nothing cracked. lately i have let it sit. not as punishment, not as pride, but as a quiet boundary. i still care. i am simply no longer folding myself smaller to prove it.
