It seems like she was at least interested in conversing with her, so she couldnât be too mad.
âI guess I havenât been having the best day, but itâs not usually this bad.â Although almost quitting on her first day as admiral was pretty much worse than this.
So she wasnât just stupid and clumsy. Hiyori took this fact in with a blank expression, frown so thin it might as well have been invisible.
She was still annoyed.
âMaybe you should just go home.
âOr get a good luck charm. You really need it.â
âY-yes maâam.â And she would go do it, spend what meager amount of money she had left to bring her a can of soda.
And with the tribute handed over, Hiyori would stare at the strange girl critically -- almost like she was weighing the options of throwing it right back in her face.
She doesnât. Sheâs feeling merciful.
âAre you always dumb and clumsy?â
âOr does today just suck for you?â
âW-wait? How is it that I owe you a soda now?â
âYou just ruined my dress. Are you stupid or something?â
âI said right now.â

âH-hey I understand that I spilled my drink on you but could you stop staring at me like I should just die?â
â...â
âNapkins. A soda. Now. Or Iâll scream.â

Heâs staring at the fish in the tank so hard he might as well be frozen. She watches him for a couple moments, bored enough by everything else going on, but something about his face...Â
Is kinda annoying.
She moves to stand next to him and crosses her arms.
'I donât think you can marry fish.â

Happy Birthday HIYORIÂ ! â„
File:010//So Many Cats | +Hiyori
While Hiyori battled the waves of animals in the house, he took his usual role as the quiet observer. Now that he wasnât entirely focused on the cat whom, now that it had sauntered off with its peers, seemed more interested in resuming that nap than in the attention of the partygoers, he could give another look to the room as a whole.
A couple of members of the Dan had swapped places, trying to keep enough of the animals happy at once to prevent the party from getting (even more) out of hand. Most were resigned to the sudden increase in population and deciding to just enjoy all their many-legged friends for as long as they were around.
Purposefully, in contrast to the rest of the room, Hiyori made her way there and back, placing Tono in his care as soon as the last of the disgruntled animals had returned to a less agitated state. Before he could do much with the bunny, though, Hiyori was on the move again - this time indicating that she should follow and join her on the recently vacated couch.
He did so, heedful of her guidance about how to handle Tono. Bringing the two of them as close to eye-level as was possible for one average-sized rabbit and one taller android, he spent a little while simply staring at her without a word. Naturally, she didnât break the quiet. Though, if she could, the mostly disinterested way in which she sat peaceably in his lap suggested that she likely wouldnât.
Heâd never seen her up-close before and, as the first rabbit heâd met, his interest was a little like a child finally being allowed to look at pets for adoption after asking their parents for long enough that the excitement had built up. Gingerly - remembering Hiyoriâs mention of softness - he found that Tono was much softer than the cat he had pet earlier, if one could believe that things could be so soft.
Hiyoriâs question, then, was met with an almost astonished look from the white-haired boy. âSheâs soft⊠and cute. Both.â A little nod punctuated his words, before his thoughts changed to a different, but related topic. âYouâve pet Tono too, right?â One would probably assumed from her phrasing of the question that she had, but Konoha wanted to be sure. Trying not to disturb the rabbit too much, he offered to transfer Tono to her, if she wanted to experience all that fluffy goodness.
They agreed on something.
It was such an unusual change from how Hiyori normally acted: with Konohaâs admission that Tono was cute, the girl positively lit up, excitement thrumming in her veins as her eyes widened. She didnât gasp, but she came pretty close -- and the smile that took over her expression was nearly blinding, bright and lively and everything a girl like her should be.
This was special.
Konoha was special.
â... not yet,â the girl said, some of the usual assertiveness in her voice lost as Konoha made his offer. The bunny once again changed hands, soft and pliable, and -- for a second, their fingers brushed.Â
Hiyori bit her tongue to keep from screaming.
âY-yeah! Tonoâs super soft, right? E... even though Shintaro-ojii-chan ignores her all the time, sheâs really nice.â Too loud for her own ears, she suddenly began to ramble, drawing the rabbit towards herself. Her eyes felt glued to the poor thing, and though the entire point was for her to pet her, she couldnât move a muscle. She was still in shock. âI never got to ask -- but -- I-I think Momo-chan must take care of her! Thatâs the only explanation, right? You think so too, right?â
It didnât matter if Konoha agreed, really. The brief nervousness that struck her slowly washed away, leaving unbelievable happiness in its wake. Konoha hadnât even done anything... and yet...
This was seriously the best day ever. She couldnât believe it.
â... Konoha-san,â she muttered next, finally mustering the courage to look at him from the corner of her eye. He was the same as always... and that was what made him so perfect. âYouâll -- someday, youâll get to pet a million rabbits. And a billion cats. And a trillion other animals. No matter what!
âIâll make it happen.â
It was all a little dramatic for the promise of future animal interactions, and yet -- it was most Hiyori could do. She meant what she said and more: sheâd make sure nothing stood in his way. He was too kind and too shy to get the things he wanted himself, which was why sheâd champion whatever cause he had. Sheâd be there for him. No matter what.
... so itâd begin with animals. You had to start small.
âSo donât worry about it. Okay?â
march 3rd, 2015                the sweetest glare. happy birthday, hiyori asahina! [ 2/3 ]
âH-How do Iââ
Itâs like knives are cutting into him. Hiyoriâs words are barbed spikes, made to create unpleasant wounds that twist and burrow and donât quite heal properly. Itâs too much for his fragile confidence and he just follows her in defeat.
(He wonders if the restaurant is upset about their soda fountain. Itâs too late, now.)
Shintaro has a bad feeling in the pit of his wallet but he complies with her wishes as most everyone does, casting her a grumpy look before entering the store.
âWhatâs your plan, then?â
Whatâs her plan?
First step is looking at Shintaro like heâs stupid, rolling her eyes and crossing her arms. Shuuya had called him the âresident genius,â at one point -- but thatâs clearly not true.
âHave you even ever gone shopping?â she tells him, giving him a well-deserved kick to the shoe that says âmush.â She leads him forward into the unknown, and the moment they hit the clothing racks, she starts pulling things out. Suit jackets, graphic tees, and inexplicably, a shirt that says âSuperstar (Rawr)â all get foisted on the annoying NEET.
âYou can pick something too, you know,â she reminds him, and in the same breath, turning away --
âItâs your funeral.â

Sheenaâs lips turned in a frown. What in Efreet did that mean? She didnât have to lie? It sounded like Hiyori may be stuck in a situation where she had to do just that. Or was she afraid of the consequences? So far, Sheena saw that Hiyori seemed too blunt to act âfakeâ in any way.Â
If she was more perceptive or up-front, Sheena may have questioned Hiyori further about what she meant. Instead, she glanced from the girlâs half-eaten cake and then down the last bite of her chocolate mousse. Would she look like a pig if she ate that remaining bite instead of leaving it? âŠOh, who cares. Sheena put that last spoonful of mousse in her mouth. She ran around this city for three hours trying to figure out where she was, she was allowed to indulge.Â
Though she was unable to focus on savoring the chocolate flavor, caught a little off-guard by the other girlâs words. Scam people? Sheena may have done some horrible thingsâlike volunteered to be an assassinâbut cheating peo-Â
Her eyes widened as she realized it and looked at the desserts Hiyori nodded to. Lie to get things for freeâŠ. Sheena reddened. She forgot; this entire thing was paid for because of a trick. And she just accepted. Clearly, she didnât have the higher ground or even try to argue with Hiyoriâs point. The spoon was set down with a small clatter and Sheena kept her thoughts to herself about Hiyoriâs suggestionâunable to condemn or approve.Â
âOh, yes. Thank you,â Sheena replied, noticing Hiyori watching her. She scooted back her own chair and stood, brushing down the wrinkled edges of her top. âI believe so. But are you alright, too, like for when you go home later? Do you live with any⊠adults?â Not that Hiyori appeared to need any adult supervisionâher apparent maturity was proof of that. Still, Sheena wasnât comfortable with a kid being by herself, especially in this city.Â
Having the question turned around on her was -- from the look on Hiyoriâs face, it was pretty confusing. She narrowed her eyes, and she had half a mind to say what the woman was already thinking: sheâd be fine on her own, thanks. But... Sheena had been nice to her, and misplaced concern wasnât the worst thing that had happened to her here.
The girl looked away, scuffed her sandal against the floor.
âI live with my family,â she said simply, and that almost seemed like the end of that... but in a rare moment of talkativeness, she elaborated. âIâm the sensible one, you know. My nephews are really dumb. I dunno where theyâd be without me.â She wore this admission as a badge of pride, crossing her arms and giving a smug little hmph. But it made her point: no, she didnât live with adults, but that didnât matter. She was one of the only people who could really hold the fort down.
Compared to being there, getting home was a piece of cake.
âWe should try this again sometime.â Now, Hiyoriâs smile softened; she met Sheenaâs gaze head-on, wearing a look that was finally fitting for someone like her. Open, friendly. Not the rude, self-centred little girl sheâd turned out to be. âFor fun. I like you.â
And so she moved in, closing the distance between them. It was fast, it was abrupt, and in the end, it was nothing at all -- she was just offering her hand for the woman to shake. Sheena was pretty. Sheena was nice. Sheena was a little too honest for her, the type of woman who had idealistic principles, but she was decent and stood up for herself. There werenât many people like that.
She wasnât annoying. And that, for Hiyori, was an amazing achievement.
âNext timeâs on you though, okay?â
