Walking into the Anthem I was completely blown away by the new venue on the water front here in Washington D. C.  There were seated balcony seats surrounding the stage with a huge general admission standing section down below.  Plenty of bars made for grabbing food and drink very quick and even though the venue is not the biggest in town, it certainly sets itself apart and only makes sense as to why numerous popular acts are coming to perform here at the Anthem.

The Night Sweats came out to the stage dressed in their signature style dungarees outfits like the ones used in the S.O.B. music video displaying this outlaw mentality of the group.  Rateliff has the special ability of having a powerful voice that carries extremely well into his life performances which can be a rarity sometimes when listening to bands perform live compared to listening to the album.  

When they started playing “I Need Never Get Old” it was euphoric with the crowd clapping along the entire song and you could tell the band was feeding off the energy of the audience which carried on through the rest of the set.  Eventually the band would do a cover of “Atlantic City” by Bruce Springsteen as encore who is clearly an inspiration to Rateliff and his style of music.

The new album leans more towards the R&B side musically of the 60’s and 70s with its use of organ sounds that make for an old school soul record.  There is a lot of pain in this new album and its no surprise as Rateliff is coming off a divorce from a relationship of 11 years.  The new record is about a relationship falling apart and being able to still finding a way to continue to move forward.  So by closing the show with the title track from the new album “Tearing at the Seams,” it seemed very fitting with the show being very high energy throughout, to finish the concert on a slow expressive track.  Rateliff is more than deserving to see live at he and the rest of the Night Sweats leave everything on stage in their performance. It is certainly a show you do not want to miss if given the opportunity.
