I'm being a little nitpicky here, but this is not entirely true!
KOSA will not remove Discord, Ao3, c.ai, etc., but rather censor it. This is an important distinction.
This isn't going worldwide, but it could. However, as of now, it's not the most pressing of notions.
You do not yet have to give your government id exclusively. Rather, if that specific version of KOSA (put simply) is passed, you would have to provide some sort of confirmation that you are above the age of 13, which could come in the form of a government id.
Thank you for this warning, though! This is true and horrifying. If this bill is passed, not only would it be harmful to queer kids, it would facilitate even more information digging by social media apps, porn websites, etc. than now.
Because KOSA’s chief focus is not to protect young people’s privacy. The bill’s main aim is to censor a broad swath of speech in response to concerns that young people are spending too much time on social media, and too often encountering harmful content.
Put simply, the bill mandates content censorship on various platforms, affecting everything from major social media sites (Reddit, Twitter, TikTok, Facebook, etc.) to web browsers (Firefox, Google, DuckDuckGo, etc.) and messaging apps (iMessage, Discord, Whatsapp, etc.), all of which provide wildly different services and have wildly different audiences.
The vague standards set by KOSA would make it challenging for platforms to differentiate harmful content from necessary information, thus limiting access to medical, mental health, and potentially life-saving resources for both adults and children.
Moreover, KOSA would incentivize implementing an elaborate age-verification system, leading to potential privacy invasions and undermining parents' ability to make decisions for their own children online -- not to mention the dangerous ignorance towards the many whose parent's supervision could be harmful rather than helpful (including queer, neurodivergent, etc. children.)
This article goes a lot more in depth, providing examples and hard evidence. I really recommend y'all check it out. I promise you will not regret it.
Thank you for the post! Really appreciate it (genuinely.) This act is extremely harmful, and yet has portrays such an innocent image, it's scary. We need to spread the word as far and wide as we can.
