     “It’s-a… a…”

He’s cut off by a hearty sigh erupting from the depths of his chest, and all he can do is ride it out, stifling it within his hand and stretching the rest of his body. As soon as said yawn plays out, he shakes the fuzzy feeling of sleep from his head and returns his gaze to the princess, that same smile spreading across his face once more.

     “It’s-a no problem, Princess,” he finally finishes. He was just about ready to turn in and return into the house with whom he assumed would become his house guest for the hour, but at the sound of her invitation proposal and the sight of the picnic basket coming out from behind her back, the smile playing on Mario’s face transforms into an absolute beaming grin. “Watch-a the sunrise? I– I’d-a love to!”

“Wonderful!” Peach beamed brightly, clasping her hands together around the handle of her pink, frilly picnic basket.

                                    Thump. Thump. Click! Squeeeeeeeeak…

     “Helloooo…?”

The door slowly opens to the sight of a rather sleepy-looking plumber, clad in his pajamas. It was so early in the morning, and of everybody he expected to hear knocking at his door at such a early hour (–the mailman, perhaps?), he hadn’t expected he’d be opening the door to the princess any day soon. He’s taken aback, forced out of his sleepy stupor, and he fumbles.

     “Wah! Puh– pr- Princess-a!”

The door swings open and Mario steps aside, lips curling into a smile, as if inviting her in. Clearly she had plans to enter if she came around to his residence so early, right? Or was he simply assuming?

     “What-a can I– ah-, what are-a you doing here?”

“Oh, I’m sorry for waking you, Mario. I know it’s so early.”

It’s still dark outside, the doorway and the Princess lit only by a nearby light and the light coming from inside Mario’s house. She hopes he isn’t too upset about being woken up, but she’d had such a good feeling about this morning that she couldn’t ignore it.

Peach doesn’t enter as expected, instead revealing a picnic basket from behind her back.
