Open Starter: And Her Pearl
Pink clutched the vial containing the orange pearl tightly, holding it near her body as she paced in her room. There was no object on Homeworld that she could use to open it, despite how hard she tried. However, maybe there was something in this âBeach Cityâ that humans and gems alike had a tendency to inhabit. A hopeful spark in her eyes was there and gone in a flash, but her mind was set. She was going to talk to everyone in this city if that was what it took.
She put a beanie over her gem; though she was slowly becoming better at accepting the fact that she was definitely a gem, sometimes she still struggled with the idea. It wasnât like she was really hiding anything; most people could tell she was either not human or severely sunburnt. She was still comforted knowing that she looked somewhat human.
After looking at herself and the vial one last time, she headed out into the sunny day. The beaming light put a spring in her formerly hesitant step. Humming to herself, she curiously poked her head into every nearby building she could find. None of the humans seemed to have tools that were powerful enough for the exceptionally strong vial, but she continued to look. This was getting to be frustrating, even as she told herself it would be worth it if she could open the vial.Â
( @rainbow-2point0h we could use this if itâs alright??)
âWatcha got thereâ said the fusion âis it important?â
Pink Avengurine looked at the vial. âItâs very importantâŠâ She paused for a moment, then quickly added, âTo me, at least.â
âwhatâs in it!â he asks, tilting his head
âWell.â She raised the vial for him to see, the pearl inside shifting to the bottom with a soft clink.Â
âOh goodness!â He flinched away âwhat happened to them!?â
âItâs a long story. I shouldnât have gotten involved with this gem, but I am now.â
She looked down.
âYou can tell meâ he said with a tender voice âif youâd like, that isâ
Rainbowâs tone was enough to persuade her. After all, it had been years since sheâd had somebody to really talk to, and this gem seemed to be friendly. âTo be entirely honest,â she shuddered, âI put her here when I was on Homeworld.â Her eyes closed. She liked to think what happened wasnât her fault, and introspection was never easy for her.
He placed a hand over his mouth âWhy would you do that?â
âIt sounds awful, I know it does. Please hear me out. She continuously goofed off and broke rules, and I was constantly afraid sheâd be punished. I figured if she couldnât do that, at least until we were in spaceâŠSheâd be fine.â It sounded like a ridiculous idea to her when she said it aloud.
âwell that wonât do! you have to free herâ he said, waving his arms around frantically
Her face reddened. âWhat do you think Iâm trying to do? It wonât open, it wonât break, nothing Iâve tried has worked. It sure looks like a fragile container, but it isnât.â
he takes a closer look âwhat is it made out of?â
âI canât tell.â It was transparent, made from only a thin layer of material with the exception of two caps on either end, but it didnât make any noise as she tapped it.
âI might be able to figure it out⊠But youâd have to follow meâ he took a pause âIâm a long way from homeâ
âIâm willing to go however far we need to go.â She looked determined.
âFantastic!!â He beamed â Lets get to it!â He said as he grabbed her hand and rushed off
The vial was still tight in her other hand, and she smiled. âYeah, letâs.â
he opens up his umbrella and tells her to hold onto his waist
then FWOOM! in a gust of sparkles he sends both of you flying into the air
She gasped, stunned, and looked down. Her eyes focused on the ground as it became distant.
he flew until he reached a pair of trian-tracks
As they arrived, she giggled to herself. It had been a while since sheâd flown, and she wasnât sure she had even flown like that.Â
âokay! now then, weâll have to catch the trainâ he closes his umbrella âbut for now we can just follow the train-tracksâ he smiled
âOh, right.â She remembered what she was doing, and proceeded along the tracks.Â
rainbow balanced on the side of the tracks as if hr were a tightrope walker
âsooooo, what brings you to earth?â
She shrugged. âI was coming here to study the planet, but that plan fell through after I got delayed. A lot happened here that presumably nobody was expecting. Itâs a busy planet.âÂ
âHmmâ he listened as he nodded along âdo you miss home world?â
âNot really. There wasnât much to do.â She looked towards the sky. âOur purposes were all we had, but at times, it felt like we didnât even have that.â
âWell, now you have me!!â He twirled enthusiastically as the tracks started to rumble
Pink Aventurine giggled, her voice audible this time. âYouâre not wrong.â Her steps were lighter and more relaxed, though she moved at the same pace.Â
the tracks rumble more vigorously âoop! thatâs out cue!â he pushes her away from the tracks as a train rushes past
âhop on!!â
âWha- Okay!â She quickly scampered into an opening in the train.
he followed close behind, watching the world go by as the train went forward
âso.. do you like it here? on earth I mean-â
She thought about her answer for a moment. âEarthâŠ..is not as intricate as I had hoped, in some ways. The system of careers and way time is spent during the day is less than efficient. But, even though Earth could afford to fix a lot, itâs beautiful. Iâve grown to like most humans.â
he swayed his feet âthatâs niceâ he smiles âdo you have a home here?â
âI do, technically, but I move around.â She pulled her hat down out of habit.Â
âhmm, whyâs that?â he looks over âif you donât mind me askingâ
She looked back at him. âEverything on this planet is temporary. Thereâs something I find comforting about being able to totally reinvent myself as many times as I want, especially since Iâm not entirely sure who I want to be.â Her gaze moved to the ground.
âwell, welcome to earthâ he smiled at her and then looked at the skyline âitâs such a beautiful place
âYep.â She hummed to herself, tapping the vial.
âsoâ he looks at the vail âdo you know what that thing was for?â
âI have some sort of an idea. Most of the containers like this that I found already had gems inside, so I assumed they were for storage. I saw them get picked up and taken out of the room, and they always came back empty.â Her hand moved to her gem. âI wasnât sure what opened them, but clearly they were able to be accessed somehow.âÂ
âhmm, how curiousâŠâ he looked up âdid you see what kind of gems were opening them?â
âI didnât see anyone specifically opening them, but it was mostly quartzes and sapphires that handled them.â
he mumbles to himself âyeah I mightâŠâ he trails off
She stared at him. âYou might?â
âhm? oh!â he turns to you fully âI might know a gem who works with sort of stuff!â he smiles as the train bumps around
Pink Aventurine gasped, her eyes lighting up. âWait, really?âÂ
he smiles âyeah! I know a bismuth who used to work with this kind of stuff!â
he took a pause to steady himself as the train shook âat least I think she didâ
The vial nearly slipped from her hands. âOh my stars. That would mean everything to me.â She tried to sound casual about it, but there was obvious and undeniable excitement in her face.
he smiled then looked away âso, what were you doing before I found you?â
âI was just talking about this vial to everyone I could find. Iâve had a lot of free time lately, due toâŠ.well, itâs human stuff.â She fidgeted with her hat.Â
âhuman stuff? I love human stuff!!â he beams âI mean, I am Ÿths humanâ
âWell, this wasnât really fun human stuff. My old human friends went to college, and I went with them just because. After we graduated, though, we went in different directions and never saw each other again. But this was only aboutâŠa decade ago.â She shrugged. âI donât even have a real human âjobâ.â
He thinks, mumbling to himself softly âmaybe⊠we can do some fun stuff when we get to my part of townâ he smiles
âReally?â Nobody she had known was this unconditionally caring at first, even though humans were usually way friendlier than gems. It made her wary, but she supposed she should give him a chance. âIâd like that.âÂ
âCool!â He beamed, then turned back to the open scenery. âJust a few more hours and weâll be homeâ he muttered, but mostly to himself. âSo did you ever do anything for fun?â
âWell, of course! IâŠâ Nothing came to mind. She had done plenty of things that she considered important or meaningful, but she couldnât remember a time where she did things specifically for fun. ââŠYeah, I did,â she lied halfheartedly. Â
âlike what?â he smiled at her
âIâŠused to write about the Earth.â Technically, it was true. It was obvious from her tone that it wasnât particularly exciting to her, but there was a time when she did write frequently.
âhmmm, but was it fun?â he tilts his head at her, the tone in her voice already kind of giving him an answer
âHonestly?â She sighed. âNot really.â
âoh dear, well that wonât do!â he grabs her hand âi promise when we make it to beach city, weâll have lots of fun!!â
She looked down at their hands, smiling faintly. ââŠThanks. Iâd love that.â
âokay love! itâs time for us to hop offâ
without giving her time to thing he jumps out of the train kart
It seemed that as soon as she blinked, he had vanished. âHuh-? Hey, wait up!â She hopped off the train and ran after him.

âlike what?â he smiled at her
âI...used to write about the Earth.â Technically, it was true. It was obvious from her tone that it wasnât particularly exciting to her, but there was a time when she did write frequently.
But this was only about...a decade ago.â She shrugged. âI donât even have a real human âjobâ.â
Pink Aventurine giggled, her voice audible this time. âYouâre not wrong.â Her steps were lighter and more relaxed, though she moved at the same pace.Â
the tracks rumble more vigorously âoop! thatâs out cue!â he pushes her away from the tracks as a train rushes past

he swayed his feet âthatâs niceâ he smiles âdo you have a home here?â
âI do, technically, but I move around.â She pulled her hat down out of habit.Â
âhmm, whyâs that?â he looks over âif you donât mind me askingâ
