There are so many Byler posts going around rn and I have always been a Byler truther since…gosh, maybe the second or third episode? I don’t remember when it was exactly but it was while Will was gone and Karen told Mike that she knew he was upset about Will being missing and basically said “I know Will is important to you and you feel so much about him. You are my son and I hope you know that you will always be my son and I will love you no matter what” because like…why did that part need to be said after talking about his feelings for Will. MMMM OKAY.
Anyways. I love Byler. I hope it IS endgame. However, that does not make me stop feeling sorry for Eleven. All the gifs where Mike looks like it physically pains him to say he still loves her, where he minutely brushes past her to acknowledge Will, where he stares at Will with that open expression and says words about caring for him easily when he stutters and is awkward saying the same things to El…
I support Byler and want it to be a thing. But my heart also aches for El who was, let’s face it, kind of a rebound for Mike. She loves him because he was the first one who showed her genuine kindness who didn’t (yet) betray her, the first one she met when she was lost and alone and scared, and the first one who made her feel like a girl instead of a science experiment. Of course she would love him, at least to some degree, never mind if it was healthy or not.
I want Byler to be a thing and there’s no guilt for Mike choosing Will, his true love, instead. But sometimes you need to think about the collateral damage along the way.
Honestly, I want Eleven to end the series single, figuring herself out, and maybe reuniting with Kali and having a grand adventure (with dad approval from Hopper because they both still need each other) and maybe Kali and her gang even come to hang in Hawkins for a while but just…I want Eleven to have her own happy ending, but I do still feel a pang of hurt for her with every Byler post where it’s shown how much more Mike loves Will over her.
Eleven is more than just a plot device to further the Byler love plot and I hope she gets the sort of ending she deserves.
