eric and dylan often frequented southwest plaza mall, including stores like hot topic, which eric described as a “trendy little thing.” it was probably the only place he could get his band t-shirts without relying on mail orders, like his kmfdm mail order.
eric spent his 18th birthday at the draft bar & grill, located near southwest plaza. he had a small birthday dinner there with dylan, nate dykeman, chris morris, nicole markham, and cory friesen.
later that night, eric went bowling. a rocky mountain news article from august 22, 1999 described how much he enjoyed rock n’ bowl:
“the amf bowling alley dimmed the lights and brought in a dj from midnight to 2 a.m. eric loved the disco lights and rowdy music and camaraderie he found at rock n’ bowl. he was there most friday nights. only this night, many of his pals had early-morning saturday plans. only two made it to the bowling alley, dylan and robyn. dylan wouldn’t let eric down, wouldn’t let him be all alone.”
in the video filmed on eric’s birthday, dylan and nate are shown inside a king soopers grocery store, possibly picking something up for him. in one of the basement tapes, filmed on april 11, eric refers to smoking his “birthday cigar”:
“[...] eric’s still driving. they’re stopped at a red light or stop sign on the east side of broadway. eric’s smoking a large cigar now which he says is his ‘birthday cigar’ [eric’s birthday was on the 9th].”
they hung around southwest plaza mall semi-frequently. this is noted in a thesis by someone who didn’t attend columbine high school but worked at the mall and recalled their experiences with both of them.
“i didn’t know eric harris, not in any consequential way. he and dylan klebold sometimes hung out at the southwest plaza mall, where i briefly worked as a survey taker when i was eighteen. the two of them would pace back and forth through the food court, those ridiculous trench coats billowing in the artificial breeze.”
“i didn’t particularly like eric, but we talked sometimes; we were mostly civil. eric and i played the same video games. we both liked industrial music. we had the same kmfdm t-shirt. he flirted in the impotent way young, inexperienced boys did that always made me anxious—all freckles and pink cheeks and skinny nervous fingers. my friends teased me about it, said the nazi boy wanted to fuck me.”
take this account with a grain of salt: the author misidentifies a zero day clip as involving eric and dylan, so their memory may be imperfect. it’s still useful for providing some context about how they were seen around the mall. https://dc.ewu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1492&context=theses
they also picked up some of the shirts they’re widely associated with at southwest plaza. there was a custom t‑shirt shop in the mall where you could design and print their own shirts, and many believe eric and dylan had their shirts made there. these included the shirts they wore on april 20th eric’s white “natural selection” shirt and dylan’s black “wrath” shirt. dylan’s favorite shirt was a dark green tee with white lettering that read “AOL: WheRe KewLz HaXORz ArE.” it was meant as a joke, referencing how easy it was to hack on AOL at the time.
fun tidbit: dylan was apparently banned from aol for using programs like aohell with zach heckler. they also experimented with a fake account generator, which could create fully functional new aol accounts that lasted for about a month. one of dylan’s internet handles that circulates in the community was “wurmhole” on aol. according to secondary sources, this was an account he used occasionally while experimenting with hacking tools, though there’s no official verification that it was exclusively his or used for anything beyond testing. zach heckler was also involved in some credit card scams and fraud; he was suspended for using a teacher’s credit card to buy porn, and police found other people’s credit card numbers on his computer.
