Muse lost.

It started with a twisting stab in the pit of his stomach, 

an ice pick through the soft flesh of his abdomen, twisting up and up and up, until he could feel it’s point prick the underside of his weak heart. He fell to his knees then, hands shooting out just in time to stop himself from banging his head against the hard wood floor. Cheek against the cool floor, he lay there pathetically, every inch of his body submerged in an unbearable numbness. His wrist vibrated, his watch beeping and blinking, but he could barely move a fingers to shut it off. He didn’t want to spend his last moments listening to Ion, but the gods never blessed him before and they were not going to start now.  Warning! Warning! Blood sugar low! 

There it was. The first sign. He was stupid--The only thing that could save him was in Zon, more than a hundred years forward from this timeline. If only he had the foresight to stock up on the nearly ten bottles of supplements that sustained the entire population. He was going to wither away just when 

he had found her. 

Lungs collapsing. 

He had met someone this far in the deteriorating process, but he couldn’t remember if they had survived--most likely not. Jae had never considered what it meant to...die. What it meant to realize that in ten minutes he’d be nothing more than a wheezing, pale lump of flesh that would melt into the carpet; a self defense protocol installed in the watch. Injected into the wrist, spread through the blood stream. Mush in thirty minutes, eaten by his dogs in ten.
