“I’m…” Her voice seemed to trail off as she tried to focus on walking with him to the chair but her face was enough for anyone to tell that she had had a rough day. “I’m fine, maybe.” Yuna normally wasn’t like this: her cheeks red, her shoes off and her hair in a slight mess. In her mind, she had to look perfect at all times but today, she didn’t care. The professor took the class of water and drank it all as if it was another class of liquor.
“My whole life my self-worth has been based on my knowledge. The more I knew, the further I could go and the better I could excel. But now, I’ve reached this amazing place that people much older than me have strived to be and I’m wondering if I’ve missed my life in the process. I’ve only been to maybe a few parties, I’ve never been clubbing, never dated, never been in love and to hear these girls closer to my age than most of the people around me are make fun of me for never having experienced anything besides a lab, a library and a book, discredits all of my hard work.”
Yuna could feel herself ready to cry but she kept telling herself not to. Not in front of Phineas. He knew her as this strong independant woman and now she was crumbling in front of him. “I worked so hard to graduate early and now I’m twenty-eight years old and I feel as if I have missed out on life but I foolishly spent my youth with my nose in a book and my head in the lab. I’ve had a more intimate relationship with someone’s brain than a partner. Normally, I would write this off but today, I just feel terrible. I don’t know what’s wrong with me, Phineas.”
Yuna’s definition of ‘fine’ appeared to be a completely different sentiment to Phineas’ as he watched her downing the glass of water. He was grateful, at least, that she was getting some liquid that wasn’t straight liquor into here system.
With his brows furrowed ever so slightly, he listened to the young woman’s concerns. It was true. She wasn’t a typical 20-something year old. In fact he had on occasion found it perplexing that she indeed wasn’t out there having fun but choosing instead to spend evenings with an old priest with a secret tiny drinking problem.
“You don’t seem the type of person to take the mockeries of others to heart.” He commented before she continued speaking. Concerned that her voice was crackling slightly in emotion, he leaned forward a bit and placed a reassuring hand on her forearm. “I don’t think it’s foolish at all. You have chosen an academic path, and while it isn’t for everybody - you have accomplished things that many people only dream of at such a young age. Not to mention, Yuna, you are still so very young.” He smiled at her with kind eyes. “You still have plenty of time to do all of those things if you wanted to. Plus, I feel like you’re forgetting somebody else in this very room who hasn’t experienced a lot of the things you’ve mentioned.”
