Pietà is an oil-on-canvas painting created by the Russian-born artist Oleg Supereco in 2008. Unlike traditional Renaissance sculptures or paintings that often show the Virgin Mary's full body cradling her son, Supereco uses a tight, intimate composition focusing on the faces of Mary and Jesus.
A soft light connects the two faces, both of which have their eyes closed. This choice highlights a spiritual union, suggesting that Mary joined in the suffering of the cross as Jesus did. The piece is often associated with the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, focusing on Mary’s intense mourning and suffering during her son's passion.
Art critics describe it as an "unusual take" on the traditional theme, replacing the monumental scale of classic works with a gentle, personal proximity.

Starting off my new art blog with this current WIP, taking inspiration in part from Pietas and Dutch artist, Eustache Le Sueur's painting, Meekness. A self portrait reflecting on my personal loss and overall pain in 2025, embodied by my deceased beautiful boy cat and reaching out to what support and hope I have for the future in my sweet baby girl cat. This is a personal and vulnerable tone to set for my art blog but it is forefront of my artistic mind right now. Other works will be whimsical and in other styles but this is only the beginning 🖤
