Different anon, but same hate for how Maria was treated in Movie3. They try to make it sympathetic for the old general guy by saying 'Don't worry, I was the good guy military man who saved Maria from a gunshot.' When the whole darkness of Maria's death, aside from the whole dramatic irony of her being the one to save the one who was supposed to save her, was that it wasn't treated as some regretted thing by G.U.N. They point blank shot an ill girl with no remorse or hesitation to put even more oomph into the anti-government theme that's so prevalent in Adventure 2. The same illness they decided to cut out entirely, which feels a bit ableist.
Instead of being reminded by Amy and Rouge of Maria that leads to the emotional scene where he sheds a tear and when he saves Rouge, Shadow just decides to do good after a talk on the moon with Sonic. Instead of the tragic siblings that they are, they just made Maria as Shadow's emotional support white girl that died because Gerald took her to a government facility for literally no reason. It downplays every aspect of Adventure 2 took that was seen as risky and mature while still trying to have its cake and eat it. Stobotnik is always good though I agree, waiter more Stobotnik please.

i just knew from the beginning this was going to be one epic pile of misogyny when it was said rouge wasnt gonna be in it. we cant have THAT in our movie, we gotta give the old man who was dead in the game 100 scenes instead.
still highkey disappointed by Sonic 3 the movie to this day even as I pirated it. getting rid of all the dark and heavy meaningful themes like government conspiracies being resulted in deaths of innocents from SA2 while also just replacing one of the core characters that haunts SA2 throughout and isn't treated at all with humor to just Eggman 2 were all so just lame
I wouldve forgiven all that tho bc its a kids movie IF and ONLY IF they had just casted someone DECENT as Shadow because my god. Absolutely awful. Awful performance by israel prime minster's pal keanu reeves. It's the embodiment of those lame ass fancasts that have dwayne johnson as Knuckles or tom holland as Tails or even awkwafina as Amy. He sounds bad in such an overwhelming way. He delivers NOTHING and actively drags the whole movie down holy shit he is seriously bad in an already mediocre take on Shadow's character in SA2. And so many rush to the defense of the movie by saying "but it's not SA2 it's a different story!" when it's taking nearly every plot beat from SA2 and making it worse.

how did you read my mind that well?? because i am a sonic movie. ahem. disliker. to put it nicely. my favourite part in these movies was when the slotslights guy with the blender appeared. thats when i start clapping and cheering! dare i say these movies are sonic for people who used to bully autistic kids in school for being too invested in sonic lore but now in the 2020s claim to have always been big fans? more under the cut
just because sonic was changed to look more pleasant in the first movie still doesnt mean it isnt a very average corposlop popular childrens media character movie. its literally the live action smurfs or alvin and the chipmunks movie but with sonic, nothing else to say about this. my greatest gripe is: you know how sonics thing is protecting animals right? why couldnt maddie, a VET, have been the main human sonic interacts with? they share the same interest! why the boring cop man? oh but waaaait, i know exactly why. tails should've been with sonic in this movie from the very beginning to give it at least something… more.
second one was okay i suppose i dunno i gotta remember things again.
but man do a lot of things about the third one irk me. gerald is merely an archetypal "haha look grampa is deranged while doing stereotypical grampa things" character. cue excruciating 80 hours of a scene where the joke is that the old mans still got moves! gameverse gerald is a dozen times more eerie in the sense that he does not come off as outright sinister at first. see how shadow looks a little uncomfortable seeing gerald again in sonadow generations, despite gerald being entirely sane. THAT tiny bit of animation given to shadow had a bigger effect on me than anything that happened in the movie.
i felt nothing at maria's death scene. sure, i understand changing her death to an explosion rather than a gunshot, but couldn't she still have given her iconic speech somehow, then dying in an explosion or whatever? her just going poof is so. nothing. i dunno, if im perfectly honest, actually i wouldve simply wanted sa2 in a movie form with little changes (stobotnik yaoi is an acceptable extra though). like that wouldve been perfectly fiiiiiiineeeeee would anyone REALLY complain about that!! or yknow, just play sa2 instead.
get ready for girlboss amy who rolls her eyes at how boys are so silly and then cop dad has to give sonic the birds and the bees talk and it will be so FUNNY cause its awkwarjshdfjshfsjvnmcx
but here are some things i liked: agent stone. his relationship with robotnik is actually some pretty compelling wacky villain yaoi, which is crazy. he is the one guy i would allow to appear in gameverse as well. the idea behind longclaw's character was fine to me as well, as her being an owl is an impressive deep cut reference to the labyrinth zone. i wouldve given her the design on the bottom left of this though!
yes sonaze is one of the most compelling relationships in sonic to me and i love it, no i would never hetslop them into a damn traditional nuclear family when they grow up 💀 they are NOT getting married and thats precisely what gives this ship ACTUAL SAUCE!!! in fact, i love the partially doomed aspect of it all, not gonna lie <3
also i cannot stand when the one m/f ship i happen to like gets injected with what i like to call adam sandler gender roles in fandom. sonic is not the heehehoo bumbling goofy guy to blaze's "sensible girlboss woman who rolls her eyes at goofy man", canonically sometimes its BLAZE whos the brash dumbass!! and thats far more interesting yknow?

i didnt play the older games, bubsy was just too evil looking to me. looking at bubsy 4d i feel simultaneously mad yet very impressed. maybe i am a huge fan of the concept of taking an admittedly unlikable guy with an admittely poor design and redeeming him by having him grow to be a middle aged fail uncle who didnt want to give up on his dreams after all. with a bunch of youngins to (lovingly) poke fun at him. and would you look at that, the furries' lustful needs have been sated? (dont look at me im still not going to draw him like that though)
the trailer gives off a bit of a bad first impression by leaning too much into the "lol look were being ironic look!!!" stuff, but fabraz has reassured many times this is not going to be just irony slop, and thats a big relief to me. bubsys line about alien bdsm is so fucking out of nowhere that it just might be funny as hell. is this seriously going to be making me look into BUBSY LORE? lmfao
although bubsy has taken great amounts of accountability for his former deeply sinister crimes, i still need to see him die in various brutally cartoonish ways in this game. see crash bandicoot's die-o-ramas. the animations at the moment look a little wonky, and this kind of cartoon guy is going to require a LOT to look good...

thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk about scrimblo bimblos! ^_^ i really want to draw all the thoughts marinating in my head about many of them, once im not so weirdly parasocially invested in gaster undertale for some reason. for now, i will talk about the more well known stuff but who knows what sort of deep dive into the greatest obscurity i will pull off one day. heres your exhaustive list under the cut, not in particular order!
psychonauts - these are THE most video games ever made to me. just the most ideal formula for a cartoonish platformer; creative concept, beautiful art that really revived my art skills, intriguing characters chock full of lore to each one of them and storytelling that balances between hilarious and deep. im genuinely baffled that this series still isnt at least as popular as all those lore-heavy 2010s cartoons you tumblrinas love so much, as its so character-driven. note that psychonauts 1 is somewhat outdated in some aspects (still hilarious though, perfect stuff for someone who was an invader zim teenager like me), 2 addresses topics regarding mental health with much more care. and im just soooo grateful they GOT to finish the sequel!! PLEASEEE play or watch this IMMEDIATELY!!
klonoa - this was actually a very recent discovery for me. truly shocking, i know. somehow despite my brother always getting his hands on what i swear was every single ps1/2 game ever made, SOMEHOW we missed out on this. aesthetically its the MOST mecore!! i sure as hell wasnt expecting that blue orb to be a #problematic character in the ending of the first game lmao. klonoas fate is so tragic, hes so much stronger than me jfc i would just die probably. but truly, i find the worlds and character designs of these games really fascinating. now i understand why its fans are so insane about getting new crumbs every 2000 years..
sonic - i mean yeah???? its fucking. sonic??? all my 100000 opinions on sonic games are going to require their own post though.
spyro - so this was my first hyperfixation when i was literally only like 4 years old. i had literally never seen a character as cute as spyro was and that changed my brain chemistry forever. at this age i was ALREADY creating some kind of AUs and OCs taking place in the spyro universe. drawings of spyro going shopping for groceries at my local siwa. i kept on talking about my epic spyro OCs in kindergarten. only now i realize not a single kid probably understood a damn thing i said oops lol..
anyway yes, spyro games were really gorgeous to look at back then and still are. a lesson in how graphics arent everything: its the way you stylize them. as i got older, legend of spyro and many deviantart fancomics happened. of course i had a crush on cynder. i dont remember if these games were particularly amazing, but i did and still do appreciate the oooo dramatic cinematic-ness of them if nothing else, even if somewhat corny. spyro just had the personality of unseasoned chicken in them if i remember correctly, which was disapponting.
rayman - youd be surprised if you knew how much lore this french fuck actually holds in him. however, there is a problem: rayman is an ubisoft creation. and ubisoft has not been able to make up their minds about the worldbuilding of rayman games at all, which becomes really frustrating once you find yourself getting way too into that LMAO. especially because rayman has a lot of cool character designs in it and beautiful surreal fantasy worlds. plus all of current ubisofts general evilness… woo hoo…
raymans limblessness is something that really makes him unique and absolutely cool as fuck. the opportunities taken with that are endless. if i were to make a rayman 4, i would totally take on the opportunity to take elements from all the past games and combine all this to one hell of a 3d platforming package. though all of that is gonna definitely require its own post hahaha. do give the 3d platformers in the series a try because rayman is awesome to play as! although i have to warn that some elements are painfully 2000s in rayman 3. like why is this character out of nowhere making a bad dick joke? right in front of this beautifully rendered fantasy world with beautiful music? why are french people like this
ratchet and clank - another big fixation of little me. i would play through these games like an absolute unhinged beast, even though i didnt understand english at that time enough to understand ratchet and clanks constant insane bitching at each other and that the first games story is basically baby's first anti-capitalism. not to be an annoying zillennial but kids these days dont understand how absolutely mindblowing it was to explore the worlds in these games. id be like whoooaaahhh how is all THIS inside my crt television!! im currently thinking of playing through the first three ones again, so i will get back to you on whether or not i think the story and characters are fun. still a ton of fun to play though!
crash bandicoot - sonics ass game. not much to say about crash that hasnt been already said, i am glad that crash 4 still very much keeps the saturday morning cartoon spirit of this trashy deranged furry alive. crash is ALWAYS funny as hell to me. his horrifying deaths being so funny that they were made a collectable thing in that one racing game. nina cortex is the most based female character design i have seen in a while.
jet set radio / bomb rush cyberfunk - everyone and their mom brings up jsr now but its huge art inspo for a reason!! i really thought this was what the future would look like and how people would dress like, just cool as hell. except the entire fucking army coming for you over a graffiti is a pretty good representation of the 2020s.
say gex - gex is… a fascinating guy to say the least. i think im just gonna skip the first game, but i am quite curious about the 3d ones. the thing about gex is that hes so insufferable and outdated in his terminally TV-brained loserishness that he loops back to being actually pretty funny. i want to throw him against a wall but then again i like his cunty purple eyeshadow. honestly, im not afraid to admit i enjoy the channel hopping concept and aesthetics of these games a lot.
maybe an unpopular opinion, but i WANT a gex 4, a modern take on gex. specifically because of this pitch bible that is so fucking funny to me i think about it every day. fuck it, i would also give gex a terminally online fujoshi daughter. imagine THAT. fuck it, gex in yaoi tumblr sexyman world. gexs homoerotic rivalries with other failed platformer mascots. gex rescuing his kids from elsagate AI slop. or maybe its gex who needs to be rescued. with proper art direction and writing by all the beautiful and hilarious trans women i follow it would be amazing.
jumping flash - its been a while since i last time tried this out and have to update my memory on it, so i dont remember how well it holds up. but i looove how the second game especially looks.. and the music is so good!! i sometimes wonder what a modern version of these games would look, but i dunno if it would ever reach the same level of charm.
games i am planning to play but havent gotten to: sly cooper, jak and daxter and tomba. these too were games i watched my brother play, but dont remember much. apparently even the finnish dub for sly cooper is still really good. damn. truly a miracle.
donkey kong bananza looks really mecore but i dont have that kind of money to vomit out of me for nintendo. so this is probably just going to be me watching a walkthrough.
