IT LOOKED LIKE A MOON LANDSCAPE is a sound work released during OpenHUB residency. The trajectory of the residency was based on the artistic practices of Aalst's artist, Claire Stragier, whose long-term research project In de Vaart der Volkeren is closely linked to the theme of rural vs. urban. This long term project consists of performances and interventions in public spaces, particularly along the railway line between Brussels and Aalst. These projects served as a starting point for a further development during the residency-in-group OpenHUB.
As one of the three selected artists Valeria Merlini developed the sound installation "It looked like a moon landscape". The title is a quote to Claire Stragier's description of a performance she did with Annelien Vermeir along the railway line that connects the cities of Brussels and Ghent. Overturning their concept, "It looked like a moon landscape" changed their perspective: the railroad's landscape is not the stage for interventions addressed to the travelers anymore, but trains passing by became the stage and travelers became the actors. The perfect place to observe trains, to listen to and to record environmental sounds was the roof of Netwerk, which faces the rail road. Microphones were located where imaginary seats for audiences could have been positioned, oriented to the railway line. The soundwork is a field recordings composition adapted to the acoustic qualities of the very much reverberating room chosen for the installation. The long rectangular shape of the conctrete room recalls in its geometries a line of wagons and is oriented towards the railway line, as well.

SOUND MIRRORS AT DENGE
Three concrete “listening ears” at Denge near Dungeness in Kent are the best known as forerunner of radar. Acoustic mirrors were built on the south and northeast coasts of England between about 1916 and the 1930s. They were intended to provide early warning of incoming enemy aircraft.

JSSÂ thus provides a platform for theorists and artists who would like to present relevant work regarding the sonic environment.
JSS offers the possibility to present new insights into the relation between sonority and (the deconstruction of) identity, the concept of space, the influence of digital technology, urban planning, deafness, etc. It covers both the material production and active consumption of sound (including music, noise and “silence”) and the bio-cultural meaning of sound and listening. In this way, JSS contributes to a rethinking of the relation between acoustics and society.Â
The project radio aporee has started 2006. It is a global soundmap dedicated to phonography, field recording (and related practices) and the art of listening. it connects sound recordings and places, in order to create a sonic cartography, open to the public as a collaborative project. It contains recordings from numerous urban, rural and natural environments, showing their audible complexity, as well as the different perceptions, practices and artistic perspectives of its many contributors, related to sound, public and private spaces, listening and sense of place. The congress, organized every four years, is one of the network’s main events, an international gathering for researchers, artists and players engaged in analyzing the ambiance-related dimensions of the built environment and in the sensory construction of the contemporary world. Many approaches are at work in the field of architectural and urban ambiance, and these multiple contributions nurture its rich diversity. The International Congress on Ambiances aims to give voice to this activity, feeding on work exploring new forms of exchange between what is designed and what is experienced, between the measured and the qualified, the projected and the tested, the material and the immaterial.
