now that, my friends, is growth.
Head meet desk
Today, as students are working on their vocabulary, one walks up to my desk and stops right in front of a pile of dictionaries. Student: Where are the dictionaries? Me: (pointing to the pile of books, all with the word Dictionary prominently on the cover) Right there. Student: Those are books. Where are the dictionaries? And people wonder why teachers are stressed.
Never give up, never surrender, you can beat truth to death
So some of my students have decided to follow our psychotic orange president's lead. One essay was so obviously copied, I called the student up and showed said student their essay and the Wikipedia page, they had copied 2 whole paragraphs from, side-by-side to show the proof. She said obviously wiki had copied her. I gave her the F she richly deserved. The student denied any plagiarism. She brought her parents into it and the conclusion? I've been told by the parents, they are planning to sue wiki for stealing their "little angel's" ideas. Wonder how far that will get. Some days I can't help thinking having a moron for president doesn't set a good example.
Bit of fun
And for my real followers, a bit of fun. One year a senior turned in his final project, an essay, that looked very familiar. A quick check on Turnitin.com showed it was his sister's...my student the year before. I called his parents to report his plagiarism and thus failing grade. Here is their explanation: the student accidentally went into his sister's room, accidentally turned her computer on, accidentally opened Word, accidentally opened her old essay, accidentally erased her name, accidentally put his own, and finally accidentally printed it and turned it in. I had no words. I still don't.

And here we go
Welcome to 2017 where America will soon have an orange oompa-loompa, brainless, buffoon as Commander-in-Chief and his disgustingly corrupt appointees. Deity help us all.
Oh and hi-hi to the porn accounts now following me for no reason whatsoever. Seriously, I have 11 followers, are you thinking at all?
Why  we have dresscode
So one year the District got together with the parents and students to talk about dresscode  (Fully 4/5ths of the parents and students showed up.  Never had so many shown up to a meeting before!).  The parents and students assured those in charge that everyone was mature enough that honestly the district didnât need one.  And like the morons they are, the district listened.  For one week.  Why just a week?  Well, here are just a few of  the things that happened at my school that one week without any rules on how to dress.
1.  One of my own students showed up in a skirt so short, it literally couldnât get shorter without everyone know about carpets and drapes...if you get my drift.  She was wearing a âtube topâ that was a piece of fabric which barely covered her areolas.  I sent her to speak with someone about how she was dressed, but as there were no rules, the best they could do was call home.  Her mom cussed out the VP (a woman) for thinking her daughterâs outfit was unacceptable.  It got worse.
When she came back I told her to take a seat. Â She told me that would be impossible as she was not wearing any underwear and the seats were probably covered with germs. Â IF she sat down, every bit of flesh between her legs would come into contact with the plastic of the chair. Â At the time, I had 12 years of teaching experience and had never seen anything like this. I was literally speechless for a full minute. Â Back she went to the VP and eventually, the VP convinced mom to bring in some underwear. Â A thong. Â BTW, this was my 9th grade class.
2. Â Another young lady showed up in overalls. Just overalls. Â Iâm certain everyone assumed there was underwear involved, but they were wrong. Â During lunch the young lady and another student got into a fight. Â The overalls fell down. Â She was wearing nothing underneath. Â Dozens of people took out their phones and well you can guess the rest. Â In the end, there was nothing we could do. Some kids got away with their phones or sent the pictures before we could catch them. Â She moved to live with a relative out of state due to harassment which resulted.
3. Â While none of the male students seemed interested in anything like above, more than a few did show up in shirts with naked women on them, or cuss words, or racist slogans, etc. Â
There were many more incidents and that was just the first day. Â Almost every teacher in the district sent an e-mail stating this was unacceptable. CREATE A Â DRESSCODE! Â But we werenât the ones who convinced them to get a set of rules. Â Weds. the overalls family sued the district because it was all the districtâs fault for not having a dresscode to stop her from wearing such an outfit. Â
Documentaries
I once asked my seniors to watch a documentary over the weekend and discuss its strengths and weaknesses. Some responses: Avengers. ..a documentary about superheroes Teen Wolf...a documentary about werewolf culture Iron Sky ....a documentary about how we beat up the Nazi's CSI....a documentary about crime scenes And there were some really crazy ones. Yes, these were the more sane ones. There were some that were real documentaries, but not nearly enough. They then wrote a full page report on what qualifies as a real documentary as the lecture, handouts, and board work apparently were just too confusing. This time they took it seriously.
Burn out
Far too many people have commented what an easy job teachers have. Personally, I would love to have them try to teach one day just to watch them run screaming from the campus. Teaching is HARD. Here is one of the reasons. For example, last semester I had a senior student who just got up and left my classroom any time he wanted. I tried following the discipline rules. No one ever answered at home. I tried to have security take him to see his VP....who then sent the kid back to class no discipline. After much chasing around of VP's, he was given 4 hours to do homework at school on a Saturday. He didn't show up......too ANY of them. Meanwhile, he continues to disrupt my class, make discipline impossible, and teaching much more difficult. It turned out his parents were "difficult." Which meant dealing with them usually involved yelling, accusations of racism, and threats of lawsuits. So, everyone just stopped trying. Leaving the teachers to deal with the mess. Nothing was ever done to teach the student his behavior wasn't acceptable. Can you imagine him trying this at University? The military? Etc. And can you imagine how this makes the teacher feel? No support from Admin., increased student disrespect, teaching made harder because students think there are no consequences. An easy job? Get real.
My anime students
I always allow my students to suggest anime the club should consider. Rules: no nudity..or we can skip without losing plot, no excessive violence, basic common sense stuff. So.....their suggestions: One punch, man...the main character is fully naked! High school of the dead......wtf Beserk....omgwtfbbq! Evangelion...kind of shocked they knew this one Elfin lied. OK I have no words...just no There was a VERY long lecture following these suggestions. Headdesk

A hair redux
So with the year at an end I finally find shampoo that takes care of the frizz. My hair is now back to the slightly wavy, tiny bit curly flat it used to be. So while students are taking their finals and staring at my hair, my late student walks in. He takes one look at my hair and yells "This is the last day of school and I don't have to put up with this anymore." And storms out. Good grief.
So my right leg died as several nerves were severed by my spine which is breaking down due to a rare genetic disorder. Â I walk into class with a cane and dragging my leg behind me.
Student: What happened?
Me: Â My leg died.
Another student: Â Who killed it?!
So Wrong, SO FUN
So, we try to bring other subjects into our lessons to show students how subjects connect and education is not isolated subjects.
Me: Â This story is about something famous that happened in 1492. Â Can anyone remember what?
Student shouts out: OH! Â Thatâs the room in that movie where the guy gets trapped.
Student #2: Yeah, and he canât get out. Â
Student #3 : Â Does this mean weâre watching that movie!
Another time, we were talking about what movies scare us for Halloween.
Student: Â Itâs that movie about the giant snake that eats people.Â
Student #2: Â I know it. Â Anacondom!
The Joys of....cholesterol?
So, I have a badly injured back.  My employers sent me to one of their âhighly qualifiedâ doctors.  His recommendation?  Cholesterol...lots and lots and lots of it.  It will âcureâ my spine âright up.â  Ummmm....yeah....Iâm gonna pass.  He actually got offended and gave me a lecture on how healthy cholesterol was for you, there is NO bad cholesterol, and healthy people need to eat as much as possible.  Did this guy get his medial degree in 1492?! Â
Reality...a sometimes friend
So, after all that seriousness....perhaps the oddest moment in my class.
Two 9th graders were talking in my class as I passed out papers:
Student #1 was pulling his hair: Â I bet if I was man enough, I could go Super Saiyan!
ME: Â You both realized itâs just a tv show right? Â No one can go Super Saiyan.
Student #2 Shows what you know.
#1 Sheâs girl. Â They donât anything about being a man. Â (He then proceeds to concentrate and look constipated like thry do on the show before going Super Saiyan.)
#2 (looking at me sadly) Sorry. Â I forgot youâre a girl. Â
And they both go back to looking constipated. Â I went back to passing out papers.

How dare I?!
So....I received a phone call the next week from her father. Â How dare I refuse her essay?!?!?!?!
Is it ready?
No, she just started. Â Thatâs not the point.
She had FOUR months just like everyone else. Â Not to mention she said she simply did not do it. Â
Thatâs not the point!
Iâm sorry. Â I donât understand the problem. Â She has a make-up essay and will be able to get some of the missing points back. Â She is being treated no different that any other student.
Thatâs not the POINT!
(At which point, I am confused. Â WHAT is the point?)
Turns out the point was I was trying to hold his child responsible for her own actions. Â I WAS A MONSTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Â And he hung up on me.
The next day, an Admin said he had scheduled a meeting with the father who was....get this....threatening to sue. Â TO SUE.
I spoke with the Admin, gave him all the paperwork I give the students and waited for the meeting.
OMGWTFBBQ.
At the meeting I explained everything we did, all the rules, showed him the paperwork (which he did not look at and literally threw it on the Adminâs desk), and about the FOUR MONTHS OF TIME for what is basically a 1.5 page paper. Â I even explained her attitude demanding more time and that she simply did not do the essay because she didnât want to.
The Admin asked the student if this was all true.
Yes, but itâs not fair! Â She wonât let me turn in the paper late.
Admin: Â Have you let students turn in the paper late?
None.
The father jumped in at this point and started telling the Admin his child was just that a child. Â (She was less than 2 months from her 18th birthday.) And holding a child to such a rigid standard was unacceptable. Â
The Admin asked if I could see his point.
I pointed out sheâs a senior. Â One who has talked endlessly about going to college. Â IF she doesnât learn how to do big projects, manage her time, and meet deadlines now, when is she going to learn it?
Father: Â In college.
(WTF....since when does college teach how to meet deadlines and act like an adult? Â If you canât arrive grown up, you are usually in a LOT of trouble.)
So, the Admin looks at me and asks if I can see his point.
(Well, yes I can see his point....itâs a stupid point, but I can see it...but I am soooooo not agreeing with it.) Â I end up repeating she had PLENTY of time but CHOSE to not do the assignment. Â CHOSE. Â
The father gets really pissed. Â What a mean person I am, how I must hate my students, how I must pray every night for them to fail, and I drink their tears too!
I refuse to back down. Â She had FOUR MONTHS and CHOSE to do NOTHING. How am I supposed to reward her for that? Â
In the end, the father threatens to sue us. Â Iâm not afraid; he has NOTHING...kind of like what his kid did. Â But the Admin.
He changes the grade, forbids me from changing it back, and removes her from my class. Â
But here is the real kicker.  She goes around telling everyone she can that her father forced me to give her an  A.  That Iâm not allowed to fail anyone.  Just have your parents come in and complain.  You do NOT want to know what that last semester was like or how many of my Seniors refused to do the last project (the fun one) and ended up losing their admittance due to getting a D in my class (BIG GPA drop!) or losing scholarships.  Because, it turns out, the OTHER Admin. back me up.  They want students leaving our school with the skills to excel in college. Â
To this day, I just do not get it. Â How can you treat your kids like this. Â It does nothing but teach them they donât actually have to grow up. Â BUT THEY DO! Â Eventually, they have to step into the real, adult world, and they will do so woefully unprepared. Â Sigh. Â
Time for nothing part 1
Because we are determined to make sure our Seniors are ready for college (or a school to train them for a career), we make them write a paper their Senior year. Â The paper letâs us know where their skills are and helps us teach them anything they are missing and might need. Â
Itâs a pretty simple paper. Â Pick a topic, research it, site evidence, and make sure it is 3-5 pages, double-spaced, and typed. Â Basically, itâs a paper and half single spaced...written in FOUR MONTHS. Â (Note the time because this is gonna be a major point of mine later.)
They are walked through every part of the essay. Â In my class, we build an example paper together, the due date is in BIG RED LETTERS on the board, they get multiple papers outlining every rule, and a ton of resources. Â I expect the best paper they ever written in return. Â They have FOUR MONTHS. Â (Trust me, this number is important.)
However, their best efforts arenât always what I get. Â Some apparently only have time to do....nothing. Â Therefore, I make the essay worth 25% for their final grade to give them a feel for how it will be in higher, educational classes and to inspire them to make some kind of effort. Â One student simply did not do it. Â
When I called her name for a paper, she said âDidnât do it.â  I asked why.  There might have been a problem.  (One studentâs house literally burned down the night before the paper was due!) Nope....she just didnât feel like doing it.  I asked her if she understood what this was going to do to her grade.  She shrugged.  âI have an A.  Itâs not like this is going to affect anything.â
OMG. Â Whatever. Â She make her choice. Â So, the paper grade was 0. Â The following Monday, the student showed up in my class. Â âYou are giving me more time.â
Nice way to ask. Â âThere is a make up essay you can do. Â But it is not worth the same amount of points.â Â (I always have a backup essay ready.)
âNo. Â You will accept the essay from me in three weeks. Â And you will give me full points.â
Where did this kid learn manners?! Â âNo. Â I will not. Â You chose not to do the essay. Â Now, you have an opportunity to earn some of those points back. Â This is the only chance you will be given.â
She stormed out. Â I was foolish enough to think that was the end of it. Â I had no idea of the shit storm heading my way. Â Part 2....tomorrow.
