It's so important for Danny to be a little bit selfish... Fully selfless hero moments can happen but shouldn't be his default state. His preferred choice would be to close the blinds and go to sleep as the world burns, yet he ended up helping anyways, and that contrast is pretty important.

you know i am a huge fan of when characters are technically alive or dead by all rights but their function in the narrative is the opposite. like a character who is alive but trapped somewhere/comatose/etc for an extended period of time/forever and has no agency to save themselves and there’s little to no hope of anyone else saving them from that situation? they’re alive strictly speaking like they never died or anything but they are functionally dead in the narrative. on the flip side if a character has died but they come back as a ghost or a zombie or whatever undead being and in that state they retain some sort of agency and they’re still actively driving and pushing the story just like any other character? they may be dead but for all intents and purposes they’re alive and here. y’know
