Season 2 has finally come to an end, and the decision for Season 3 was announced at the same time. Many people including myself, had predicted a movie adaptation, but we are happy to hear that it will be a TV anime. The reason we predicted a movie was, of course, due to the budget issues of the animation studio. There have been movies for the series of TV anime shows, but they used to be original side stories separate from the main series, so even people who didn’t watch the movie had no problem understanding the story of the TV anime sequel. However, since the historical success of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie “Mugen Train Arc” in 2020, more and more TV anime shows have been adapting parts of the main story into movies. This is because the profits from the movie can be used to fund higher-quality sequels and improve the working conditions of low-wage animators. Under such situation, the production of Frieren Season 3 as a TV anime is very welcome news for us viewers, but I guess we should support them more and more somehow. The Golden Land Arc is so long, it is likely that Season 3 will consist entirely of the arc, with around 12 episodes.
Which episode is your favorite in Season 2? The most popular episode, generally recognized as the climax, is probably Ep. 36: “A Magnificent End.” The animation of the battles was truly amazing. The sequence where Stark throws away his axe, jumps unarmed onto the building and onto the windmill, tackles the Divine Revolte, and flying Genau catches him as he falls, then lets him pick up his axe and resumes his attack was anime-original scene, but it was fantastic. Apparently, in a recent character popularity poll, Genau came in first place. However, that popularity poll guaranteed the production of merchandise for the character who came in first place, so it was natural that the main characters, who already have merchandise available, didn’t get many votes. If it were a poll based purely on popularity, Himmel would probably be the undisputed number one.
Personally, my favorite is Ep. 37: “Himmel’s Memoirs. They’re just partially written memoirs of trivial everyday life, but the way the memoirs he wrote ended up in Frieren’s hands across time was wonderful. If Frieren hadn’t wasted money and had a lot of it, she wouldn’t have been able to get the memoirs. I think this feeling that “all events, the thoughts and actions of many people are connected to the present” is precisely Frieren’s “世界観（せかいかん/Sekai’kan）.” Google AI suggests that the word 世界観 is a fundamental way of seeing and perceiving the world and life, and what meaning and value one finds in it, and that in English it’s worldview. One overseas reactor used the word Frieren’s "universe,” which was translated as 世界観 by a Japanese on Youtube, and I like that. I really love the Frieren’s universe. (I think Demon Slayer also has the same underlying theme. While Frieren focuses on their daily life after her journey to defeat the Demon King, Demon Slayer focuses on the battle to defeat Muzan Kibutsuji, but both stories are based on around 1000 years history and have the similar themes.)
Now that I’ve transcribed the scripts for Season 2, I’d like to share the line that left the biggest impression on me as follows;
Himmel “If they pay us, they don’t owe us anything. We’re the party of heroes. What we want is to help people, not words of gratitude. If we make people indebted to us, we haven’t really helped them.”

I really like the line because it feels like expressing Himmel’s deep kindness and compassion, which isn’t just superficial.
There’s still a year and a half until Season 3 airs. On X, I’ve seen a lot of posts from Japanese fans saying, “I have to live until then!” Because Frieren cherishes everyday life, it makes us viewers want to cherish our own everyday lives, and it feels like a “reward” to be able to watch new episodes in the future. Until Season 3 starts, I plan to work on other shows’ episodes remained, and revise some of my past scripts, but I’m still open to your reactions and requests, so please let me know if there’s anything. (I’ve been wondering whether I should translate the short videos titled “〇〇の魔法（まるまるのまほう/Maru’maru no Maho）” on the official YouTube channel. Frieren “It takes time to gather the manpower and funds required for mining. It’s not unusual for people to claim spots using anti-personnel barriers so that others don’t take them. In any case, let’s go slay this monster.”

〇△□✕☆※… This kind of string of symbols is a technique usually used in manga, and it’s used when you can’t understand what’s being said. As for this scene, it was not in the original manga, but added in the Japanese subtitle of the anime, where Frieren’s words were interrupted by Fern wiping her face.

As you can see from the green sections of the script, this episode contains a lot of anime-original scenes. Furthermore, the anime-original parts are cleverly connected, and the ending, where Frieren tries out the spell she acquired in the first half of the episode, while being wrapped up by the kraken and dragged into the sea, is so funny! I really love Himmel’s gentle smile and the voice actor’s voice in the flashback scenes. Do you know that the VA is the same person who voiced Genya Shinazugawa in Demon Slayer? Also, Frieren’s VA is the same person who voiced Anya in SPYxFAMILY, Concubine Gyokuyou and Princess Lingli in The Apothecary Diaries, and Hinatsuru (one of three wives of Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui) in Demon Slayer. I’m not very knowledgeable about anime or voice actors, but I’m truly amazed that the same VA can play so many different characters, even just in the shows I work on my blog.
After this episode aired, the beautiful illustration of Himmel drawn by the author was posted by the official X account, so I’m sharing it here.
Currently, the original manga is unfortunately on hiatus due to the author’s poor health. There are two authors, so it hasn’t been revealed which of them is unwell, or any further details. While I’m eager to read the continuation of the story, I sincerely hope that the authors will take their time and show us wonderful episodes once they have fully recovered.
It’s confirmed that the next episode will be the Season 2 finale. Whether the story will continue as a movie or as Season 3 of the TV anime will probably be announced soon after next week’s broadcast. I’m sad that Season 2 is ending, but I’m really looking forward to the sequel and can’t wait!

Generally speaking, Japanese tends to use many ambiguous expressions, while English tends to use many clear ones. But in this line, it’s the complete opposite, which I found interesting. Moreover, it’s funny that the way Methode spoke sounded just like that of a parent or a superior.

The animation in these fights was really cool! Genau’s movements using his wings and Methode’s elegant movements were beautiful and captivating. A little was said about Methode’s clan, but there are still many things we don’t know, and I want to know more. The scene where Genau crawls towards Stark to save him before losing consciousness is not in the original manga, and the flashback of Stark and Genau’s previous partner saying Genau was a good person is also original to the anime. Strictly speaking, Genau is talking about his previous partner in the first half, and Stark in the second half. So I think “I’ve known the person like you. Probably, you’ll not live long” is better in this case. “I’ve known the person like you” is added in the anime, and the original line is “Stark, you are a good person. Probably, you’ll not live long,” so the subject is “you.”

For your information, when we say “It’s important to ease the tension,” we say “緊張『の』緩和が大事.”

I’m not sure, but the English translation sounded harsher to me than the original, especially in the phrase “from the likes of you.” I guess they tried to make this part harsh to accentuate the gap between the next scene, while the original Japanese line puts the accent on “petting” by “なでなで『なんて』.”

The scene I was most looking forward to in this episode was where Serie hid behind Genau, who said “No more than 10 minutes per day.” 10 minutes is a long time to pet someone. As usual, it was funny how Fern got jealous! Anyway, it looks like we’ll get to see a real battle scene in the next episode.

Genau “Who knows? It was Ms. Serie’s decision. All I can say is that first-class mages who get dispatched to the Northern Plateau are usually the type that loves fighting more than three meals a day.”
Methode “Very well. Based on traces of magic and other evidence, there are four primary demons who attacked the village. All four have vanished from the area.”
Frieren “A highly skilled and experienced demon warrior. They fight by enhancing their enhancing their physical capabilities with powerful magic. Some are devotees who spend hundreds of years perfecting their martial skills. Some of the generals in the Demons King’s army were far stronger than Eisen.”
“Lord Revolte. Our prey has been caught in our net. They’re a tasty meal, rich in mana. One warrior, three mages. Three are first-class. We can handle that many. Shall we attack?”
Revolte “They will. That’s why we provoked them by killing all those people. In the course of destroying all these villages on the Northern Plateau, I’ve noticed something.”
Revolte “That’s just how they are. There’s nothing more to it. We don’t need to know why. Come to think of it, I’ve heard of an eccentric demon who studies humanity.”
Genau “I’m not a good person. Quite the opposite. I’ve done whatever it took to bring peace to the northern lands. I’ve killed and forsaken many people. Perhaps this is what I deserve. You get used to people dying, you know.”
Genau “I don’t feel even slightly sad. My hometown’s been destroyed, but I feel nothing. I’m only staying in this village because I thought I should. I’ve forsaken so many in the past, so what am I even doing?”
Methode “I love giving headpats to small girls, but Ms. Serie doesn’t let me do it often. Not only that, but she always looks so displeased when I do.”
Frieren “It’s the same principle. To demons, flying magic isn’t even magic. That’s why this is a common sight when fighting them. As I thought, they’re accustomed to battle. They fight like members of the Demon King’s army.”
Genau “It comes from the four swords he created using magic. He can freely change the weight of his swords. Sometimes they’re sharp and light as a feather. Sometimes they’re as heavy as a boulder. They’re called the Divine Cleaving Swords, after the blade that split mountains during mythical times.”
Genau “It’s contradictory, isn’t it? Magic can create objects that shouldn’t exist. In particular, weapons made from magic are the embodiment of murderous intent. Demons that create such weapons kill many people― far more than necessary, as if to test them.”
Revolte “You’re one twisted person. We’re both capable of speech, are we not? But if you don’t wish to talk… then I, too, shall focus on exterminating the pests before me.”

何事かと思った（なにごとかとおもった/Nani’goto’kato omotta）: I wondered what’s happened.
This phrase is often used when you are surprised by a sudden and unusual event and had no idea what’s happened. The same phrase is also used by Frieren later as follows;
Frieren “Neither did we. We received the demon-slaying request while we were camping on the other side of the mountains. It really took me by surprise.”
Genau “Quiet. One of my eyes was just put out. One warrior and one hidden mage―no, two mages?”
鳥（とり/Tori）: bird
目（め/Me）: eye
The author gave the furigana as “め(Me: eye)” in spite that the correct one was “とり(Tori: bird)”, which means the bird had the role of an eye for Genau. That’s a technique often used in manga, where one kanji can have two meanings. The technique is also used later as follows;
Methode “There’s still one loose end that Mr. Genau wishes to tie up.”
腑に落ちない（ふにおちない/Fu’ni ochi’nai）: I don’t get it, It doesn’t make sense, It doesn’t add up, Something is off, It doesn’t sit right with me.

Season 2 had always been wrapped in a peaceful atmosphere, but from this episode, it suddenly took on a dark, ominous tone. Genau is always cold in both his expressions and words, and does not show his emotions, but we see that he was seething with rage after his hometown was destroyed, to the point that Frieren thought his spell was a demon’s. I’m not a fan of bloody scenes, so in this episode, I liked Fern getting sulky about Methode getting close to Frieren, and Frieren’s cute sleeping face when the squirrel brought the letter requesting slaying demons.

Genau “This is the standard amount to station in a village this size. Even then, they were far better soldiers than the village deserved. This was their captain. He was a great man who defended the village for years.”
Genau “Mura’ni ita mazoku’tachi’wa, karera’no ashi’moto’nimo oyoba’nai zako’bakari’datta. …Osoraku mura’o osotta mazoku’wa, mada ikite’iru. Yokatta’na. Omae’tachi’ga koko’ni kita’nowa, muda’ashi’nanka’ja nai.”
Genau “The demons in the village were weaklings who’d have stood no chance against them. The one who attacked the village is probably still alive. Good news. You didn’t come here in vain.”
Genau “In general, villages on the Northern Plateau don’t have graveyards. If they do, they’re tucked into corners of sturdy fortress cities, or they’re nobles’ graves protected by barriers. Everyone else is buried in common graveyards at the Plateau’s southern edge, where there are fewer monsters. They go to the trouble of transporting them there with a Chivalric Order of Norm escort. Do you know why?”
Genau “Because if they’re not careful, the smell of decay attracts monsters. It’s a hellish sight. Not even the bones are left behind. For a while now, the Norm Company has been insisting people cremate their dead. It’s the kind of rational thinking you’d expect from merchants. I agree with them. But the clergy have voiced their opposition. I understand how they feel. Painfully so. It’s inhumane to suggest burning people who already suffered painful deaths. But it’s something we’ll eventually have to accept. Soon enough, no one will be able to rest in their homeland either way.”
Frieren “Neither did we. We received the demon-slaying request while we were camping on the other side of the mountains. It really took me by surprise.”
Methode “As far as I know, most dual-wielding styles emphasize a balance between attacking and defending. Typically, one blade is a longsword for inflicting fatal blows, while the other is a more maneuverable shortsword. In other words, there should naturally be a difference in the cuts inflicted.”
Methode “We did consider that assumption and attempted to recreate the same cuts based on the marks left on the dead and the field of battle, but… A dual-wielding style still resulted in unrealistic movements. What comes next is still only speculation, but…”
Stark “I guess there are cities on the Northern Plateau.”
I felt something was off about this translation. Stark thought there were just small villages and no big towns on the Northern Plateau. If I translate the original Japanese into English directly, it’d be “So there are towns on the Northern Plateau, too.” I think “too” is necessary here, since the original Japanese has the phrase 北部高原に“も”.
Fasu “Jo-chan’wa hakushiki’dana. Sono toshi’de Ko’Erufugo’ga yomeru’towa.”
Fass “You’re well-educated if you can read ancient elvish at your age.”
I thought “if” was only used in hypothetical cases, so I didn’t know it could be used in facts like this. I guess it’s like “I’m surprised. You can read ancient elvish at your age?”
Norm “I am Norm, the company president. Ms. Frieren, mage of the party of heroes, you will be paying off the debt you’ve owed for eighty years in full.”
借金（しゃっきん/Shakkin）: debt, loan, owing
耳を揃えて（みみをそろえて/Mimi’o soroete）: (pay money) in full
借用書の利息通りなら: If the interest rate is as stated on the document, If the interest rate on the document is correct, If you calculate is according to the interest rate on the document
As you can see, her words point to the fact that the reason the debt is so large is not the amount originally borrowed, but the interest.

The scene where Frieren says she has to work in the mines for 300 years is a gag part unique to this show, so it’s nonsense to think too deeply about it. However, if I may nitpick, why did Himmel, who cared so much about Frieren and took so many actions for her and her future, leave the debt unattended? Also, once the hero’s party defeated Demon King and saved the world, I think the debts could be forgiven… From that perspective, it makes sense that Fern would want to raid the mines. It was a funny episode anyway, though.

Fass “I dug it all by myself. Most people think all dwarves are miners, but I grew up in the city. I had to study mining from scratch. I did it for that legendary liquor.”
Frieren “Fass. No one loves liquor as much as him. He’s spent over two hundred years looking for Boshaft. He asked us for help the last time we met, but we had a Demon King to defeat at the time, so we said no.”
Fass “According to legend, there’s Boshaft stored in the ruins underground here. And two hundred years ago, when I found this stone monument, I knew it was true.”
Fern “This is ancient elvish. The inscription proclaims that Boshaft is the greatest liquor to have ever existed. ‘Milliarde.’ Perhaps that’s who wrote this inscription.”
Fass “But as you can see, the doors to this stone chamber won’t open. A powerful barrier was erected to preserve the liquor. You should be able to break it, though.”
Milliarde “So that they don’t end up like me. Frieren, could you imagine the thing you spent your life searching for turning out to be worthless garbage?”
Fass “Frieren. My search ended in disappointment, but I’ve never had such a fun night. I’m glad you guys were here. Liquor’s meant to be enjoyed with good times.”
Frieren “Don’t complain. The Northern Plateau is barren outside of the grain-producing Bier region, and goods aren’t even circulating now. We’ll be eating mostly this while we camp, at the very least.”

Frieren “That’s the problem. I don’t know the specific cause, but things change over time. Maybe the Norm Company isn’t as strong as it once was. But it’s likely that they still have a lot of influence on the Northern Plateau. We should avoid making waves.”
Norm “I am Norm, the company president. Ms. Frieren, mage of the party of heroes, you will be paying off the debt you’ve owed for eighty years in full.”
Norm “Even when converted to Reich gold coins, the most trusted currency on the Northern Plateau, she owes over three hundred. Do you think you can procure such a sum?”
Frieren “The Norm Company president of two generations ago started out as a backwater noble cast out to the Northern Plateau. He was a great man who invested in this barren land and built a logistics network, bringing stability to people’s lives. At the time, nobody expected much from our party of heroes, but he provided us with funds with no repayment deadline. I never thought I’d be treated like this by his grandson. But there must be a reason you came all the way to this mine, right?”
Norm “I’m sure they hadn’t. I’m not fond of it either. Since conditions have worsened here, we’ve lost a third of our armed caravans and army fighting demons. Our logistics network is in ruins, too. If the Norm Company were a nation, we’d have fallen already. However, we are a trading company. As long as we have the funds, we can always rebuild.”
Norm “When you arrived in this region, I felt the Goddess must’ve brought you here. That scrap of paper representing your party’s debt gained tremendous value. This mine is still under development. If we strike silver ore, we’ll turn a huge profit. Enough to forgive the party of heroes’ debt and more. It should be easy for you to find, Ms. Frieren.”
Norm “If our logistics network falls apart entirely, many people will starve and die. Please save the people of the Northern Plateau, Ms. Frieren. Also, if you help us, you’ll have soft bread to eat even in the farthest reaches of the Northern Plateau.”
Frieren “You’re as shrewd as your grandfather. This is why I can’t stand merchants. Fine. You have a deal. Either way, I intended to repay the debt I owed your grandfather.”
髪の毛をアップにする（Kami’no’ke’o appu’ni suru）: tie up one’s hair
In this case, it was Fern who actually tied Frieren’s hair, so it feels a bit strange that the subject is “she.”
But in Japanese, it’d still be natural regardless of who tied, even if the subject “彼女は（かのじょは/Kanojo’wa）: she” were not omitted here, and I wonder if it’s the same in English.

Generally speaking, it refers to the penetration of liquids or flavors, but it is also often used when you are deeply moved or when you are warming your body and soul in a bath.

身も蓋もない（みもふたもない/Mi’mo futa’mo nai）: brutally frank, too direct, straight from the shoulder
This phrase is used to point out that the words are too frank and lack emotion or atmosphere or consideration.
Stark “I actually had Frieren choose those places.”
だれかに〇〇してもらう(Dareka’ni 〇〇shite’morau): Someone have someone else 〇〇(verb） - Stark had Frieren choose those places (for him).
だれかに〇〇してあげる(Dareka’ni 〇〇shite’ageru): Someone 〇〇(verb) for someone else – Frieren chose those places for Stark.
だれかが（〇〇して）くれる（〇〇shite’kureru）: Someone else 〇〇(verb) for you(the speaker). – Stark said, “Frieren chose those places for me.”
These expressions are all commonly used in Japanese, but I guess they can be easily confused by English speakers. When describing something someone does for someone else, these phrases implicitly convey gratitude. So, if gratitude should not be included, do not use them. In this case, it’d be “実(じつ)は、フリーレンが選(えら)んだんだ。: Actually, Frieren chose those places.”
The phrases “選んでもらった” implies that Frieren chose him at Stark’s request, and that Stark is grateful for that.
Frieren “Sure. We’re going north anyway. We’ll slay it on our way. You’re okay with that, right?”
どうせ(Do-se): anyway, anyhow, at any rate, at all
This word usually has a negative and derogatory meaning to what follows, but in this case, Frieren meant the request of the villager was no problem because she would go through the spot “anyway”, or “either way.”
ついでに（Tsuide’ni）: on the way, while I’m at it, doing something additional that was not the original purpose
「コンビニに行くなら、ついでに私にアイスクリームを買ってきてくれない？（こんびににいくなら、ついでにわたしにあいすくりーむをかってきてくれない？(Konbini’ni iku’nara, tsuide’ni watashi’ni aisu’kurīmu’o katte’kite’kure’nai?)」: “If you’re going to the convenience store, could you buy me some ice cream while you’re there?”

Again, many anime-original parts were added in this episode. The scene of Frieren’s date with Himmel that she talked about in the previous episode is completely original to the anime, and the battle scene with the monster in the second half only lasts about five frames in the original manga. Fern really looked cute dressed up! It would have been nice if Stark had said the words “It suits you” at the beginning, but I guess that can’t be helped since he’s not used to that sort of thing. Frieren and Himmel’s date felt much more like a date than I had imagined. I guess Heiter and Eisen thoughtfully paired them up when they accepted the request. Every memory with Himmel is so beautiful that it really gets me…
第4話（第32話）『誰かの故郷（だれかのこきょう/Dareka’no Kokyo）』 / Episode 4 (Ep.32): Other People’s Homes

Eisen “The hidden hot spring of the Etwas Mountains was just a foot bath. It wasn’t worth the effort at all. It was a truly ridiculous adventure. It’s strange, though. I wouldn’t trade my memories of those ridiculous adventures with my friends for anything. I’ll never forget that view.”
割に合わん（わりにあわん/Wari’ni awan） ＝ rough and manly way of saying “割に合わない”

Frieren “Listen, Fern, when two close friends of opposing sex go out with each other and nobody else, that’s a date. That’s what my master said.”
気心の知れた（きごころのしれた/Kigokoro’no shireta）: familiar and dependable, old and trusted
It doesn’t just mean being close, it means knowing each other well, and usually have for a long time.
In the original manga, there’s only one panel where Fern says to Frieren “I’ve been asked out on a date” and Frieren says “So you, too?” And all the conversation after that is original to the anime. I think that Frieren had another experience that could be called a date, when she went shopping with Himmel and was presented with the ring by him on one knee, but maybe she doesn’t intend to tell anyone about that.

There were quite a lot of scenes original to the anime in this episode. What I particularly liked was the scene where Frieren comes out of the hot spring with her hair wrapped in a towel in a unique and complicated way and is eating a popsicle. As an aside, the popsicle she was eating is very similar to the famous “ガリガリ君（がりがりくん/Gari’gari’kun） popsicle sold in Japan. I love eating a popsicle every day after taking a bath, and on Friday nights in particular, watching Frieren with my daughter while eating ice cream, which is a little more expensive than on other days, is the luxurious and happy time for me. As for her tantrum scene too, it was so funny that she cried in so many different ways, while she just cried “うおーん(Uooon)” in one panel in the original manga.
The phrases written in green were not in the original manga and were added in the anime. We Japanese anime fans call that アニオリパート（あにおりぱーと: anime-original part）.
Also, the phrases in orange are explained in my memo that will be posted later.
Man “Come to think of it, I heard from my grandfather that there’s a hidden hot spring in the mountains back there. That was over thirty years ago, though.”
フリーレン「エトヴァス山(さん)の秘湯(ひとう)だね。」
Furīren “Etovasu’San’no hito-dane.”
Frieren “It’s the hidden hot spring of the Etwas Mountains.”
Stark “The hidden hot spring of the Etwas Mountains… I feel like I’ve heard those words before. Oh, I remember now. Frieren, I think I’d like to visit the hidden hot spring.”
Eisen “The hidden hot spring of the Etwas Mountains was just a foot bath. It wasn’t worth the effort at all. It was a truly ridiculous adventure. It’s strange, though. I wouldn’t trade my memories of those ridiculous adventures with my friends for anything. I’ll never forget that view.”
Stark “It doesn’t feel like I can take it back now. So I thought I’d ask you to suggest some places she might like. Actually, never mind. I shouldn’t have asked―”
Frieren “You should start by getting her something to eat at the market. She gets cranky when she’s hungry. Don’t skip the food stalls. Fern has loved snacking since she was little.”
Frieren “She’d probably like shops with pretty items on display. Fern likes baked goods, but what she wants depends on her mood, so you should choose a few dessert shops.”
Frieren “He talked about Fern’s preferences all the time. ‘She gets cranky when she’s hungry,’ ‘she likes snacking,’ ‘she likes pretty things,’ and ‘her preferences change depending on her mood’ are all things Heiter taught me. Heiter seemed to want me to be a parental figure to Fern, but ultimately, I failed to discover anything she liked.”
Frieren “Come to think of it, we first celebrated Fern’s birthday on the road in a place like this. You have some nice things to say sometimes, Stark.”
シュタルク「フ…。だろ。」
Shutaruku “Fu… Daro.”
Stark “I know, right?”
フリーレン「カウントを一回分(いっかいぶん)戻(もど)してあげよう。」
Furīren “Kaunto’o ikkai’bun modoshite’age’yo.”
Frieren “I’ll strike one offense from the record.”
