The antagonist stood absolutely motionless on the beach, facing the roaring waves, their hair being battered to and fro by the wind. Their hands were sunk into their pockets and their shoes were just out of reach of the water, as though they were taunting each wave to get closer and closer and watching with satisfaction as it failed each time.
The protagonist approached, stepping up to their right shoulder.
“Come back to hotel,” they said gently, close enough to the other’s ear that they didn’t have to shout over the wind. “You’ll freeze out here.”
“Look,” the antagonist said, pointing at the sea to their left, ignoring the protagonist’s words. “See how the sun reflects off the sea? It looks like a million stars flickering in and out of existence.” They tipped their head to the side slightly, their eyes remaining fixed on the ocean. “You didn’t think I was capable of appreciating beauty, did you?”
The protagonist caught the antagonist’s hand and clasped it between theirs, their breath hitching slightly as they realise quite how cold the antagonist’s hands had become. “Come back, please. We’ve only got two more days left.”
“Before we have to go back to hating each other, I know,” the antagonist replied. They instinctively rubbed their thumb against the protagonist’s knuckles as the protagonist tried to warm their hand up, something more akin to a grimace than a smile spreading across their face. Suddenly they turned, catching the protagonist’s shoulders, levelling their gaze with them. Something pleading came across antagonist’s expression, a hesitancy that was preparing to be disappointed.
“Stay here with me,” the antagonist said, bowing their head earnestly. “Not on this beach, not in the cold, but in this town... we can get an apartment. Normal jobs. You don’t need to go home, I—“
“Hush,” the protagonist said, reaching a hand to press against the side of the antagonist’s face. “You know I can’t.”
“Why not?” The antagonist set their jaw, straightening up. “If you love me so much—“
The protagonist leaned forward and set a soft kiss on the antagonist’s lips, bringing their words to a halt. They pulled back, resting their forehead against the antagonist’s and closing their eyes, breathing deeply. “I’ll come back. We’ll come back. When it’s all over, we’ll be back here, and we’ll have a beautiful future and you can spend as long as you want down by the sea and we’ll be happy. Together.”
The antagonist bit their bottom lip, clearly struggling to form a reply. Eventually they answered, in a rough, whispering voice. “Promise?”
