Cupping the side of her face with such care---he whispered behind the mask. 'I seize them for you. I will /tear/ them apart with my teeth if I have to. I will make them /pay/ for what they did to you, Rin. There isn't anything I won't do for you.'
CONFLICT stirs in her heart as its beat quickens. rin would have given anything to see him again, alive and well — but this is not what she imagined. so different from the boy she once knew, he was now a monster; he is not well. cruel in his ways and harsh in his tones, except to her. she is the exception, though his cruelty effects her all the same.
her guilt is overwhelming. not only could she not save him, but she is the reason he is on this path. i will make them pay for what they did to you — the words echo in her mind. they remind her of the choices she’s made; her fingers twitch as she fights the reflex to bring them to the ruined skin on her chest. with a shaky breath inwards, her heart begins to ache.
it pains her to see him like this. his hand soft against her cheek, she can’t bring herself to look at the mask. to see the mask is to see behind it, to see that the obito she knew is gone. true as people may believe it, as it may be, she will not accept it. he is still there. somewhere, buried deep, he is. twisted by ill-founded beliefs and loss, she does not want memories of his innocence soiled by this corruption, though it is those memories that make her believe this can be undone.
❛ if that’s true, obito – ❜ his name slips, unintentional; her eyes squeeze shut as she hears herself say it, pulling away just slightly from his touch. she hesitates before continuing, taking a deep breath to compose herself. ❛ –then stop this. ❜
rin knows her words will not be enough, but she will cling to her hope, even if false. she needs to believe in him. however, she knows she should not care, she knows she should fear his goals and obsessions more. if she does not believe there is good in him, who else will? there would be no one else would act as a beacon, a lighthouse to signal shore, in the dark of his mind.
