People who consider a lack of empathy to be an objectively negative thing have never thought about how valuable of a skill it is to be able to remain calm and focused when everyone around you is upset and panicking. Lacking empathy is being able to remember the steps to CPR when everyone is screaming and crying because a child just got pulled out of the bottom of a pool. It’s keeping your cool when everyone around you at your job is yelling at each other because someone called in sick and now you’re slammed. It’s being able to keep focused on safety procedures instead of running into a burning building with no gear on because you hear people screaming. Having zero emotional connection to your environment can be an extremely helpful trait that I feel gets unfairly demonized when it quite literally has possibly saved the life of you or someone you know.
