I was curious as to exactly how Barbieās face has changed across the 56-year span sheās been around.
Personally, I think the molds they used from 1987-1995 are the cutest, but then I was still a little girl playing with Barbies at that time, so I may be a bit biased.
dermatologists hate her
the 1979 though
Okay, not usually something I would reblog, but 1959 barbie is having exactly none of your shit and Iām kinda here for that.
Also, just so you know, your boyfriend hit on 1966 Barbie. Ā His body is buried in the swamp.
Yeah and im pretty sure 1980 barbie is actually possesed with a demon.
It was the 80ā²s darling, we all had demons.
Forget that, I want the 1983 Frankenstein Barbie!
Oh my god! Ā I didnāt even see that.
1967 barbie woke upĀ
1967 totally looks self aware. Ā Like sheās just discovered that sheās actually a doll.
Every time this post rolls by on my dash the commentary just gets better and better. I love it.Ā
When I was in middle school, I did a social Studies project on the history of Barbie and the social impact she had on girls and women. I read a book called Forever Barbie, and I realize looking back that it was probably a little too over a 12-year-oldās head, but I remember it being one of the most interesting books I read for research. It talked about Barbieās origin as being inspired by a lewd joke doll manufactured in Germany (I think) whose sole purpose was for drunk men to lift up her skirt and peek at her plastic parts. It talked about how the development for Ken was stymied because they couldnāt give him a package, but had to put something there so his clothes would lay right ā leading to his painted on BVDsā¦and a slew of phallic props, including a baseball bat, a fishing pole, and his first car ā a Hot Rod, naturally.Ā
It also talked about how the shift from side-eye Barbie to looking-at-you Barbie was significant. Averted eye contact meant she was passive: conceived as a fashion doll, she was mostly supposed to be a prop. If you notice the shift of her gaze from the side to straight-on comes in the 1970s, which given the political and social climate of womenās rights at the time, is no mere coincidence. Sure there was still a fixation on fashion and the unrealistic proportions endured, but then Barbie also went to space and became president, so thereās that, too.Ā
I also notice she didnāt really start smiling untli 1976 and for the most part they havenāt gone back. Ā Iām not sure what it means, but itās interesting.
so, okay. as a doll person I have some Thoughts about the comment two reblogs up
Barbie was inspired by Bild Lilli, a doll made in Germany in the 1950s. Lilli started as a cartoon in the Bild magazine, and the character was a street-smart, gold-digging āgood time girlā. the doll was initially sold in tobacco shops for men to give to their girlfriends as a joke, or hang from their carsā rear-view mirrors
however, there were noĀ āplastic partsā to gawk at apart from stylized boobs- Lilli was not anatomically correct, despite persistent urban legends that she had nipples. (source: have seen a nude, all-original Bild Lilli doll)
Lilli also had some crossover appeal as a childrenās toy, incredible as it may seem. you could buy separate outfits for her- something I doubt the playboy market had much use for -and Ruth Handler (the creator of Barbie) bought a Lilli doll for her daughter while traveling in Austria. so while she kind of was a gag gift for adult menā¦she also kind of wasnāt
I also feel like people put too much emphasis on the side-glancing thing. like, yeah, Barbie had a shift from looking sideways to looking straight ahead. but MOST fashion dolls in the immediately prior era had made eye contact with their admirers
(Madame AlexanderĀ āCissyā doll, c. 1955-60.)
(UneedaĀ āDollikin,ā c. 1958.)
(IdealĀ āMiss Revlon,ā c. 1956)
Iād almost argue Barbie was breaking the mold by looking to the side- something previously seen more often in mischievous-looking novelty child dolls -and restoring the earlier norm when she switched to looking forward. And therefore, Iām not sure I see it as a shift from Bad Old Passive Dolls⢠to a New Active Empowered Doll⢠Or vice versa, I should add. I just donāt think itās that deep, personally
ā¦also 2001-2011 is the Barbie Married Daddy And Sheās Shipping You Off To Boarding School era
barbie get so much flack for her weird proportions and hereās the truth: she and many other dolls are shaped like that because the donāt make magic ultra thin fabric for doll clothes. you use fabric that you use for people clothes, so proportionally, itās much thicker when compared to barbie, so her body shape loses shape pretty quickly under layers of clothing.Ā
this is especially noticeable around the neck! most fashion dolls have really long necks for this reason.Ā
there are certainly aspects to her design that are about idealized form, but i think thereās so many other interesting choices behind her designed that dont get talked about enough because weāer too busy talking about female beauty standards.Ā
