Kacey Ann Nichols is twenty-three and the preacher’s daughter of Willow Creek. She grew up learning how to be good, how to be calm, how not to make trouble and while some may find it boring, Kacey loves her small-town life. She is a teacher at the local elementary school, where just two years ago she and her students survived a school shooting She remembers the sound more than anything and the weight of small hands clinging to her, trusting her to know what to do. Now she smiles for her brave students, sings in the choir, rides horses before dawn until her legs ache. At night, she counts breaths, calories, memories. Control is the only thing that still listens to her.
