OKAY so this has been bothering me for forever, and I know the fanbase is dwindling, but I’m still gonna say a thing anyway:
ROBERT GOREN WOULD NEVER HAVE BIOLOGICAL KIDS.
There’s a handful of fics in which this happens, he and Eames get married and have adorable genius babies. NO. Not happening. Goren would not have biological children.
Goren’s mother was schizophrenic. Schizophrenia is hereditary. Which means that there is a very real chance that any biological child Goren had could have schizophrenia. Goren would NEVER take that chance. So he would NEVER have a biological child. He wouldn’t risk doing that to a person, passing on that mental illness to a person.
So any fic in which Goren and Eames have biological children is OOC. It’s inconsistent with Goren’s character. Personally, I don’t think Goren and Eames don’t have any particular burning desire to have children. But, if they did have kids, they would absolutely not be biological.
Just wanted to put this out there, because it’s bothered me every time I’ve seen it, and I knew it would continue to bother me until I said something.
Okay chill out. From what I’ve read, even having a PARENT with schizophrenia increases your odds of developing it by ~6%. Having a grandparent, in the case of any children Bobby has would up the chances anywhere from 2-6%. NOW, also from what I’ve read, living in an urban area increases it by 2%, being born in the winter or spring can increase the odds as well.
Basically the chances are very low. Bobby has yet to exhibit symptoms, which means any children he had would have a low chance of becoming schizophrenic. It’s not like cystic fibrosis or Huntington’s or any other of the autosomal dominant diseases where the chances are 50/50 if a parent exhibits symptoms. And Bobby is a smart guy. He would know all of this, having likely researched it. Schizophrenia has a tenuous relationship with heredity and those with it in their family shouldn’t feel as though the risk of reproducing overweighs the reward.
My mother is bipolar. I have ADHD. Mental illness runs in my mother’s side of my family and alcoholism on my father’s. I will still have children naturally. I’ve never thought the opposite. Seems rather like eugenics. Sry. Rant over.
Is it too late to chime in on this? Um… Yeah, coldgreydawn is right about this. The possibility of having a child with schizophrenia is very low. And Bobby TOLD Nicole not to count him out when it came to having kids, so not OOC. Just saying. P.S. Cystic fibrosis isn’t 50/50. If mom & dad are both carriers of the recessive gene then it’s ¼ chance the child will have CF… but if only one parent carries the recessive gene but the other does not, none of their children will have CF (just possible carriers)
