Susie and Ralsei: learning that you matter (part 2)
By playing the first chapter of deltarune only, one might think that Susie is the one who has more to learn. After all, she starts off threatening to kill Kris, while Ralsei starts off trying to make friends and save the world.
But as the story progresses, we see that Ralsei has more things that hinder his growth as a person.
Like, the fact that he doesn't feel like he deserves to even be a person.
Ralsei doesn't only think that he doesn't deserve to have belongings, but that he doesn't even deserve to have feelings.
He wants to be friends, but his definition of friendship is to be used up
Of course, in both cases Susie in her typical defiant fashion (though now infused with kindness), rejects his world view.
And this metaphorical slap of logic is exactly what Ralsei needs to hear. The no hesitation "of course you matter, dumbass!" only Susie can give him.
And this ended up making Ralsei wish for more than just regarding person-hood, but regarding friendship as well.
Both times he calls it 'selfish', despite only wishing for he could be there for Susie more, and if not that, make sure that there's someone else who can do it for him.
Because Ralsei sees himself as no more than a chair, and for a chair to wish it could be more than a chair, even for the sake of helping its owners in ways other than its initial purpose, is unthinkable.
The mere act of wanting something that isn't related to his purpose is selfish in his eyes.
But Susie is so kind and so passionately caring, that she encourages Ralsei to be more 'selfish'. She even lets him have the entire cake he baked for Kris and her when she found out that he never had cake before.
And one of the things we know about Susie, is that she WILL eat anything vaguely edible she can get her hands of (sometimes even if it's not edible).
This isn't even the first time she did something like this. She let Lancer have the dark candy in chapter 1 when she heard that he never had one before, right after she complained about how hungry she was.
It's a popular theory along the fandom that Susie doesn't get enough food at her home, and yet when she sees someone she feels like needs it more than her, she's willing to give up food for them.
Ralsei thinks of himself as an object, but Susie looks at her and sees a person, just like her.
Because she herself knows what is it like to not get treated like a person.
Before going to the dark world, Susie felt like she didn't matter.
So now that she sees Ralsei feeling the same thing, she can tell him what he and the other people she met helped her understand.
"Hey, you matter. For real. And screw anyone who says otherwise."
