The first creak of the stairs. The first doubt. They were both coming down, he hadn't seen them yet, but he already knew the expression on his father's face. He didn't want to be here at all, he didn't want to hear it, he didn't want to see him in the robes of a school whose customs he had no idea about. But my mother thought it was a good idea.

Honestly, their conversation didn't go as bad as he thought. He even skipped commenting at the sight of a rat. They quarreled only later, when all the expenses were added up. He didn't interfere because what was he supposed to say? It was actually a bit absurd, but… It was impossible to patch up the holes left by potions. It wasn't just any hole, and he…

He really liked experimenting with them.

Maybe he should actually take better care of his things?

If you think about it, in his entire life, Tobias Snape had only seen his son in his school uniform a handful of times. Those few minutes when he and his mother returned from shopping, and she talked him into showing up, were the longest of them.

He was sitting alone under a tall tree at the edge of the castle courtyard, where autumn was blooming in all its majesty. The surrounding leaves had transformed into a real palace of shades of orange, red, and gold. It was, however, a series of colors muffled by a delicate mist falling around. October was doing its dance, the wind winding around the branches and gently whispering comforting sighs to him. “Calm down, Severus, it wasn't all that bad,” his only friend in such situations – his imagination – tried to suggest anything to stop the tide of tears streaming down his flushed cheeks.

Despite his strong stubbornness, Severus couldn't stop. He's stuck here again for a few hours, on the cold ground, where he probably shouldn't be sitting in this weather. And cried. And cried. And cried. And Severus didn't cry beautifully. He wasn't one of those people who stared into space and thought about their pain. Severus was sobbing, Severus was shaking, grunting, blowing his nose every now and then, he was as loud as he could possibly be, although everything inside him was screaming for him to be quiet. Because he really wanted to go back to the castle. He wanted to sneak up to the Slytherin dormitory and at least listen to what was being talked about in the common room, but the idea of running into James Potter again terrified him. Severus knew full well that he would have to walk past the Quidditch playing field, if he wanted to do so.
