The actor shifted on his heels in slight discomfort under the others annoyed stare, wouldnât be the first time he was met with that ice cold personality some deemed so charming. He didnt get it, guy was a bit of an asshole; then again guess most would say he wasnât any better than nines. Fuck their first meet, felt like the guy basically wrote him off as some unknown actor and there for inevitable to fuck this project up.
Fucking A listers.
Gavin scoffed at the other, rolling his eyes. âOnly by a half hour, what can I say, first day jitters not like it will be a reoccurring thing.â
He wasnât use to all this scheduling bullshit. There were loose schedules he had to follow with old directors he had to work for, butout day it felt like film school revisited, just a couple of dumbasses having fun with a camera. This felt like a real job compared to what he had been doing.
âDont get you panties in a bunch, not gonna ruin your precious little movie, if you remember my reputation is up in the air here, besides they cast me for a reason.â
Gavin stuffed the folded up bits of script back into his jacket pocket, hopefully deep enough that it wouldnât fall back out during the scene.
âLetâs just get to shoot huh? Ready for another smoke break already.â
Nines couldnât help but curl his lip in disgust at Gavinâs words. It was as though the work meant nothing to him, and all he cared about was the next time heâd get a dose of nicotine.Â
Ugh... Nines hated the smell of smoke. And now he was forced to feign interest and fawn over someone who would reek of it once the cameras were rolling.Â
He could do it. But that didnât mean heâd be pleased about it.Â
"You do realize if everything goes as perfectly as possible, weâll still be needed onset for at least a few hours,â he pointed out coolly. âAnd things very rarely ever go perfectly. I do hope youâre off book; itâll save you time spent away from your precious cigarettes.â

Smoke bellowed passed parted lips, tired eyes watching the strands of cigarette smoke dance up in the air before disappearing into the haze of the rising sun. If there was one thing he hated, it was early call times, working in amateur film he got use to not having to come in till noon time, and even then most of the directors he worked for wouldn't bother calling him in if he didn't have more than one scene to film. Guess that's what makes these guys the professionals. Still, they were dicks about it, and that lead of theirs, he sure had a stick up his ass.
Gavin huffed to himself flicking his cigarette out across the parking lot; ripping off the makeup towels still stuffed into the collar of his shirt as he turned back towards the staging area.
"Good of you to finally join us Reed, you got done with make up a half hour ago, where were you for blocking?" The director grumbled seeing the second walk through the stage doors.
"Yeah, sorry about that, needed a cigarette to calm the nerves before screen time.." He muttered, forcing himself to keep from touching his face and ruining the light layer of makeup the FX lady had spent time on.
"Keep forgetting how serious you guys are." He added, clearing his throat as he stepped around the other to head into the set, standing at what he assumed to be his mark before fiddling in his pocket to grab the small pages of script to reread over them. His eyes drifted up from the words on the page to see his supposed love interest staring at him.
"What, shit is this not my mark?"
Nines had arrived at the set at 7 AM. It wasn't the time he was told to arrive - he was half an hour early - but it meant he was able to set up things in his trailer for a while before he was needed for everything else.
This film... it was important to him. Not for any emotional reasons or for money, no. He needed this for his career. Most of his work was on the stage, acting out timeless classics - he'd only been able to nab a few film jobs. He was difficult to work with, he knew. But he was only pushy when it came to the process itself; he had studied film and stage almost as much as the directors. He wanted his creations to be incredible in every aspect, and only took jobs that could be.
This film was not only beautiful and well written, but everyone here seemed to have a good understanding and appreciation of his work style. They were accommodating and respectful, and Nines was pleased.
Except for this... actor that they chose for his costar. Gavin Reed. A scarred, nicotine addict - one Nines had never even heard of. Some sort of lesser film star, and the director assured him that while Gavin was lacking in experience in this sort of thing, he was a great talent and an invaluable member of the cast.
Nines had yet to see that for himself.
"You're late," he responded flatly. "We were forced to wait for you."

âWouldnât be hard. The church already uses you as a puppet.â She didnât laugh in a cruel way, but more to indicate she didnât know why they are all so dumb.Â
âHave you noticed any change in your hunger? Sleep?â She doubted demonic possession. Even faced with the horrors she did. She was more convinced it could be a parasite and she wasnât even that set on that explaination.
He pursed his lips, but didnât comment on her church assumption. He didnât exactly work for the church - he wasnât a crusader - and he definitely wouldnât go as far as to say he was a puppet.Â
âIâve noticed I eat considerably less when stressed, which also happens to typically be when these incidents occur.â

âNeither,â he said evenly. âYou felt it necessary to voice your opinion, as though it was relevant to the conversation or my observation. Yet, you are not human and have no facial recognition programming capable of detecting physical attractiveness or any experience therein. Thus, you have no room to speak. In simpler terms you may better understand, I have no reason to care what your opinion is.â
âSays the one exploding at me and belittling me for my opinion. You donât need to be some elitist high-end robot to see beauty and art in stuff. â
âIf I didnât know any better. I would think you were human. Being so ready to tear something down you donât like. â
He blinked innocently. "I have done no such thing. Merely stated that I have no reason to value your input, and therefore do not. Is saying such things truly tearing you down? I'd expect such fragility from a human, not from you."

âAre you seriously upset I have a different opinion or are you such a masochist you want competition?â

âI assure you, Gavin is still in peak physical condition and is conventionally attractive by most standards. And no offense is intended towards Lieutenant Anderson, but Iâm afraid in his old age he simply canât compare.â
âThey both look like crochety old men to me.â
Nines' eyes narrowed. "Enlighten me as to why I should take your opinion into consideration?"
"I assure you, Gavin is still in peak physical condition and is conventionally attractive by most standards. And no offense is intended towards Lieutenant Anderson, but Iâm afraid in his old age he simply canât compare.â
darkestscalpelâ:
âI know that those who seek it regularly enjoy the pain and enjoy the sin leading up to it. But who am I but one weirdo in a bird mask. I donât understand the ways of god.â She shrugged. She had parroted words people had told her over the years. âLeaches for sins sounds just as viable in my eyes.â
She kicked a loose stone. âSoooo. Since you like with it. Do you have any theories?â
He did indeed have theories, but he hesitated. Truthfully, he worried he might be possessed, much like the abominations. If he was, though... surely the church would eventually come after him and kill him or chain him.Â
But if he was, wouldnât his physical appearance morph to show this change? His lapses in control never once changed him physically.Â
âI worry my travels in the dark may be affecting me. That it... takes hold of my mind and forces me to become a puppet.â

âWhatâs the difference?â She shrugged.Â
âAlright lets go cut you open.â She stated wondering off to the direction of her inn room. âMentally or physically. Iâm not picky but itâs your body so you really should get a say how.â
He wrinkled his nose beneath his helmet, but followed along with her. âIâve already tried self flagellation. I didnât understand the logic behind it, and I donât believe it did anything for my affliction.â
darkestscalpelâ:
She waved her pointer fingers back and forwards to wards him. âMost people are too embarrassed to admit somethings wrong.â It wouldnât be the first time she had someone bleed out in front of her because they wouldnât admit they were dumb enough to get stabbed.Â
âYou sure? Iâve seen you guys fight. That seems very traumatic to me.â
âI am not embarrassed that something is wrong,â he disagreed. âI am ashamed. And this shame is the reason I seek out a cure. And it may seem traumatic to you; I have experienced such things for a long time.â
darkestscalpelâ:
She stepped into his space. âInteresting. This you or a âfriendâ or an actual friend?â
âIâm not head surgeon.â She didnât have the screw helmet for that. âBut maybe you are blacking out because there is no desire to remember. A lot of people black out due to trauma or alcohol.â
He glared down at her, though it was barely recognizable through the filter of his helmet. "I never said friend. I said hypothetically. And I don't... black out, exactly. It isn't due to trauma."
"Doctor, I have a hypothetical question for you... would you be able to develop a treatment for someone with unusual defects that cannot be removed by the sanitarium?"
"Define defect," she spun her knife around her fingers. "We can drown your demons, electrocute them, sedate the hell out of them."
She put her hands out to the side. "But I'm far more interest in the physical stuff. Like surgery or lobotomy."
âIf someone were to have periodic lapses in memory and control. Particularly in battle.â
an-unlikely-duoâ:
Gavin wouldnât feel pressured at all, he would just deflect and say it was Ninesâ decision if he wanted to get a stomach or not. However he would hint that he would feel less awkward eating around Nines if he actually could eat something too.
âHm⌠have we watched Hot Fuzz together yet?â Gavin asked and stroked his chin, a cheeky grin on his lips. He just made everyone watch this movie. If you had a movie night with Gavin and he was to chose the movie, you could bet your left hand that it would be that one.
âWe can discuss this on our way to the precinct, letâs get going, that fucking report wonât write itself.â he grumbled. Gavin just hated reports.
âI have not watched it, no,â Nines responded. Which was a bit of a wonder, considering how fond Gavin was of the film. At the name, many pages popped up in his HUD, but he dismissed them. He didnât wish to spoil it for himself, not if he could watch it with Gavin instead.Â
âOf course,â he agreed. He would just leave out the fact that heâd practically written the entirety of the report already, and all that was needed was Gavinâs written agreement that everything was true.Â

âYou know, you look sooooo much better with that little smile on your face!â Gavin pointed out when he caught a glimpse at Nines face. âI mean, you already have a fucking pretty face but with a smile.. you absolutely stop traffic⌠or my heart.. or however the saying goes.â he slured and slightly pulled away from the android, now that he didnât have to bear his own weight anymore, he absolutely let Nines handle keeping him up right.Â
Then he squinted at his partner âIâll hold ya to that, tin-canâ he said and he would. Gavin was good at remembering stuff people told him when he was drunk, thatâs why friends became careful when they went out drinking with him. That bastard remembered everything.
The car pulled up and they could enter, finally sitting again! Gavin was annoyed at how the world was spinning.
Nines felt the urge to... well, not laugh. He didnât often laugh. But he was amused, and fond. Gavin was unusually sweet while drunk.Â
âIâll keep that in mind, detective. You neednât worry, Iâve recorded this entire conversation so we may discuss it in detail later,â he added wryly. That wasnât fully true; he wouldnât be playing it back just to embarrass Gavin later, but he would be discussing it.Â
He slid into the car beside Gavin, being sure he fastened his seatbelt. âInform me if you need us to pull over.â
