i really really really really really like hadestown's repeated use of "eurydice was a hungry girl" because at first pass you might think oh, she's scrappy and street smart and her ambition is going to be the foil to orpheus's idealist romanticism. but nope! no she is literally hungry. she is starving. that is her motivator and everybody knows it. she loves, oh she does, but she can't be fucking blamed for fulfilling her physical needs first.

lowkey have only seen one or two slimes of hadestown before watching the proshot so i’m not sure this was a new change, but can we talk about orpheus turning to look at persephone at the end of is it true?? instead of hades??? i was thinking they might’ve changed this as a result of patrick page’s limited mobility, but either way, WOW is it amazing storytelling-wise.
before, i always thought of that moment as a stick-it-to-the-man confrontation, where orpheus finally stands up to hades, the big bad boss who’s been silencing the workers of hadestown all this time, but now!! now it becomes an entreaty to persephone, their patroness who promised to provide for them and yet returns to hades every year and still can’t bring herself to truly, significantly interfere with how hadestown is run. despite her work as the lady of the underground, she is still one of Them, one of the Few with the power to say what is true.
but when confronted by orpheus, who asks her if it’s true what they say, persephone finally musters the strength to stop trying to forget and run away and ask hades, “how long?”
