Open starter Location: Covent Garden
|| Trigger Warning: alcohol consumption ||
Edgar was mid-laugh when the situation turned - though whether it had turned badly or simply become more entertaining was, in his mind, still up for debate. He'd somehow found his way onto the edge of a fountain in the square of Covent Garden, one boot braced against the stone lip while the other hovered far too close to slipping. His coat hung open, cravat half-loosened, hair a touch unruly in a way that suggested the night had been far longer than intended. A small crowd had gathered at a cautious distance.
"I'm perfectly steady," he insisted to no one in particular, though his balance suggested otherwise. He lifted his glass as if to prove a point, only managing to spill a portion of it over his hand instead. Edgar blinked at it, then laughed again, entirely unbothered. "See? Not a drop-" His foot slipped slightly. He caught himself, barely, grin widening as though that had only improved things. "- well, nearly."
Only then did his gaze flick outward, landing on someone just close enough to intervene. Recognition - or something like it - lit his expression, bright and easy. "Ah," he said, as if they'd arrived exactly when expected. "There you are." He tipped his head, still precariously balanced, entirely untroubled by it. "Tell me," he added, voice warm with amusement, "are you here to save me, or simply witness the ending?"
In her work Raina was no stranger to wayward drunken men. Usually though it was at least someone from her own household that she was to manage. Well, manage in secret. She adored Marie far too much to broadcast whenever the Winchester heir got himself into trouble or needed to be brought back to the house.
"Do you need saving sir? For truly if you need it I will assist but I do not fully understand how you've gotten yourself into this situation."
closed starter for Elizabeth - @peopleotheton // Barnett House
There were many things to be said for a newly engaged couple to elope so suddenly, and whatever the reasoning behind it, the princess only wished the best for her friend even if it was at the cost of her being her lady. Elizabeth now had more important duties than attending to a princess, she had to run her entire household, to be the example for her sisters while ensuring they all end up with suitable matches but even so, Sophia already missed her friend. The Barnett house was busy, in full preparation for the upcoming ball and it was all anyone could talk about. Some were cruel with their words and claiming how suddenly Elizabethβs fortunes had changed while most were happy for her. She had married someone who could respect her while ensuring a future for her sisters, a sacrifice indeed and one Sophia knew she would not make herself. βI hope you forgive the intrusion, I did not have a chance to see you before you departed and I simply had to do something to mark the occasion, but I did not think you would host such a grand ball.β Sophiaβs little present looked feeble when amongst the new splendour of the Drake fortune and Barnett legacy combined and there was something so saddening of it. Inside the gifts was a simple bone-china tea set, a favorite of Sophiaβs she had remade should a friend marry, the princess did not expect it to be so sudden or for her to be absent from the occasion. βThis is your first ball, Lady Drake, I am on hand should you require any assistance and of course I am here to gladly confirm my attendance. I even have my dress and jewels all picked out so I intend for it to be a remarkable night.β
"Your majesty you're here." Elizabeth was stunned to see the Princess but thrilled. One of her major concerns had been that eloping would stop Sophia from allowing the friendship that they had started building. She crossed the entry way, her arms open to give the option of a hug should Sophia feel comfortable.
"It is no intrusion at all, I am beyond thrilled to see you. Please come, we can sit and I can call for tea. I know I have a lot to explain."
"Fine," Kaira huffs under her breath, "you're not stubborn at all here." She thought the woman might not actually have been stubborn and that it was her own mood that saw that when it wasn't there or her own judgement not being fair. She did have a fiery temper that was quick to see the worst even though she'd tried to change that.
A lost child softened her instantly and she looks around, hoping to see some sign of him. "I haven't seen any children this way but of course I'll help you. Does he have a favourite place to go when he's here?"
Regina did her best to give a sheepish smile of apology. Verbal apologies weren't really her thing but given how kind the woman was being she felt the need to do something. The fact she hadn't seen Johann concerned her further and she started looking around once more.
"He likes to watch the birds, there's some nests nearby I think."
Frederic is watching her closely. " you- ruin my paper, and you don't want to pay for the mistake?" He hissed. He looked like a bristling cat- He leans closer to her. " Ah, I suppose that is trueβ¦it has changed for youβ¦.but people won't forget."
"that's good, isn't it? Someone went through with itβ¦.He likely saved your family, hadn't he?" He scoffed. "I don't know why he did it." He wonders why the man would marry into Barnettsβ¦what does he gain, he wonders. He tilted his head to the side. " Am I meant to marry when I only have the half-truth? You know, marriages are meant for. I wonder why you married...? " He pointed out. He repeated back what his brother said to him so many times. Surely those words would get back to Mary. It'd be good. Make her hate him. "Your man knew beforehand. I was not aware."
"It is paper, sir, and as you seem to delight in saying I know you can afford plenty. It is just such a shame that you seem unable to recognise that there is more to life than monetary aspects." She was, at least outwardly, unaffected by his leaning in, even though she wanted to step back. Instead she just raised her eyebrows, a rushed attempt at nonchalance and being unimpressed.
"He asked, had you asked we'd have told you all. But instead you reacted, well I'm sure I don't need to remind what you did." She wouldn't do Mary that disservice, explaining the heartbreak in such a public place.

Arthur took a heavy breath. He knew Regina meant well, but he needed to do something about what was happening, what had happened. Something that was beyond his control apparently. "You're safe," he said, watching her. "Both are safe," he reassured her. "What did my mother say to you?"
Regina didn't bother hiding her relief at knowing both her closest friend and their son was alright. She hadn't hid her affection for them. Most would know openly that she saw Alisa as her sister. They had grown up together, even the distance they had now was difficult for her to deal with. She gave a small sigh as she sat down.
"Everything she said was justified. Someone in my position shouldn't have hid a child. It's better I go," Relationships with parents would always have their difficulties and Regina didn't feel too comfortable butting into the relationship between the King and the Dowager, not when she was already in hot water with the latter.
He had found her. She was in front of him.
As much as he hated the title and status lifting her beyond his reach, he hadnβt ever put much thought to what might happen between them if scandal ever brought her low. She had always been nigh unimpeachable in his eyes. Everything between them, all the hurt and the pain, and the rash decisions; they sat heavy on his heart and in his mind.
Even now it was hardly her fault Johann was a bastard. He ought to have married her when he had the chance. He ought not to have waited. Waiting had made a mess out of everything, out of them both.
βRegina.β What was he doing here? All that frantic looking and now he had no idea what to say. βLady Messer. I was looking for you. Iβ this place. Is it suiting? Are youβ¦ is it safe here? For both of you.β
Regina didn't know what else to say to him. She truly didn't know how he was going to react about the reveal of Jann's parentage. Surely he'd have worked it out at the very least. He had never been a foolish man and she hoped that, whatever else he now though of her, he knew she'd been loyal.
His words elicited a bitter scoff though and she looked away, turning her attention to the entrance hallway before back to him.
"In this situation yes. It is safe enough. It has to be... Would you like to come in? I'd rather have this conversation in private."
It was not proper for a princess to get so much joy from reading anotherβs secret being exposed, but it was not just the secret that was the best part. Sophia had long since suspected that there was something more to Johann and Regina and as always with her gut instinct, she was right. Sophiaβs mother was the first to throw her weight around, wanting Regina and the bastard out of their home but the decision was Alisaβs and, for some reason, she wanted Regina around. βI did not think it was appropriate for a princess to be conversing with someone who has an illegitimate child, now flaunting it without shame. You are truly lucky my mother is no longer the reigning queen, you would both be out on the street otherwise.β Of course, when men had children outside of marriage they were not made to be such a big deal, and as unfair as it was, it was a bigger thing when a woman did so, especially when they were linked to the royal family. Regina was many things, but stupid was never something Sophia had associated her with until now. To keep a child such as Johann so close only meant she was inviting the secrets and scandal to her familyβs door. βDo you truly have no shame for the scandal you have brought upon my family?β
"There's a reason I said speak down to me, not just speak. I'm well aware of how you'll be feeling about this matter." Regina had to bite back a scoff at the Princess. Although she'd moved out of the royal housing she was still grateful to have her job with Alisa, even if it was on a tightrope at the moment. "Gosh you sound like your mother, is it not exhausting to stay on that high horse all the time."
At the mention of shame she looked away from Johann and stood up to properly face Sophia. "I have lost the only home I've known in England. I've lost my friendship with the Queen. She may defend me for now but I am not a fool no matter what you may think. I know that this will change us in a way we cannot recover nor imagine. But him? I have fought his whole life to do what is best for him and to keep him close. I will not be ashamed of him, or of the love he came from. Because that's what it was, love. I can't expect you to understand what that feels like, not with that cold heart of yours. But I truly hope you one day experience it... If for no other reason than you can look back at this judgement you give me and realise how there was never a choice for me. Your family? They are not mine. He is mine. Johann is my priority."
@namenotyourown || Elizabeth & Peter
"Do you think they'll come? To the ball I mean? I can only hope so it needs to be perfect. I know many were not amused by our elopement even though we had my father's permission." Elizabeth had been quiet before the thoughts finally verbalised and she gave a short sigh once they escaped. "... Have you spoken to Princess Sophia recently? I fear she's been avoiding me. I knew I should have invited her to the ceremony."
@mcstardently Arthur & Regina
"You didn't need to come and see me your majesty," Regina leant over the small table that was in her new home, placing a cup of tea beside him before she took her seat. The King arriving at her door had certainly been a shock, she was close to Alisa and she and Arthur had been friendly enough but she hadn't expected this.
"Is everything alright? Nothing's wrong with Alisa or Solomon is it?"

@tenderdeceit || Thomas & Regina
"Mr Dencourt?" Now there was a face Regina hadn't seen in a while. Although they hadn't interacted too often in court she certainly knew him and she had been as surprised as many when he had disappeared. "I didn't realise you were back in London, how are you?"
@prinxesssophia || Sophia & Regina Location: St James Park
If there was one person that Regina did not want to see since the news about Johann broke it was Sophia. She had deliberately tried to plan her days in a way that would avoid the Princess. But her luck could only run on for so long.
She'd had a planned picnic for Johann and whilst he was quite happy to be running around and having his favourite snacks she was getting more and more irritated by the eyes she could feel watching her.
"Are you going to come over and speak down to me or are you going to simply glare?"
@dreamspenned || Raina & Up to you! Location: Hyde Park
Hyde Park was so beautiful. Raina loved the chance to walk around on her free afternoons not to mention that when the weather was perfect like this it meant she could almost always be guaranteed to see someone else and have some new company.
Sure enough she was lucky enough to see someone also on their own shortly after she started her walk. Her confidence was getting better and she smiled as she walked over to them.
"Would you like some company? It's a beautiful day but I always think that walks are better with someone to come with you."
@nverholdme || Raina & Marie Location: Marie's room
"Marie we have an invitation," Raina was beaming as she entered Marie's quarters. Her own invitation was opened and in her own hand before she passed the still unopened one to her lady.
"It seems very interesting to me."
@wonderxrings || Regina & Oskar
Regina was barely settled into her new home. Johann was luckily mostly inaffected, seeing it instead as an adventure or holiday. Regina would take that as long as she could. Still she wasn't settled and someone knocking at the door only made her on edge.
Checking that Johann was still napping she made her way to the door opening it and stepping outside before looking to see who was there.
"...Oskar? What are you doing here?"

@untamedlace || Charlotte & Regina Location: The royal court
Coming back to the court felt strange. Whilst Alisa had insisted that Regina should stay on as her attendant Regina had still had to leave and she felt awful for putting her friend in that situation either way. She'd returned alone to the Court in order to try and collect some of her last belongings.
She was so caught up with her thoughts and mental list of what she needed to collect that she wasn't paying attention to where she was going and walked straight into someone.
"Oh my goodness I'm so sorry are you alright?"
@shadesofmoongate || Raina & Gustav Location: Near the Winchester Home
Raina prided herself on knowing members of the Ton, it was easy to slip in the background when you were a staff member. So she knew some of the main players, at the very least she knew royals even from other countries. So she was interested to see the Prince of Sweden near the Winchester home.
"Sir? Is everything alright? You look a little lost if you don't mind me saying."
