âThis doesnât feel right!â
Your friend kept silent, applying the wine colored lipstick to your lips. You both had to look perfect, especially you, their bait.
âWhat if it doesnât work?â
âWhat will they do? Go to the police?â, she let out a crude laugh.
âKill us or gang rape usâŠâ
âGirl, what?â
âDo you really think we can pull a Hustlers on them? Like really?â
âDo you have a better plan? Is either that or we get kicked out of the country, is that what you want? Cause I donât wanna go back home! In fact I donât even have a home to go back to, and neither do you.â
You closed your mouth shut, pursing your lips in silent anger. That plan was bound to fail and it absolutely did. But before that, everything went down perfectly.
Later that night when the two brothers and their pink haired friend arrived, the tall one that had been eyeing you for a while was immediately drawn to you. His eyes wandered through your body, lingering on your lips, a novelty to him, used to seeing you in pale pinks or translucent gloss. He eyed you knowing it was all for him, the lipstick, the dark green backless silk dress, cascading around your body, clinging to your thighs. You did your best not to seem nervous, thinking only about how handsome he was and how much of a compliment it was to have a man like him eye you with such interest, with such desire.
It didnât take long until you were called to their private booth. Melina and you. They want both of you, said the manager. She clasped your hands as if to reassure you; or maybe to intimidate you into following the plan. Donât fuck this up, you could almost hear her saying.
You looked around before going up, the music was too loud and your body had a warm tingling caused by the couple shots you had earlier while trying to dissipate the anxiety. Upstairs it was more calm, there was an air of secrecy with all the heavy velvet curtains and muffled laughs. Your friend stepped in first, pulling you by the hand in a tight grip.
âHello boys!â, said she, like it was just a regular night with her favorite clients.
They answered, matching her excitement, and introduced themselves: Rin, Sanzu and Ran. No last names.
âWell, Iâm Melina and this isâŠâ
âY/Nâ, said Ran, âI knowâ, his lips molten in a sweet smile as he stood up to give you his hand, guiding you to take the seat at his side.
You simply followed, mesmerized by him, almost forgetting what you were there to do.
âI like your new dress. This fabric looks good on you, so does the colorâ, said Ran, in a low voice, causing you to feel that his words would be only for your ears and no one elseâs.
âThank youâ, you answered, pulling yourself together, remembering the role youâre supposed to play. âI like your suit, it has remarkable tailoringâ.
His smile stretched a bit more, satisfied.
âAre you into fashion?â, he asked, reclining on the couch while putting his arm behind you, causing your heart to skip a beat while the memory of your first day in Japan mixed itself with his scent, followed by a sharp pain in your chest. Luckily this job taught you how to hide your feelings and Ran didnât seem to notice the fleeting pain in your eyes.
âIn a wayâŠâ, you answered, unsure about the conversation, but deeply craving to tell him all about yourself.
âIn a way? Câmon! I wanna know everything about youâ, he turned on his seat, making you feel like there were only you two in the room. âDo you like fashion or not?â
âYesâ, you answered, lips moving before your mind could warn you off. He should be kept in the dark, but the way he seemed to be listening⊠It had been such a long time since someone listened to you.
âIs that why you came here, to Japan? To study fashion?â
Donât say anything, your mind screamed.
âYesâ
âHow long ago?â
âSix yearsâ, you answered again, almost in a trance.
âYouâve been here for six years and I only met you nowâŠâ, his words had a reproaching sad tone, probably a fake sadness, you thought.
âWell Iâve only worked here for threeâŠâ, you said apologetically, filled with the feeling of inadequacy trapped in your throat.
âAre you good at it?â, Ran took a sip of his drink, measuring you.
âAt being a hostess?â
âNot that, at fashion designingâŠâ, he laughed as if the idea of you being a good hostess was absurd.
âYou donât think Iâm a good hostess?â, you asked, trying to deflect the conversation.
âYouâre a terrible hostess. One of the worst Iâve ever encounteredâ
âHave you encountered many?â, you retorted, offended, âDo you have the habit of paying women to entertain you?â
âIs that what you are doing?â, his voice had a sharpness to it, a dangerous one. The tone was the same, but something was off, making you regret your carelessness. âCause if it is, I'd rather get what I want instead of sitting here spending thousands of yen just to look at your smile.â
Your body froze, it would be the perfect opportunity, but you had never done that. You were a hostess, they were barely allowed to touch you, let alone do more. Plenty of other girls did it. Some even became their clients' girlfriends or lovers. Would that be your case? Probably not, the other clients were businessmen, regular people. He was a criminal, a dangerous one.
Eyeing you like a hungry cat, Ran closed the space between you once more, taking a lock of your hair on his fingers.
âIâm not gonna pay⊠Thatâs not what I want you for.â
âI donât understandâ, you answered, choosing to be safe.
Ranâs smile returned to its warm ease of before, but you could hardly do the same, even if you still felt the magnetic pull compelling your body to obey his every command.
âHave dinner with me. Not here. At some fancy restaurant. You chooseâ.
