Was modeling the Batmobile cocoon and tried to see if I could improve some of the VFX shots for funsies. Low samples, but I dig it :)
I wouldn’t have done so much work on ‘89 Batman stuff except that there’s almost nothing out there, and what is tends to be, shall we say, questionable. Whether you love the movie or not, it’s a pop culture cornerstone and immensely influential, and deserves to have its designs accurately recreated.
The Batwing is no exception! This model isn’t a repro of any one Batwing from the film but a conglomeration of the full-size cockpit set and 1:4 scale hero model, with additional details taken from the 1:12 scale model to fill in the gaps (as the 1:4 model was only intended to be shot from certain angles and was consequently asymmetrical and devoid of many ventral details).
This model is intended to be printed out at 1:12 scale but detailed for extreme closeups, and is engineered as though it were a model kit, with undercuts accounted for and larger parts like the wings broken up along panel lines to fit standard tooling sizes. I left some boolean ops out of the render to speed things up, and yes, there’s a pair of fully detailed miniguns on it, too. The cockpit and wire cutters are the only things left undone (cockpit because of reference, cutters because I’m lazy) and the whole thing is about 95% done.
Rico’s “puzzle gun” from Judge Dredd (1995). This model was visible in a previous post, but I totally forgot to talk about it. The original prop was actually (at least) four different props edited together: A static closed model, a static unfolded model, a spring-loaded unfolding model, and a mechanized version with moving scanner light and drawer.
I started by modeling the unfolding version as it’s the most “iconic” (aka cool) version in the movie, and worked backwards to combine the details and functionality of the other versions. Open/closed is easy, all it needs is a locking mechanism, the problem is with the opening “drawer” version as the drawer itself and the badge inside both intersect with the other parts and it’s literally impossible for the object to exist as depicted. Which is annoying.
The fix (which I’m still tweaking) is to have the badge permanently affixed to the drawer and split it into separate parts across its details; the lower half of the badge is carried forward and stays inside the end of the gun as it’s extended! I honestly don’t have a clue how well this’ll work, and won’t know till I get it printed, but the idea’s pretty sound….
More Batman ‘89 stuff. Batman himself is a rare dive into a character instead of an object, but I guess the sculpted costume kinda diminished that a bit... the feet are just placeholders, please please please ignore those. The muscle forms need a few tweaks but they’re basically there. The belt isn’t done but, once it is, it’ll be the only part of the model I can re-use for a Batman Returns model. The gloves can be kinda re-used (the sequel suit gloves are mostly the same, sans forearm plate, but are reproductions and have a bunch of little differences) though everything else was redone from scratch and I’ll have to do the same.
The Batmobile is pretty self-explanatory; the official blueprints out there are based on pics rather than the build plans and are super warped and basically useless, but I found a decent scan of the orthographic views that were blown up to carve the polystyrene original! Most of the surface detail is missing but the basic forms were what I really needed and I’m confident in the accuracy of the body’s shape. Things like the side mechanics were found objects stuck on later so I’m leaving those till last (since they won’t affect the modeling process) and the rear trunk vents are placeholders till I’m comfortable with the curvature of the hatch.
I’m still working on a lot of the details, obviously, but I’m proud of the basic accuracy so far. When all is said and done, I’m hoping to get it printed as a stupidly big display piece :)

Started picking up some old projects, including these ‘89 Batman props that ended up not being used in the film. Up top, a time bomb, and below, a tracking device with spring-loaded antenna.
There’s very little reference images of these out there (maybe three pics of each) but there’s also a super-short video clip of these items being handled, which not only helped out with some of the angles and detail depth but will eventually provide the general size. Right now I’m just focused on detail, though.
Had to change a few details for practicality and symmetry and will be making one more change before printing, but April will have herself a Turtlecom in one of my upcoming vids!
That’s it. Those 8 photos are the only pics of this thing I’ve been able to find, besides screencaps, of course (where it’s delightfully out of focus :/)
Still, I’ve managed to figure out quite a bit, particularly regarding the mechanics, and I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to track down at least one of the found parts on here so I can get concrete measurements to work from since the fly fishing reels on top have been sufficiently modified (are were already a generic enough style) that a positive ID can’t be made with the reference I have on hand. If anyone has a pic I haven’t seen, please message me!
Another model I’ve been prepping for 3D printing: ‘89 Batman’s speargun!
It’s not perfectly accurate (I intentionally included a stunt version detail for flavor) and there are a couple of details I haven’t been able to find reference for, but I’m pretty sure it’s still one of the most accurate models out there :)
Needed to let my eyes reset after staring at the same handful of reference images, so I worked the basics of the speargun gauntlet… for which there are even fewer reference images :/

I was gifted a DIY 3D printer for Xmas and I’ve been desperate to use it but I’ll have to replace a part and get some filament first which… sucks. Yeah. Still, I’ve been tweaking some models of mine to get them print ready once it’s actually running so yay!
Modding the Batmobile! I’ve had the Mattel 1/12 ‘66 Batmobile sitting around for a while and have been improving it step by step. The first bit of business was moving the front axle opening upward to drop the car’s stance down to a more accurate look (the masking tape marks the uppermost point) and make it more aggressive. Next up was cutting the interior plug from the totally static beam emitter and attaching a metal pin so it can be manually raised, lowered, and spun! Not very exciting as of yet, but just wait till I’ve got the lights ready for you :)
Various cutouts for lighting. Both of the front lights have been chopped out and lenses/lightboxes fashioned. Going to make a screen for the dash radar, and am currently undecided on how to handle the exhaust… strictly lights, a backlit sculpted flame, a removable flame so I can switch between? Not a clue; I’m still going back and forth on cutting out the doors :/

After more than a year of having my Note, I finally installed an art program and decided to get into the Halloween spirit by drawing the one and only Sir Daniel Fortesque, which is obviously not done yet
It turns out that the hand holding the phone cramps up loooooong before the hand with the stylus does
Done enough that I’m just going to call this complete and move on with my life

Some recent acquisitions! Pardon the dusty shelf :)
Btw, you can see that I sculpted a chin and strap on the bottom of the Rocketeer helmet… it was just empty space before, but since I was already working on the hands and Secord portrait, I figured I’d add that in as well :)
The cut in my finger is saying “this was a terrible idea!” but the windows on this Bird of Prey are telling me “won’t we look beautiful when you install the lights?” and I have to say that the windows are winning
Yup, the windows won! This is going to be beautiful <3
