kosa update:
kosma (kids off social media act) has somehow passed committee without a vote. no mentions of that happening anywhere. unfortunately, that means that it's closer to passing now, which is obviously, very alarming.
as the last link suggests, the hearing will happen in the senate this thursday. so, we have to call them (senators) now, before they pass this.
WASHINGTON, D.C. â U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, will convene
Looks like Ted Cruz is pushing forward the "Kids Off Social Media Act". A hearing in the Senate Commerce Committee is scheduled for this Thu
apologies if i have gotten some information wrong. however, please note that while this isn't exactly kosa, this is still related, and is getting more attention, as well as more people advocating for this censorship bill. no matter, the goal is the same. start calling them about this, and inform others. thank you.

KOSMA hearing Thursday Jan 14!! call in now!
WASHINGTON, D.C. â U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, will convene
:"This is a hearing, not a markup, because lo and behold this bill passed out of the Senate committee without discussion and is already on the Senate floor đđ And apparently this happened last February. Trust me, I am just as shocked as you. I did not hear any of this happening and would have remembered, but yes. Gotta love our government đđ"
What this hearing is hoping to do is to kickstart the propaganda machine about these internet censorship bills up again in support of them. Since this bill is on the Senate floor, it is urgent that we call Senate leadership and tell them not to support a bill that will cause mass harm to children.

my observation
KOSMA uses a âreasonable knowledgeâ standardâonline services must act if there is a high likelihood that a user is below the age of 13.
My conclusion: This seems vague and ill defined and could encourage disastrous age verification systems that when tried in the UK led to hackers stealing a lot of personal information because it was all in one place. My conclusion: this could lead to false positives of people falsely identified by their past usage history as underage having their accounts deleted because they looked up an old cartoon for nostalgia purposes or similar.
---
"The American Psychological Association (APA) released social media guidelines, which, among other suggestions, argued that young teens and preteens benefit from using social media with significant guidance from their parents when they are young and then having more autonomy as they get older."
KOSMAâs school-based restrictions have drawn criticism, with opponents arguing that E-Rate funding restrictions could disproportionately harm low-income students who rely on school-provided internet access for homework, after-school activities, and communication. [

KOSA's going around under a slightly different name, so I made a resistbot petition and faxed my senators about it.
The petition reads:
KOSMA is a data breach waiting to happen. Last July, the UK passed their own online safety act, despite cybersecurity experts warning them that this would lead to identity theft. Only a few months later the messaging platform, Discord would experience a massive data breach. It had collected government ID photos in accordance with UK law. Now, those photos are vulnerable. If you vote in favor of KOSMA, then you are either stupid enough to not learn from past events, or you are malicious with citizens' online safety.
Of my senators, one has never replied to my emails and the other was previously in favor of KOSA, so I don't think I'll change their minds. But hopefully one of you can change your senator's minds.
Can you share a link to the petition for KOSMA so I can share it in a post? I can't seem to find the campaign on the resistbot site.. Also apologies for the reblog spam. I'll try to avoid doing it with other people's posts from now on.
Here it is. I discovered this morning that using the image as a link doesn't work on mobile (at least not when logged out, since I haven't used the tumblr app in years), so for future petitions I'll try to format the post differently.
And it's no big deal about the reblog spam. I was more concerned for your setup, and a little saddened by the post notes : petition signings ratio, than mad. But like, I'm not sure if you're in the US or not, so I understand if reblogging is more feasible than signing.

Itâs scary on the internet right now. All the censorship bills that congress and other countries are trying to/have passed. But I have an idea to combat them.
Minors Against Online âSafetyâ. I feel like messages against censorship âfor the childrenâ will be more effective coming from the children itâs claiming to protect.
Hereâs the plan: Find your stateâs senators and house representatives. Call them, email them, tell them every little way these bills are detrimental, to BOTH children and adults. Most importantly, do it CONSTANTLY. At least once every few days, IF NOT MORE. AND, tell your friends and classmates to do it too. Regardless of political orientation, I canât imagine any teen taking kindly to the idea of their internet access being limited or completely revoked.
The bills weâre targeting are: KOSA (requires age verification to access many websites), KOSMA (bans people under 13 from using social media) , the SCREEN act (blocks content seen as harmful to minors for ALL audiences), Block BEARD (supposedly protects against foreign piracy), and the Take It Down act(blocks content seen as sexually obscene to ALL audiences), which has already passed but is ridiculously unconstitutional, so maybe we can get the Supreme Court on that.
Some good points that you may want to bring up (if you can think of any others, put them in comments, please!)
- The SCREEN act could limit a teenâs access to Sex Ed, especially for the lgbtq+ community, who donât always get taught how to stay safe in schools.
- While this might cut down on kids access to negative content, it could also very easily cut down on access to positive content as well. (e.g. , a child becomes suicidal. While they might no longer have access to material encouraging them to commit, they will likely also lose access to material discouraging them as well)
- A lot of the big companies that would have to enforce these policies are subject to data breaches. What would happen if a predator got access to a list of users containing their ages?
- Block BEARD could lead to many non-profit sites being banned in the U.S. (such as AO3, a fanfiction website that has content tagging and filtering systems put in place, that would likely make it difficult for a child to encounter obscene content, if supervised properly by their guardians.)
- The president has specifically stated that he intends to to use the Take It Down Act to censor those who disagree with him. Not only is this a pretty direct violation of the First Amendment, the government has also put policies like this in place before, to undesirable effects (Alien and Sedition Act).
- Neurodivergent kids. Socializing in person can be quite hard for many ND children, but sites like Discord can be an outlet to help them find connection. KOSMA will ban kids under 13 from social media, which is not only somewhat useless in itself, seeing that most big social media sites either require this already or are specifically for children, but also doesnât account for the possibility of a child using their parentâs account.
- China. China is infamous in the western world for the unbelievable amount of censorship it puts on its citizens online activity, but not even China requires this kind of age verification.
- A childâs parents should be the one in charge of what they deem too inappropriate for their child, not the government. What if abrahamic religion was considered obscene? How would Christian and Jewish and Muslim parents educate their children on their beliefs?
The most important part of making this effective is to NEVER LET UP. Harass your representatives constantly if you have to. Do it until not only do they vote against these bills, but they become vocal opponents of them, and tell everyone you know to do the same. Share this on every social media you have. Do the same with YouTubeâs age verification, or Visa and Mastercardâs sudden control over game stores. And if you live in Canada or Australia or the UK? Do the same. We can stop this kind of oppression, but only if we fight tooth and nail against it. Please reblog to signal boost.

Chat Control and Kosa and all, could mean less opportunities for me to make friends, and I already have a tough time making and keeping them, but like, with how easy it is to lie and/or be anonymous (until Chat Control and Kosa and all), maybe I shouldn't have friends online (or at least I also dislike the fact that the person isn't physically there and can't come over, typically), but at least I HAVE a choice. At least I have OPTIONS, friends OFFLINE, and at least my preference may be the one that the government may not take away - and at least I haven't kept any internet friends! There is those who have no other option, or who have no friends offline, or who have friends online they wouldn't wanna lose in any way, or prefer friends online, so I do worry about them.

UPDATE ON KOSA:
Unfortunately, all of the privacy-killing legislation passed out of subcommittee. đĄđĄ This includes KOSA, the App Store Accountability Act, and several other age verification bills.
I am extremely furious about this. So so bad. What the hell.
The only good news is that KOSA passed on a party line vote, meaning they ARE listening to opposition. Same with COPPA, I believe.
But it is still not enough. These age verification bills are TERRIBLE. This is not a fight we can give up on or afford to lose. We must go 10x harder.
If you're angry about it, CALL UP THOSE MEMBERS. If you're scared, CALL UP THOSE MEMBERS. If you don't know what to do, CALL UP THOSE MEMBERS.
SPREAD THE WORD.
Thank you for everyone who participated in this weeks rounds of calls. I do believe it had an impact, considering that this is the first time KOSA had some opposition of this level. Still, let's go even harder.
BTW this means it heads to the full committee in the House now, which may or may not be next week. There's nothing scheduled, but who knows. The GOP has signalled they want to get this out the House before the end of the year back in Spring, but who knows. I will keep yo uall updated.

All-hands-on-deck
As I've mentioned before, December is an all-hands-on-deck month. On December 2nd the House Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade Subcommittee had a hearing to introduce a 19-bill package of Online Safety Bills. NOW, on Thursday, December 11th 2025, they've scheduled a markup for most of (not all) of those bills, including KOSA. We need to repeat what we did just a few days ago and continue to call, fax, and email members of the House Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade Subcommittee, House Leadership, and our representatives to oppose this bills.
Push back work. We've done this before and can do it again we just need energy and noise.
This markup is just another part of a long process and we need to be loud about our opposition every step of the way. Again, don't panic, this isn't necessarily a subcommittee vote (I'm not sure if they'd vote on the bills or continue to mark them up after Thursday), but this is another step in the process So, PLEASE CALL!

đ¨đ¨đ¨KOSA & other age verification bills being voted on in subcommittee TOMORROW 12/11
Long story short, there are about ~18 age verification/"child safety" laws being put into one big package in the House.
The House Energy and Commerce subcommittee that oversees these age verification bills are voting THIS THURSDAY aka tomorrow to pass these bills onto the full committee, and then the full House. We need to drive as much opposition as we can on these bills, specifically KOSA, the App Store Accountability Act, and honestly any age verification bill which many of these are.
This is how to do it and how you can fight back on age verification
1) Call the house representatives in the committee. Use a call script if you don't know what to say
You can do it two ways. You can either go to the subcommittee site and call each one here:Â https://energycommerce.house.gov/committees/subcommittee/Commerce (scroll down, click their names, phone number is under their picture)
or you can use this call script to connect to members here:Â www.badinternetbills.com
you can use this call script too:Â https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IyBUe6frFGF44rJQU3TahZ5zyG3tC7jai_hPneAKlnM/edit?tab=t.0
2) Spread the word! We need as much mass opposition as we can right now. So many stakeholders, policymakers, and politicians etc are looking at public opinion on these bills. We were able to stop them before because of the mass opposition, we need that again. Let everyone you know know. Spread the word!

Hey can everyone give a fuck about KOSA???
Like, go fucking look at the bill. Read it. Continuously call your senators and representatives. Protest. Email them. Are you pissed about the YouTube age verification thing???? Then you should be scared of it happening to the entire internet. It's not about protecting children. It's about surveillance and control. I feel like I'm screaming at a brick wall.
Please reblog this and any other post about KOSA that you see. No one is listening.
